My dearest Willard,

I hope your week has been well. If only I could say the same. Another one of my friends has announced her engagement, and made a fool of me with her comments that followed shortly. Oh how I should be engaged already, she said. If only she knew.

I think she should. I think everyone should know—or have my reservations in the past proved more contagious than I intended them to be? I am not embarrassed of you, and I realize that the secrecy may give the appearance of such. I know it is not an ideal situation for either of us, but I am now certain that time will heal the wounds between my family and I, especially when you prove to be the opposite that my father expects.

And I know you will.

With love,
Miss Delia Timmons

My most dear Delia,

I beg, do not take my hesitation as any measure of reluctance to see you become Mrs. Pryce—indeed, the prospect fills me entirely with joy. In spite of this, I cannot help but feel like something of a thief in the night, stealing you away from your family—but this is a feeling I must set aside, I know. In time, I must believe that they will see our union, one borne of love, to be superior to any match they might devise. Were our daughter to behave in such a fashion, however

No matter.

You are most right, our good news should be shared, and it is not right for you to have to lie to those you have dear. Perhaps, my love, we might start small to ease your concerns: tell the Wyndhams and Warringtons before we share the news far and wide? I am certain my dear Warrington, as well as my father and his daughters, would share merrily in the tidings.

In love and admiration,
W. Pryce
