Really Could Use Some Help - Alina MacRae - January 21, 2020

January 21, 1890 - Hogwarts Library
So far Alina was doing fairly OK in her classes. Not needing too much extra help, it was certainly great to have an older student willing to tutor her.

But as of this evening, she was having a hard time. Miss Fairchild was too busy to help, and the subject was fairly hard for this evenings homework. Looking at Miss Fudge, she poked her on the arm softly. "Do you understand this?" Hopefully it wasn't just her having a hard time. That would be bad.

If anyone would tell Sunday that she would spend some evenings in the library, it wasn't something that she would have bet on - were she a betting type of child. She was just about to put quill to paper again after having taken a small break, when she felt a little prod at her arm.

After finishing writing her name, she peered over to her left, an expectant expression on her face. "Hmm?"

Oh, curse the fact that they had to talk so quietly in the library. Pointing to her homework, she gave a halfhearted shrug. "Does this make sense to you?" While it might seem selfish, Alina hoped the answer was no. She would hate to feel stupid.

Sunday looked over at Miss O'Malley's piece of parchment, scanning the instructions. "Oh!" Shoot, she hadn't gotten to this part yet. She re-read the instructions before grabbing her own Defense Against the Dark Arts book. A pout of frustration appeared on her face. "I understand the words?" She quipped, cracking a small grin.

Her actions said one thing, but her words said something a little different. Well, that was nice. Alina understood almost all of the words as well. Perhaps further understanding of the problem would help her fully understand the problem itself. So Alina watched as Miss Fudge went about her search.

Quips did not seem to get the 11 year old anywhere, and so she straightened her expression before focusing on the task at hand. "Well, it's about different types of defense spells and where they'd be pertinent, isn't it?" she clarified, glancing back at her notes from the last class they had.

Pertinent? Her face went blank for a moment as she tried to think of that word for a good long moment. It meant something similar to another one, didn't it? Relevant? Yes, that was it. "Um, yes. I believe so." These longer words were more difficult to understand sometimes. Oh, when they got to the spell words. She had to remind herself that all she needed to do was learn how to say it and what the spell was. Shouldn't be too difficult, right? Not with all of the extra effort. The hunt for as many tutors and guidance as she could possibly obtain?

"Well!" The Gryffindor said, hopping out of her chair and taking her wand out. Of course she wouldn't be casting spells, but they needed to know different stances, didn't they? "You have to determine which positions are the most likely to work with defensive spells!" Oooohhh, where was her Defense Against the Dark Arts book? Sunday put her wand down and glanced quickly at the spines of the books she had with her.

"Here!" she chirped, before heaving the massive book and placing it between them. Flipping to the corresponding page, she tapped on the illustrations. "See, this position –" she took it "might be more useful than position two" she demonstrated again, her eyebrows shooting up slightly as she realized she actually understood what the homework was asking. "So the question is asking which positions would be more useful and why." Sunday paused to look at Miss O'Malley. Hopefully she understood this, otherwise, Sunday figured she might as well count this as her daily exercise.

The sudden movement was a bit alarming, but Alina quickly got over it. She wanted to figure this out, not look like a scared babe. Nodding, she decided to stand up as well and glance back at her book while Miss Fudge was looking for hers.

Listening, it started to become more within her grasp of understanding. Looking at Miss Fudge, she slowly got into what she hoped was the same position. Making a fool of herself would be utterly humiliating. "I think I understand. This one would work better because it fits with what we are trying to do with the spell?"

"Yes," Sunday said, smiling. She checked the parchment again, unrolling her notes she'd taken taken. "Um. So, then the task is to try and differentiate which positions would be most suitable for the spells we've learned and then list in detail why we think so."

She peered over the piece of parchment at the other girl and blinked. "Does that help?"

When she wanted to be, Alina was a really good listener. Keeping herself in school was something she wanted badly. Make her life better. That meant studying hard and being unafraid to ask for help, and listen. "It does, thank you." She didn't like not understanding the little things. But she worked at it constantly.

"You're welcome!" Sunday chirped, glad that she was able to be of help. To boot, it was nice to know she understood the material enough to teach others!
