icy practices - James Callum - December 31, 2024

January 7, 1895 — Quidditch Pitch

The holidays were over, and classes were back in session. James had been glad for the chance to go home--as much as he enjoyed Hogwarts, there was no place like home--but being back had its upsides. Quidditch was one of them. He didn't get practice when he was at home, and more than anything, James missed flying. He didn't think he was going to try to play after graduation--at least he didn't plan to at the moment--but he was probably going to have to find an excuse to fly once he left school. It was just too fun.

"You live in Irvingly, right?" James asked Miss Gillenwater. They'd both apparently had the idea to come out to the pitch after classes finished for the day, braving the cold. "It must be hard to practice in the off-season."

Greta laughed. She couldn't help it. The idea of it being hard to practice was just so- well, funny. Ever since she'd gotten her letter and formally been inducted into witchy side of the family she'd pretty much been forced into constant practice with Cam, Maddy and Oak, as well as her stepfather. Off-season was such a foreign concept at this point... she was honestly convinced had she not found flying peaceful and relaxing in a way that being on the ground never was just the sheer amount of hours they'd forced her to be on a broom had made her the seeker she was today.

Then she remembered that James Callum was only a second year and hadn't really had the chance to experience her older siblings.

"I'm sorry James," She said and tried to look it. "Going home for me isn't really an off-season. My whole family is Quidditch mad. You probably don't remember them but Madeline Bell - she was the captain last year - she's my older sister and she's now becoming a professional Quidditch player just like our father, and Cameron, my older brother was captain before her and sometimes I swear Oak, he's my younger brother, has a bludger rattling between his ears instead of a brain. That's how much Quidditch talk comes out of his mouth. He still wont forgive me for making the team instead of him. It's pretty much practice practice practice there. It's almost calming to come back here."

"I take it it's not the same for you?" She asked genuinely curious. She felt sometimes that knew unfortunately little about lives of a lot of her fellow students beyond what her friends told her.

James' brow furrowed. He thought you couldn't do magic in Irvingly? Maybe it was different if it was on your own property, though. It wasn't like James went there enough to really know. He shrugged. Ah, well. "Nah," he answered. "I haven't got any siblings. And we live with my Gran, who's muggle and, you know--" James sighed dramatically "--[i]protective."
