Apple of My Eye - Elsie Kirke - September 10, 2020

September 8th, 1890
Tyb,

Happy birthday! How does twenty-five feel? Doesn't Hogwarts seem like a lifetime ago?

I have included your customary treats and a homemade apple pie. I hope it's alright, I almost overcooked it and the crust looked a little dark...

Since I am now harboring pieces of a swing I cannot yet use- you are now in charge of growing our apple tree to hang it from. Fortunately for you, it's been grown and charmed to fit in the size of its container, which for now is small. All you need to do is water it and make sure it gets a little sunlight, think you can handle that? It should fit right on your desk for now.

I miss you.
All my love,
Elsie

Els,

Twenty-five is definitely bad news. I woke up feeling like an old man. Old and decrepit and falling apart. I think my knees are going. And my hips. To think that this is the beginning of actually being eligible!

I didn’t notice a thing, but if you think a burnt crust could stop me, you don’t know me at all... But of course you know me too well, because you must realise that growing an apple tree is a big responsibility for me. I will dote on it, don’t you worry. Water, sunlight. Think it’ll make any difference if I take it for walks and pet it too?

Thank you so much for the pie and the baby tree. You know I miss you too.

Love,
Tyb

Tyb,

How horrible! I wonder what it will have in store for me in the spring. One step closer to spinsterhood, my mother must be positively panicked by now.

I'm glad you found it satisfactory. Trying to keep the sweets new and interesting. I have peaches for the next one.

You know, I have heard that talking to plants helps them grow. I wonder how much truth it holds. I'll have to see if there's anything in the library about it. I have faith you can handle it. It doesn't require too much work. We need somewhere to hang my swing after all.

Hopefully I will see you soon. Have you heard from Miss Delaney recently? I have yet to hear about tea, but I didn't want to be a pest.
All my love,
Elsie
