Mr & Mrs - Maeve Connolly - October 1, 2018

September 29th, 1888 — Skeeter Residence, Bartonburg, Hogsmeade

She had said “I do”, and was now the new Mrs. Skeeter. Maeve frowned at herself at that, for while she loved with all her heart and soul the man lying in the bed beside her, still asleep, “Maeve Skeeter” did not sound at all ideal. Could she remain Connolly? Would he take Connolly?

No, that would be a slight to his manhood which, while disproportionate to the rest of him, was so often called into question as it was, given his short stature. She could not bear to do him such a disservice!

The band about her ring finger served as a reminder of the joyful future they had to look forward to together, and it was it at which the redhead stared intensely as she had these thoughts. They had gotten so quickly to the marriage business that the actual logistics of wedded bliss had not quite been worked out. Guiltily, she realized she still hadn’t informed him of her family’s…expectations.

(This was due in part to the fact that she wanted to keep him from her family as long as possible, both because she was not looking forward to the torment she would receive and because, in keeping him wholly to herself, things such as lounging in bed were much more convenient.)

Her dearest began to stir, jerking Maeve from her reverie, and it was to her loving face that his eyes opened.

Marriage thus far had been a whirlwind of love and bliss. He hadn't the slightest idea why he'd not thought of proposing to Maeve sooner &mash; he could call her Maeve now — the thrill of it and of having her lying in his arms as they fell asleep together had been enough to have him fall asleep with a foolish grin on his face.

He knew with certainty that he would be happy for the rest of his life as he awoke to his wife's beautifully freckled face. For some reason, he'd once thought her looks to be unfortunate... but he had to have been wrong in the head and not looked properly! She was the most exquisite creature he'd ever laid eyes upon. The dusting of speckles along her cheeks enhanced her features and he'd come to know each and every one of them. He'd secretly been delighted to discover that they were not limited to just the parts of her that had been exposed to the sun.

"You're perfect," He grinned like the love-stricken soul that he was and brushed a loose strand of ginger hair away from her face, "Did you sleep well?"

“Better than ever,” Maeve replied warmly, though rationally she knew that wasn’t strictly true. The redhead had always been a light sleeper, and having someone else in the bed had not made matters at all easier. Still, the notion of spending a night next to him was wondrous, and so she would stick to that.

“It’s so strange, waking up somewhere new—though in time,” Maeve added with some hesitation, “you’ll experience that yourself.”

Barney Skeeter was sweet, kind, and understanding. Surely he wouldn’t mind selling his home—so quaint!—and moving to Ireland? Part of Maeve hated to bring it up so early in their marriage, to risk upsetting her dearest one, but the auror could not bear to keep such a secret from the man to whom she had bound herself.

He'd experience somewhere new himself? It confused him for a moment, and then it clicked. Of course! She wanted to talk about moving house - to a larger one. It made sense. He hadn't exactly been prepared to elope. Had he known he was going to whisk her away and marry her, he would have at least seen to it that he had found somewhere large than a one-bedroom for them to live. There were probably better ways to go about discussing it rather than just hinting at it (which was an odd tactic, given his interactions with Maeve up until this point.)

"Oh yes," He agreed heartily. Strangely, he was not at all perturbed by the odd way she'd gone about it, "We can go house hunting this afternoon if you'd like. I believe there's a nice little four bedroom a few streets over. It's further from the park so won't have such nice views, but there'll be room to spread out." He hoped that even though they would have extra rooms, she wouldn't mind still sharing one with him. He rather liked the idea of having her sleep next to him every night.

Maeve hesitated for a long moment. They were in such a blissful bubble of love and contentment. Was it not a shame to shatter that so soon? But he was already talking about moving house, so surely he wasn’t nearly as married to the dwelling in which the pair now lay as he was to the woman in his arms.

“Actually,” she offered after clearing her throat uncomfortably, “that won’t be necessary. I am sure my family will be eager indeed to have you move into Connolly House—husbands and wives always do, you see…”

The smile she gave him was sheepish, almost apologetic, and Maeve did her best to look as sweet and innocent (both a stretch) as possible so he couldn’t be upset with her. Besides, it wouldn’t be right away—after all, she had to work up the courage to confess what had transpired, first.

His brows furrowed in confusion, "What do you mean?" Move into her family house? Did they really all live together after they were married? In separate houses, surely? She can't very well expect him to live with her as his wife in his parents' home? How was he ever going to get to enjoy marital relations with her father in the next room?!

If she was adamant, he would do it, of course. His lovely wife was allowed to make any demand she wanted of him. She deserved all of the happiness in the world. He'd promised he'd be the best husband to her. Giving in to a marriage full of family and parents and no alone time would be painful, but worth it if it made the love of his life smile.

“It’s the Connolly way,” she answered simply with as good a shrug she could muster in her current position. “As soon as they find out, they’ll bring it up—I didn’t want to see you ambushed.”

RE: Mr & Mrs - Barnabas Skeeter - October 3, 2018

"Oh," He nearly let out a defeated sigh, but managed to disguise it with a cough instead, "I... I see. That's a bit of a surprise, darling." Barnabas reached for her to hold her close - partly so that she couldn't see the panic in his face and partly because he liked how soft and warm she was. She hadn't expanded on it overly much which made it very clear to him - it was not up for discussion. Very well. He would concede with this. Hopefully down the road - for marriage was a very long road - she would concede in something for him.

"I'll do whatever makes you happy," He said against her hair, squeezing his eyes shut in a wince as if someone had kicked him between the legs.

Maeve knew his soul better than she knew the man himself, but even a blind woman would have been able to judge that Barney was not overjoyed by this revelation. She would, the redhead resolved, have to make it up to him—ideally before they moved under the same roof as her parents, siblings, and cousins!

“That can be a task for tomorrow,” she offered cajolingly, swiftly pecking him on the cheek. “We rushed yesterday so we might move at our own pace today, after all.”

RE: Mr & Mrs - Barnabas Skeeter - October 3, 2018

He smiled at her, feeling marginally better about the idea. It would be something that tomorrow Barney could deal with. Today Barney could relax and enjoy his new life with his bride. They could lay in bed all day if they wanted. Yes, that sounded exactly like what he wanted to do rather than go out and face his new in-laws. It was funny that he hadn't thought of them before. He didn't need to think of them now, he reminded himself. He just needed to think about himself and Maeve.

"Does that include..." He raised his brows suggestively and brushed his hand against her blanket-covered hip. It was morning after all.

RE: Mr & Mrs - Maeve Connolly - October 3, 2018

“It should be rather a wasted honeymoon otherwise,” Maeve remarked dryly.

RE: Mr & Mrs - Barnabas Skeeter - October 3, 2018

"Have I mentioned that you are the most amazing woman I have ever met?" He asked in earnest. He marveled at the softness of her form once again, worshiping it with his hands and mouth in the morning light. Yes, married life suited him immensely.
