Anonymous Conversations - Nelson Higgs - October 21, 2020

Open to anyone for the NEWT Etiquette Project

19th October, 1890

Dear Pen Pal,

I hope this letter finds you well. Are you fond of writing letters? I have to say writing to someone else in the castle is a change from always writing home to the family. My parents usually seem to ask a hundred questions and the letters in reply seem to take as long to write as a whole History of Magic essay.

On that note, I have narrowed my questions down for you to just a few, which are: how have you found this school year so far? Going well, I hope? Are you juggling many classes or many extracurriculars?

I look forward to your reply. It will save me actually having to write that latest History of Magic essay.

Yours sincerely,
Horatio

I quite like letters myself, for I often find it easier to say what I wish to say than it would be in person. Maybe that is cowardly of me but I think it better than saying nothing at all. That is why I find this assignment so interesting. The anonymity of it all makes people bolder. I do not know who you are and nor you. We might have never spoken before and may have never without this assignment.

The school year is going well enough. I will be honest, I cannot wait to graduate but I can't say it is bad. My class load certainly keeps me busy. I'm taking six - astronomy, charms, divination, herbology, potions, and transfiguration. As far as clubs, I used to do more but now I am in Chess, Divination, and French clubs. I enjoy the clubs but sometimes they have to be missed when school picks up.

How busy does your schedule keep you? You mentioned that you still take history of magic. What else do you take? I will admit HoM was one of the classes I was most excited to stop.  I could barely stay awake in that class.

Dear Roseceae,

I find it much easier to say things in letters than in person as well.* What sort of things do you wish you could say to people, if you were bold enough? (Don’t feel bound to answer that. Mrs. Benwick might not be pleased with some of the possibilities. Good day, Mrs. Benwick!)

I can barely think of graduation yet; it still feels quite far away, and I suppose my future is quite open in that vague, horrifying way, where I have no idea what to do with it. But I am interested to leave school and remember there’s a whole world outside of it.

That’s why I like History, so much has happened that’s worth remembering. Besides that, I am in Arithmancy, Ghoul Studies, and Astronomy, Herbology and Potions with you, I suppose! And I take Art too, not that I’m any good. Do you have a favourite amongst your classes? By the pseudonym you chose, my guess would be Herbology, but that might just be because I like it best. I’ll forgive you if it’s not.

Yours sincerely,
Horatio
