How Eccentric is "Slightly"? - Stella Beauregard - August 1, 2020

15th July, 1890
To the so-called "Slightly Eccentric",

I hope that my letter finds you well, whomever you are.

It is entirely by chance that I stumbled upon advertisement, but it strikes me as fortuitous indeed, for the very characteristics you describe in an ideal partner are those exemplified by my daughter. Though pleasing to the eye, I must confess that her true beauty lies within her soul. E. is in possession of one of the most compassionate and intelligent minds I have had the fortune to encounter in my years, and has always been drawn to intellectual pursuits and like-minded friends.

Were I to report any flaws in her, they would center around her ability to take the reins for herself—at least, not as quickly as a mother would desire of a beloved child. Still, it is paramount to me that my children find happiness in life, and so I shall not direct her to meet you until I have had opportunity to confirm your suitability. She is an excellent judge of character for herself, of course, but youth is a precious thing best not wasted.

If, indeed, you are a man of good intentions and able to provide for her a comfortable home, I would welcome continued correspondence.

Sincerely,
A devoted mother
