Out of Bounds - Annora McKelvey - June 15, 2025

June 18th, 1895 - Croquet Tournament

Annie did not think it was a good idea for her to take up a croquet mallet. That sounded like an injury waiting to happen, given her recent track record at public events. No, today she would spectate and that would be plenty. So far everything seemed well-organized and even just watching was entertaining enough. There were clearly people who had played before and obviously some who hadn't, but she also thought it might be more a game of luck over skill? It was truly hard to tell. Perhaps strategy had a bigger part.

Having lost sight of Hanna already and Reed had gone off to get them refreshments, Annie was left alone in the stands for the moment. She had predicted a fine day for the afternoon and had come to ensure that the weather cooperated, but she didn't like the look of the clouds off in the distance. They seemed to be building up, but hopefully they would pass by without incident. Her readings of the barometric pressure over the last couple days did not indicate rain, so perhaps they were just accumulating. They weren't too dark yet, which was good.

In paying better attention to the clouds than the game before her, it was only the shout of someone nearby that got her attention; but soon enough, one of the croquet balls came flying in her direction and Annie did not have the reflexes to dodge it. She ducked a little, which saved her a bigger headache than she could have had, but the ball still clipped the side of her head, hitting her temple first and grazing backwards, which of course caused her to go down like a sack of potatoes.

A day out, they had said. Get you out of your funk and back into the land of the living. As though he did not have a single social engagement to his name and was the same sad sack he had been a year ago!

It was true that his revitalised outlook had been somewhat abbreviated by that old gem called Winter – a miserable time by anyone’s reckoning – but he was still upright, still treating his work life like it mattered again, and yet his so-called friends had seen fit to bring him to a croquet match. And not just a match, a tournament of the stupid game and he was determined to get to the end of it without relying on the refreshment tent overmuch.

As he edged towards said tent that held the distinct aroma of Pimm's and lemonade – which was basically just lemonade, wasn’t it? – he caught the movement out of the corner of his eye. Some reckless imbecile had hit their ball like the world was at stake and a young lady had fallen at his feet as a result.

“Have that man removed,” he said promptly to the nearest person in a voice that told them it was not a suggestion and that he had not risen to his position for nothing. The fact that he had fallen from said position was immaterial. Far more important was the young lady and Kons crouched down to check on her.

“Are you alright? Can you open your eyes for me?”

The darkness was a relief at first, but as she hazily came to, Annie realized just how much she would have preferred being unconscious. There was a splitting pain in her head now and as she gingerly reached up to where the ball had grazed her, she felt a little trickle of blood.

What was even worse was that she heard a very authoritative man giving directions and then Annie rather thought he was talking to her. It was hard to focus, but after a moment, her lashes fluttered open and she though her vision was bleary, the face looking down at her was very handsome. "Did you catch the color of the carriage that hit me?" She had to make a joke, otherwise she was going to burn up from embarrassment. Surely it looked awful to not only have the misfortune of getting hit, but to clumsily crumple into an inelegant pile of skirts on the ground was not ladylike.

Her voice sounded steady enough but her comment was a concern. Did she really think she had been hit by a carriage? She seemed to be smiling but it was hardly conclusive proof that her words were in jest.

There was only one thing for it.

“Please excuse me,” he said before promptly picking her up. The crown around him let out a small mutter at that, but they parted for him as he carried her inside the refreshment tent. “Everybody out, this young lady needs peace!” He barked as he settled her onto a chair and stalked around the tent briskly, encouraging people to leave and adding extra encouragement where they were reluctant.

Eventually he poured a glass of water and returned to the young miss, who didn’t seem to be out of her wits.

“I’m no healer, but I always find peace and quiet cures most ills. Here,” he handed her the water. “How are you feeling?”

Annie had been about to protest; her joke had fallen flat. She didn't have time to rectify the situation however, as she was unprepared for what happened next. She couldn't help the squeak of surprise that escaped as he effortlessly scooped her up from her position on the ground. He spoke and moved with such authority that all she could do was stay silent too, shrinking against him gratefully. Her cheeks were burning from embarrassment, but she sighed in relief as the refreshments tent slowly emptied.

Once in the chair, Annie blinked a couple of times, trying to ease the ringing in her ears. It all felt like a little too much— the injury, the embarrassment, the concern on the gentleman's face and in his gentle voice. She accepted the glass and took a small sip. "A little dizzy, but being out of the sun helps." The bright light was making her head hurt more.

"Thank you, for your help." She added, realizing she had yet to thank him through the haze.
