Appearance: Eliza is 5 foot 4 inches tall, because of her mothers insistence she wears a very tightly laced corset which accentuates her small waist and good sized bosom. However, she grew into her womanhood very late and was a rather gangly and awkward child/teen. She is not overly comfortable with her femininity and considers herself to be very plain, especially in comparison to some of her sisters. She has long blonde hair and a bone structure similar to her mothers. That is to say she had very high cheek bones, a sharp nose, and naturally thinner lip, but it is well pronounced and a naturally bright shade of pink. Her eyes are a blue grey, definitely closer to grey than to blue – think storm sea. She wears very practical clothing when working in the museum – generally long dark skirts, with delicate blouses with English point work. For balls and events, she does however, wear fashionably cut clothing in flattering colours. And she tries to keep herself looking as fashionable and modern as possible.
History: Elizabeth was born the first born child of William and Jane Cardew in the village of Boggy Bottom, Hertfordshire. The eldest of what would be 13 children Elizabeth was raised as the pragmatic, straight talking older sister capable, and willing, to keep the large Cardew brood in check.
She had her first display of magic when her new little sibling was crying and squaling for the nursemaid who wasn’t responding quickly enough and the toddler Eliza ‘threw’ a glass bottle of milk into the crib. It was super dangerous but the baby wasn’t hurt and everyone was delighted.
Her father was an academic, a chart maker with the navel discovery services, he would be gone for long periods of time and come home and talk about all of the exciting places he had been, all the things he had seen and it filled her with a similar interest. She had a natural ear for languages and a nack for history, and by the time she was shipped off to Hogwarts she was already well read in French, German and Italian.
The family moved to Hogseade in 1877, just before Eliza went off to school, it provided the dual benefit of providing the family with the protection and comfort of an all wizarding village and allowed the family to be closer to the school and thus more of their children on things like Hogsmeade weekends.
Eliza loves the idea of going off to school, but finds herself retreating into her shell, now that she is away from her large family where she is the oldest, the brightest, the most outspoken, and thus the head honcho – now she is the smallest, in a very large school with people much older than her, and she is sorted into a house with many others all of whom are as bright as she is.
However, on the way to the school she meets Fortuna Lockhart and is incredibly pleased when the other girl is also sorted into Ravenclaw, the house she had joined only minutes before.
As her Hogwarts years progress she takes on as much as she can academically, her confidence returning as she finds herself again, growing in personal confidence, still aware however, of her awkward gaukish physicality when so many of her housemates and friends are developing into ‘women’ – other than her monthlies she doesn’t feel particularly womanly. She learned that wit and pithiness can make up for what she feels are physical short comings.
She takes 7 newts ( History of Magic, Ancient Runes, Transfiguration, Charms, Ancient studies, Gobbledegook, and Defense against the dark arts). However, in her more practical classes her interest is primarily theory and history rather than application. So while her end results were good, she definitely struggeled more in the practical aspects of each course, but doing very well in the written or theoretical sections.
She debuted with the Hogwarts COB, although was not exactly a spectacular social success. She goes to work at the museum, she knows she cannot work in the same field as her father but she can categorise, document and care for the fruits of labours such as his. It turns out that Fortuna is also intending to go to work in the Museum and they are both accepted onto staff.
Eliza moves back to another part of Hogsmeade, Bartonburg, to live in the home of her spinster aunt, so she can be closer to work and because her aunt is now of an age to want and need more company at home, also with other ‘not out’ children still in the family home it allows her mother more freedom rather than worrying about her daughters social engagements. Her sister Georgiana moves up to the house as well when she finished her education.
Personality: She is funny, witty, pithy, and charming, but holds herself, and her sisters to a very high standard of behaviour. She is intelligent, creative and perhaps a little outspoken. If she had her way she would travel the world but is also proper and forthright and so wont be flinging herself around the planet as a single woman. She has an ear for languages and will mutter under her breath in other languages if she is frustrated or working on something that engrosses her. She cannot STAND intellectual snobbery, or vice versa, people who hate on intelligence. She is down to earth, would get her hands dirty if needed and is capable of incredibly focused. She will tell you her opinion –especially if you try and go toe to toe with her, she won’t bite her tongue. She does however, have some insecurities about her appearance and could be easily wounded if there were comments made about her physicality.
Other: She speaks French, German, Italian, Gobbledook, and is learning mermish, she can currently have a casual conversation in mermish. She can also read and translate, sancrit, ancient Egyptian, ancient runes, decipher hieroglyphs and hieratic.
