History:Whether by genes, nutrition, or a combination of the two, Phaedra has always been small. At age ten she stands at a mere four feet, one inch tall and had a skinny frame that makes her appear only smaller. Her skin, unusually pale from years of confinement to her bedroom during summer colds and winter chills, might be considered a desirable complexion if not for the hundreds of freckles and misplaced bruises from bumping into the stair railings and tables.
She has long, medium brown hair that is often curled with scarves and styled in practical braids. Her eyes, perhaps her best feature, are wide and blue and stand out against the reddish freckles that pepper her cheeks and nose. Though her dress is plain and fitting of an orphan, she dreams of a life of pretty blue gowns with lace and ribbons. She writes with her right hand.
1880 | Phaedra Gamp is born the second daughter to Thackery and Cressida Gamp after numerous miscarriages and unsuccessful attempts to get pregnant. She is loved by her parents, but less so by her sister. Born weeks early and notably smaller than most newborns, it is speculated that Phaedra will not survive infancy. It is by miracle that both mother and daughter survive the first year.Personality:
1884 | The Laughing Plague strikes Hogsmeade, and everyone in her family apart from her contracts the illness, but it is the subsequent fires in Wellingtonshire that leaves Phaedra and her sister orphaned. Phaedra and her sister are sent to live with their Great-Aunt Jessamine, who agrees to take in Hesper and only Hesper. Having speculated that the four-year-old was destined to be a squib after failing to contract the Laughing Plague—which primarily targeted purebloods—along with her family, she is sent to St. Mungo's Home for Inconvenient Children instead. There Phaedra is left with little more than a suitcase and a first name. Though payment for being housed with other middle-class youths is intiially issued, the payments stop abruptly and she is left to earn her keep by helping with chores. Phaedra still remembers the overwhelming distress and confusing from her first day in the orphanage, but little more. Memories of her parents fade, as does the memory of her great-aunt and sister.
1885 | Nearly seven months into the orphanage, Phaedra has become well-adjusted to the life of an orphan. She stays on everyone's good side, keeps her head down, and offers to help the scary children to keep them off her tail. Her small size proves a blessing, as she is able to hide from bullies while earning the mercy of older children. With little memory of her former family and no remembrance of her surname, she gives herself the name "Phaedra Little"—most often listed as "Little, Phaedra" on all of her things.
1886 | Phaedra asks the woman who runs the orphanage about her family, she she is given a non-answer. She had two parents who died, she is told, but little more. She longs to know if they had any siblings who would take in their orphaned niece, or if she'd had any siblings who died alongside them (because it would be impossible to have living siblings, else they would be in the orphanage with her).
1887 | Phaedra begins fostering a family of mice that live in the home, and is distraught when they are killed in traps. She is bullied for her tears, and even beaten by one of the older girls who told her she needed to learn to "toughen up". She learns to carry her burdens with a heavy heart and expressionless face, and becomes less willing to open up to new children as they come.
1888 | The Irvingly Fog Crisis provides something new to worry about. The quarantine does not affect her at all, but the stress in the home does; the children become meaner and the overseers more strict. Phaedra begins to wonder if she'll be a witch at all, or if she'll be turned to the streets if it's determined she's a squib.
1890 | At age ten and still without a single display of magic, Phaedra resorts to lies when the other children ask her about it. She is unable to face the prospect of being a squib—not when the home would have paid for her to go to Hogwarts for three whole years!
