History:
Lerion Gilbert Galcote was born on the 12th of February, 1850 in Laxey, on the Isle of Man, together with his twin sister Goneril. Lerion demonstrated first signs of magical ability on his fifth birthday, reigniting the candles on the birthday cake after his sister had blown them out when he had intended to do so.
As broommaking was the family trade, all three children learned to fly on broomsticks quite early on, but Lear was all but excited about flying. In fact, Lear seemed to be lacking any real hobbies, interests or motivation right until he began attending Hogwarts in 1861. There, he first discovered his interest in history. History of Magic was his favourite subject from the first lesson onward. His real passion, however, would reveal itself only in his third year, when he was allowed to enroll in Ancient Studies. He was entirely infatuated by stories of Greek soothsayers, Celtic druids and various pagan rituals. He soon devoted most of his time to the pursuit of ancient knowledge. He also did rather well at Ancient Runes and Muggle Studies, achieving high marks in both his O.W.L. and N.E.W.T. examinations in these subjects.
As Lear dedicated so much of his time at Hogwarts to studying, he was somewhat of a social outcast during his school years. His only close friend was his twin sister Goneril, but as she developed into much more of a social butterfly, the two slowly began drifting apart after completing their O.W.L. examinations.
During his time at Hogwarts, Lear also discovered that he was not really interested in women, but men. During his sixth year, he fell hopelessly in love with one of his classmates, who had, unfortunately, himself had a crush on Lear's twin sister. As Lear watched his sister slowly grow fond of his crush as well, he distanced himself from her. Despite this, he didn't let his sister know of his feelings, nor why he sought distance from her. Goneril interpreted this as Lear simply being jealous of the fact she was now spending less time with him, but rather with her new sweetheart, and thus broke off the relationship only after a few months - something she felt pressured to do, and which caused a rift between the siblings that reached its greatest extent just after they graduated in 1868.
After he graduated, Lear, thanks to his high marks in Ancient Studies and Ancient Runes, was able to become a curse-breaker, first working at Gringott's. Lear, however, quickly became bored with London, longing to see the ancient sites he had learned about up close and in person. Thus, after three years of working as a curse-breaker, he embarked on a journey around the world.
His travels took Lear to every corner of the Earth with any sort of magical significance; Stonehenge, Mount Olympus, the Black Forest and the Harz Mountains of Germany, Egypt, New Orleans... Any place which had found mention as a focal point of magical energy or activity, he visited. As he travelled, Lear dutifully wrote down his findings, describing ancient rituals and cataloguing artifacts. After seven years of doing so, he was able to publish his first book on the subject, A Primer to the Magic of the Ancients, which describes basic magical rituals and beliefs of various European tribes, in 1877. After he completed his travels, he felt compelled to return to the Island of Man and further investigate the magical history of the Channel Islands, publishing his findings in another book in 1882. By this point, Lear was already an established researcher and expert in his field, and soon after, he was invited to become a member of the Ministry of Magic's Research Comittee, which he accepted. His work as a committee member consisted of analysing how Muggles interact with various magical sites around the world, as well as research concerning whether wizards who lived or were born close to said magical sites were more powerful or more adept at magic. He remained a member of the Research Committe until 1889, when, bored with the desk-focused work at the Committee, he applied for the job of Ancient Studies professor at Hogwarts, which had since been vacated. There, he remains to this day.
Personality: Lear is very excitable, ambitious, humorous, friendly and forthcoming. Social cues are often not immediately clear to him, so he may come across as a bit of an oddbal, slightly socially inept. When it comes to relationships, he is thus rather shy and reserved and pretty difficult to get out of his shell. As a professor, he clearly differentiates between work and play; he is strict during his lessons, but very laid-back outside of class, and always has an open ear for his students or other faculty members. Although his status as a Confirmed Bachelor is more or less public knowledge, he does not pursue romantic relationships with anyone, and prefers to keep private things as private as he possibly can. He will talk about his latest research and discoveries to anyone willing to listen, but is also just as interested in the work and research of his colleagues.
Other: Lear is, next to English, fluent in Manx.
