Catch Me Outside

"Millie, I got another one!" Anne yelled back from the shore, enthusiastically waving her small catch. Anne threw the tiny fish back with a bit more force than necessary, cringing as it flew farther than fish were meant to travel by air. A look of exasperation from the adult nearest her on the bank reminded Anne that fishing was meant to be a quiet pastime. Waving Millie to come join her on the bank, Anne made a face of disgusted glee as she grabbed her next worm.

Anne knew mum might be less than pleased that Anne spent the day participating in a fishing tournament. Very unladylike and all that, but Anne wasn't bothered. Sometimes, her class worked in her favor. As long as she wasn't prissy like Violet's kind, Anne could do much of what she pleased. At least if she could pull it off without needing parental approval. That seemed to be getting more and more scarce. Turning her attention back to the competition at hand, Anne speared her worm and cast her line. "Millie," She called out, "You don't know what you're missing."

The day was pleasant enough, it was only the location that Millie found difficulty with. Nearby, the sound of splashing lures and grunts of effort as fish were stolen away from their natural habitats. She related quite sympathetically, stolen herself from the quiet serenity of her reading nooks to join her friend at the fishing competition by the parkside shore. Far enough from the comfort of her trees, Millie at least found a little in the book on her lap and the companionship of a friend.

Who seemed to be doing her best not to let her enjoy it.

"I'm doing fine from over here," she called back. The young witch distinctly recalled the last time she ventured onto the water, and had decided to take a healthy break from adventures that took her off the shore for a while. Even Anne's firm footing near the water left her glancing warily at its lapping surface, and she shook her head again. "Actually, I have a rather unique vantage point, it is quite thrilling in fact. So much that I might not even need my book at all."

With a tongue firmly planted in her cheek, Millie closed her book for effect. It was well enough that she should, the pages were in constant danger of falling victim to flying droplets —or once, a whole fish!— that splattered from the fisher-kids taking their chances with pole and proximity to the water. Today was pleasant enough, at least, the young witch decided that she could take a break from some reading for a while, too.

There was adventure enough in watching it, of course, or else she wouldn't enjoy her novels so much.

"Still say you're missing out eek!" In her enthusiasm and wild gesturing, Anne took a wrong step onto something slimy and found herself going rump first into the lake. A look of shock colored her face as she splashed down, suddenly soaked. Anne sat there a whole second before dissolving into a howl of laughter that probably hurt the chances of every child fishing near her.

Righting herself and sploshing out from the lake, Anne shook herself like an animal, water flying everywhere. "Millie, you're missing all the fun. Books are all about other people having fun, but what about you?"

Millie sat up with a start at the shriek of her best friend, powerless to do anything but watch her fall unceremoniously on her backside. For a moment, a look of sheer terror crossed her face. It was more shock than anything else, in the next second the young witch was already starting to feel the grip loose from her chest, though her fingers stayed on the necklace at her throat until she heard the tinkling laughter that turned into howls.

Yes, Anne was going to be all right.

"This book isn't even about that kind of fun," Millie grumbled for a moment, putting her hands down to trace the etching of the spine instead. The latest Mister Daubney novel had turned into an exercise of patience for her, in fact. Either this book wasn't as good as the rest, or she was starting to fall out of love with the character and his odd-mannered approach to solving intense mysteries, most of which turned out to be only knuckle-deep. "It's..."

Millie squealed and held the book up to shield herself from Anne's splashing, more mud than water by now. Then she stared in horror, genuine this time, at what she had done to the cover of her book. One drop had even made it past the spine to the pages, and she made it even worse by trying to wipe it away, feeling the grit slip between pages that would no doubt need cleaning later.

She stared up at her friend with a hapless expression, knowing well that the damage was already done, and that Anne might possibly be the worst person in the world to give sympathy for it. As Millie wondered how she could even be friends with such a literary heathen, the thought itself made a giggle burst from her throat. Then another.

And then there was nothing stopping the young witch from devolving into a fit of laughter just like Anne had a few moments ago, though for entirely different reasons. Who said she wasn't having fun?
