Suffrage Bill To Wizengamot
Dempsey's Reform Committee Finalizes Draft
The Voting Reform Committee formed at the beginning of this year under direction of Minister of Magic Ozymandias Dempsey has put forth a proposed bill, which will be reviewed and debated during the next Wizengamot sitting. The full details of the bill are not yet available but a representative from the Ministry said the Minister is both "pleased with the proposal's contents and optimistic about the Wizengamot's response."
Speculation has been running rampant for months as to how a compromise could possibly be reached on this issue between Minister Dempsey (in some policies described as a centrist but in this particular issue very much a liberal; suffrage for women was a tenant of his campaign) and the Wizengamot, lead by conservative Chief Warlock Lucius Lestrange.
Dempsey's committee included both liberals and conservatives, including Ministry employees, Wizengamot members, and notable community members — a move analysts generally suspect was done to distance himself personally from the resulting proposal in an attempt to make it more palatable to Wizengamot members who would never have voted for him as Minister. Time will tell whether or not this strategy has paid off.
Although exact details are not available, we know from earlier comments made by committee members that all changes proposed include a "grandfather clause" whereby no one who currently has the right to vote can expect to lose it. Analysts generally expect the vote to be much more widely available if this proposal in put into law, though given that it took six months to write it we can presume it does not simply give the vote to everyone, as some conservative critics feared when voting reform was first discussed.
