Thaddeus Davies vs. Handsome Whitledge - Eugene Scamander - January 31, 2019

February 2nd, 1889 - Howlers Stadium

These were going to be entertaining at least? Right? Right. Eugene read the  rules this round's participants and nodded at Mr. Davies to begin.

RE: Thaddeus Davies vs. Handsome Whitledge - Thaddeus Davies - January 31, 2019

Thaddeus had always been fascinated by dueling, particularly the fact that it required much quick thinking in a short amount of time. It was a challenge in that sense, and he figured there would be no harm in participating in the clinic rounds -- he was by no means silly enough to participate in the true competitions.

He did recognize his opponent for the most ridiculous reason: he remembered Handsome's name from its frequent repetition in Witch Weekly, which Thaddeus would only admit to on pain of death. This was the famed rebel and supposed eligible bachelor? Mr. Whitledge could not have been much out of Hogwarts, given the youthful softness of his face.

Thaddeus bowed respectfully and raised his wand, raising his voice to cast "Tarantallegra!" He figured it best to give the crowd a show, and what better way than by attempting to have Mr. Whitledge dance wildly?

Clinic bracket or not, an wave of anxiety overcame Handsome the moment he realized he was set to be facing fully-grown adults. They might not be seasoned duelists or auror potential, but he couldn't argue against their years of experience with simple spell-casting - something he was sorely lacking in at nineteen years of age. His experience in dueling had been in his NEWT-level Defence Against the Dark Arts class and the school's dueling tournaments, but even then he'd been pitted against students of lesser or equal ability.

Was he fucked? Probably. The only thing that encouraged him was his first opponent, a man of thirty or forty (he couldn't figure out which, and he stared at him too long to be polite in an attempt to figure it out), who didn't seem all too intimidating. Yet.

"Protego!" he cast, a little too quickly and a little too loudly, giving away his inexperience more than his physical features could.

Eugene's favorite part did have to be watching what people chose to use in duels. He was never disappointed. If he really got to choose, he'd give Mr. Davies bonus points for creativity. Unfortunately Mr. Whitledge's protection spell was just a bit stronger. How disappointing. "The round to Mr. Whitledge, you may begin the next."

Phew. Handsome smiled down at the floor, trying to slow his heart that was threatening to beat out of his chest. He didn't want to appear nervous, but neither did he want to faint. He gripped his wand in hand, pondering on all offensive possibilities. There was a list of spells he'd always used during school dueling tournaments, but here, in the real world, he could be creative.

Handsome lifted his wand and attempted to create a hole in the floor beneath his opponent.

This was extremely exciting, Thaddeus realized as he waited for Mr. Whitledge to cast. He needed to get out more often, experience new things! Duel more duels? Maybe not duels in seriousness, but the structure and safety of the dueling competition made the risk acceptable.

He raised his wand and cast a firm, "Finite Incantatem!"

Welp, that success didn't seem to last long. Mr. Whitledge's charm was not nearly as thoughtful as Mr. Davies' attempt to end it altogether. "This one to Mr. Davies, in which you now begin the last." He hoped.

Thaddeus had gotten lucky, and he was acutely aware of this being the final round. He needed something showy, but effective... "Rictusempra!"

Attempting to send Mr Whitledge into fits of laughter seemed showy enough.

Watching Mr. Davies lift his wand, Handsome cast a simple shield charm. Definitely not showy, but his ribs might thank his later.

All in all, Eugene was a little underwhelmed today. It seemed everybody was able to take the lead when needed. "Mr. Whitledge prevails, well done gentlemen." Eugene announced with little fanfare.
