Appearance: At five feet, eleven inches, Clifford enjoys his height, but he doesn't have the bulk of his brother or late father. He is of average weight and has some slight muscle definition, but is hardly the definition of male athleticism. Clifford has dark brown hair and grey eyes that are signature Goyle and a host of freckles. Clifford is ambidextrous but learned to prioritize his right hand to avoid a smack to his knuckles. Clifford prefers to be clean-shaven and still looks like the young man fresh out of Hogwarts if it weren't for his expressive forehead creases. Despite his distrust of muggles, he does prefer their fashion choices.
He looks a lot like Luke Thompson.
History:
June 22, 1863 - Clifford Solomon Goyle is born at an early, respectable time to Alexander and Antiope Goyle. He joins Amos, 7, and Elinor, 3.1867- Amos is off to Hogwarts and four-year-old Clifford is ambivalent. His brother hardly bothered with him. Clifford is afforded more time with his father, but it is his sister he seems to seek out most frequently.
1871 - Elinor is off to Hogwarts and Clifford is far more affected than he was at the going of Amos. While he is upset, it manifests as delightful, melancholy solitude. Cliff's first showing of magic is to banish his dinner from his plate when the nurse refuses to let him leave the table until he eats. Problem solved.
1874 - Hogwarts calls for Clifford. Bringing home his new wand, Clifford enjoys his father's praise for being chosen by an elm wand. The second son, Clifford's never counted on his father's praise; that is reserved for Amos. Clifford has never been left wanting for love, but the affirmation is wonderful.
The Sorting Hat barely touches Clifford's head before sending him to Ravenclaw. A total of zero people are surprised. Clifford is forced into closer quarters with Muggleborns for the first time in his life; it is not what he expects.
1876 - Cliff proved an exceptional, but scattered student. When it comes time for electives, Cliff chooses Ancient Runes, Arithmancy, and Muggle Studies. Languages and math call to him, but he also chooses Muggle Studies. It's only logical to study the lesser creatures in his midst.
Spring of 1878 - While it is Elinor's debut year, Clifford is focused on his studies. He pays little attention to her choices of a suitor; Elinor has always been sensible. What should be a celebration of a successful match sees Clifford losing his beloved sister as his parents cut her from their lives completely. Clifford is at a loss.
1878-79 - Returning to school for his OWL year, Clifford is distracted and still reeling from the loss of Elinor. Where does his loyalty lie when his family turns their back on one of their own? While he passes all but two courses, Clifford is aware that his parents are less than pleased with his marks. Even he is disappointed as his marks are no reflection of his intelligence. Clifford is disappointed, angry at his sister, and wary of his parents. It seems like the very basis of his world is gone.
During the summer holiday, Clifford finds himself wandering Hogsmeade when he follows rather moving music. Skeptical, but with nowhere else to be, he stays for what turns out to be a church service. While he feels a bit like a wounded creature thrown to wolves, he isn't completely repulsed by this odd gathering. The idea of a muggleborn wizard somehow being the holy savior appointed by some divine deity to redeem the world is so ridiculous Clifford must investigate further.
1879-80 - Clifford returns for his sixth year with his father's command to improve his marks and remedy the stain on the family's honor. Thankfully, Clifford had no wish to join his father's law practice, as his brother had, but he was running out of time to choose his path. When not increasingly anxious about his future, Clifford is deep in his investigations of this Jesus fellow.
1780-81 - Clifford is far more prepared for NEWTs than he was for OWLs and his marks show it. Graduation comes and goes and the arrival of his scores means Clifford can finally announce his future plans to his family - he wishes to be a Healer. While there are some raised eyebrows at his choice, it is a solid career path. Ford begins his internship in September, choosing to focus on Magical Bugs, as it seems to offer the best path for future research. Ford has the intention of getting his experience and then dedicating himself to research. Someone else can deal with the filthy realities of the sick.
1882 - Ford completes his internship year and is surprised he's grown to love his clinical rotations. Maybe it's his investment in the Church, but human suffering is less something to ignore and more something to remedy.
1884 - Ford's courage and ingenuity are tested in ways he could never anticipate. The drought, plague, and fire seem almost biblical in proportion and Ford can't stay away. Once it's clear that purebloods are at higher risk, mother and father demand Ford step away from the hospital, but the existential threat, the mystery of a lifetime, is too much of a temptation.
Ford catches the Laughing Plague, as his parents feared, but he recovers quickly, almost miraculously. His father is not so fortunate. Ford's recovery deepens his belief in the tenets of the Church, but his father's death leaves him with a deep sense of guilt. Was this his punishment for disobeying the will of his father or something truly random?
Clifford suggests reaching out to Elinor after father's death. The idea is soundly rejected. Clifford writes to his sister in secret, wanting her to know about their father. Slowly, Clifford begins to reach for more.
1885 - Clifford moves from his family home into a house of his own. Ford continues to write his sister but keeps this from his mother and Amos.
1890 - Buried in his work, Ford's neglected his duties to be fruitful and multiply. He's established and can afford a family, he's even had several dalliances he hoped would develop into something more, but he is still unmarried. Instead of devoting himself to marriage, Ford applies for the assistant head position in his department. To his mild surprise, he scores the promotion.
1891 - Now advanced in his career, Ford is out of excuses to avoid the Season. While he longs for true companionship, he finds most suitable woman dense as stone and less interesting. What this season will bring, only time will tell.
Clifford missed his calling as a professor or scholar, but his ability to explain his thinking or make sense of his mental path to others strains what love he has for other humans. To those he deems worthy (and don't bother him with the obvious questions he is tireless in his desire to share and educate. Once a thought takes root, prepare to lose him to his musings.
Critical and determined to find the origin of all his queries, Clifford can wear down the most patient of people and tends to come across as insensitive in his quests, which could not be more untrue. As critical of himself as he is of others and never satisfied, Clifford is often stricken with deep bouts of self-doubt.
After a lifetime entrenched in purist doctrine, Clifford hesitates to commit to anything foundational, even though his faith calls him to answers and acceptance. After losing years with his sister, he may never feel sure again.
Clifford is eager to experience human connection but, alas, his experiments have been less than satisfactory. He has been in love multiple times, only to realize it was transitory lust quickly diminished when his paramour proved dull. He is endlessly disappointed by these discoveries, but breakthroughs require perseverance.
