Unless a much better prospect makes itself available in the very near future, you are quite right that it is my intention to marry Mr. Macmillan. I have, however, focused largely upon the big picture of the matter, so if you would subtly investigate the following details that would be uncomfortable for me to question him about directly, I should be in your debt.
1. His feelings towards and intentions for his daughter
2. Whether he still dreams fondly of Noelle (very doubtful; our cousin was hardly a delight to be in company with)
3. His position in his father's esteem
Please take care not to frighten him off; I promise he is much better company than your own spouse.
