{SWP 9} See a Penny, Pick it Up -

January 11th, 1890 — Hogsmeade High Street
You hadn't noticed until you got home that what you had thought was a sickle was actually some sort of older coing but, still in excellent spirits from having won so handily at cards, you pay it no mind. A good luck token if ever you saw one—after all, had you not made a clean sweep of the table?
The next day finds you ambling along Hogsmeade's High Street, your new talisman in your pocket, your fingers playing idly with it as you pass storefront after storefront before finally choosing one to enter.

Rufus Bixby - January 12, 2020
Rufus was not normally one for cards, at least not since his marriage. They often needed the money for more important things such as the running of their small household. Wven the small amount of coin he might win in such a game he thought put to much better use in making sure Tuni would want for very little. But last night he had met with some of the other players for a game and it had turned out well. After all he had won quite well. For his indulgence, however, he felt that he should also indulge Tuni, a new book perhaps, should do the trick. She would like that, as well as taking a look at the old coin that had been won. Perhaps it would even give her the same luck it had bestowed on Rufus.
Entering Whizzhard books Rufus very nearly ran right into someone. Apparently the luck of the coin did not extend to physical dexterity, only his quidditch reflexes prevented the collision. "
Begging your pardon." Rufus apologized.

Adam was, frankly, a little annoyed to be out at the moment. The fact that he was going through the training for a second time meant that the instructors knew him better than the other students, but that familiarity never translated to anything beneficial for him. Adam didn't expect special treatment from the instructors, by any stretch of the imagination, and he didn't even mind when they went a little harder on him than the other students. He did mind, however, when they asked him to run errands for him — even though the errand was, he supposed, related to the training program.
(In fairness, this was the first time he'd been asked to do it, but he was annoyed all the same).
He checked the list again, going through the titles.
Poisons and their Antidotes, 50 Plant-Based Ways to Die, Beyond Bezoars... The least the instructor could have done was put them in some sort of order. Adam was busy referencing the list against the stack of books in his arms when another man nearly bowled him over.
"Well, no harm done," he said amiably — though he would have been far less amiable had the pile of books ended up scattered across the floor.

Rufus looked at the man and gave him a smile, sure the man would feel much less inclined toward such a blunder had his stack of books gone clattering down - Tuni certainly would have. “
Thankfully.” Rufus agreed with a nod at the stack of books, absentmindedly reaching into his pocket to make sure the coin was still safe. His fingers rubbed the rough metal reassuringly and he found himself wondering if perhaps it was lucky in this too.

As you idly scan the bookshelves, still fingering the talisman, a shock runs up your arm and you let out a noise of displeasure.

Adam was on the verge of making a simple answer and taking his leave — the interaction, from his perspective, having run its course — when the other man let out a noise that was quite unexpected. It sounded almost as if he were in pain. Adam took a quick step back, startled by the emission, and then eyed the other man curiously.
"Er... are you alright?" he asked tentatively.

Unexpectedly a jolt went up Rufus’s arm. A mix of a yelp or ‘ow’ crossed Rufus’s lips unintentionally (use to pain he liked to think he was typically good at hiding it) surprising himself, and likely the fellow he’d almost bumped into.
At the man’s question Rufus took stock of himself. A stinging pain lingered and he was left with the impression that the coin had, for lack of a better word) shocked him. “
Yeah.” He responded automatically as his fingers drew the coin out of his pocket for inspection. He held it in front of himself, eyeing it, wondering how such pain could have come from it. Surely it hadn’t been the coin, had it? Perhaps it was just an old quidditch wound acting up - but even Rufus knew that wasn’t likely the case. “
I think it did something to me.” Rufus explained as he moved it around to look at each angle, had he missed something when he picked it up.

You move closer to inspect the object he has in hand, finding yourself drawn to the light that glints from its surface. Though it is plainly not new, it seems rather shiny nonetheless...

Adam had a lot of questions as the other man pulled the little coin from his pocket. What
was it, and what did the man think it had done to him? Where had it come from, and why would it potentially have the power to do things of its own accord?
His thoughts got a bit muddled, however, when he actually saw it. What a strange little object — so shiny and oddly appealing, but so strange and exotic at the same time. "Where did you get that?" he asked, wondering how much the other man knew about the origins of this coin.

The man approached Rufus intrigued by the coin. As his eyes locked onto it Rufus felt rather guarded of the object. It wasn’t the man’s, it was his. But this surge of jealousy was tampered by the reminder that likely, and more sanely, the man simply was curious. As Tuni would be when he showed her.
“
Won it in a game of cards.” Rufus said with a shrug, closing his palm around the small coin involuntarily. That was enough interest from the other man, he seemed to unintentionally decide.

Gambling was something Adam knew nothing about, nor did he think he ever would. It was too reckless of a hobby to be endorsed by his faith, and even if it wasn't, he never had extra money that he might feel comfortable squandering in such a way.
The man closed his fist around the coin, and Adam glanced back up at his face. "What do you think it did?"

“
It rather felt like a bite.” Well that wasn’t really the case. No, it felt more like… “
Like a stinging bite. A stab up the arm.” The more Rufus talked the more he became convinced that perhaps it was all in his imagination in the first place. After all this was a coin they were talking about. He was definitely beginning to feel foolish as it rested in his closed palm, completely innocuous.

Adam frowned, considering. The description he'd given could certainly have been something magical, and it sounded a little like a stinging hex from the words he'd used. It could have been something completely mundane, however, too, particularly since the coin's origin and the material that it was made of were unknown at this point.
"Like static electricity?" he asked, though he didn't expect the man to agree. At the very least, it seemed like it must have hurt more than just a little shock caused by friction (based, at least on the sound that he'd made in reaction).

"
Something like that." Rufus nodded, at least that was a reasonable explanation, even if it didn't really encompass what he'd felt. Like the fact that he had felt the jolt in his very bones, all the way up to his elbow. That'd just sound like he was wonkers. No, pretty to just end this conversion and make his way into the bookstore.

The man didn't seem to want to talk about it, which was fine with Adam. He wasn't one to pry, and this man had a right to his own business — provided it wasn't illegal, which there was no indication that this was. Just some gambling and a strange happenstance with an old coin.
"Dervish and Banges might take a look at it," he suggested. "They've got magical repairmen on staff who can diagnose things — if it's got some sort of spell that's malfunctioning. Or they might be able to tell you more about it, in general," he added as he returned his attention to his books. They weren't going to know about anything particularly rare or esoteric, since they spent most of their time repairing sneak-o-scopes and self-writing quills and other common magical items, but they might at least give him a little insight into what it was that he'd picked up in his game — and why it was apparently shocking him.

Rufus wouldn't have even thought to go to Devish and Banges, let alone that the coin might have a spell malfunctioning. Safer to let them look at it then Tuni, especially in her current state. "
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll have to see if they may be able to help." He did appreciative the man's help and felt as if he hadn't adequately made this known.
