An early start on Christmas day - Benedict Hunter - December 25, 2024

December 25th, 1894 - Bartonburg

It was seven in the morning when the Hunter family first began to rise from their beds. Victoria Hunter took it upon herself to knock on each door, in turn, to make sure her parents and brother had all gotten up promptly. Gifts were exchanged around a beautifully decorated tree in the corner of the room with Benedict receiving a leather-bound notebook from his sister, a new satchel from his mother and then a new suit and some games from his father. Everyone was quite enjoying themselves listening to the enchanted music box playing a series of carols in the room. For breakfast, his mother had made everyone their favourite plate and Benedict was enjoying a delightful spiced cinnamon roll as he thought on the rest of the day. The family goose had just gone in and in a couple of hours, the room would begin to fill with the most delicious smells.

Eight in the morning. Benedict looked at his pocket watch and then at the door that led out of the house. "I suppose you'll be off on your errand then? Make sure you take a coat, it's a fresh morning this Christmas." Elsbeth Hunter said to her son. He smiled and blushed a little before grabbing his coat and his small bundle of goods.

"Making deliveries on Christmas days little brother? Must be quite the customer? I hope they paid extra." came a teasing voice from over a slice of marmalade toast. "Behave yourself Tori" Benedict laughed back.

"I don't remember any deliveries today. Are you sure you should be going out" added a confused fatherly voice from behind a copy of the paper. "It's ok dear, he'll be back before we head out for carols."

Benedict grabbed his stuff and his cap and headed out. It was exquisitely cold today and the streets were very clear. In his arms, he held some Christmas Gladioli, a small pouch of chocolate and an illustrated copy of Reindeer Confessions a series of funny short stories by Harriet Wells. Benedict whistled a song as he walked and it didn't take him long to reach the customer's address.

The card on the little pile neatly arranged on the doorstep simply said "Miss Potts" he had no doubt that the intended recipient would identify herself immediately, but a little ambiguity was both fun and also might allow the easily rattled girl to suggest it be one her sister's callers if she so desired.

Benedict knocked on the door sharply three times then quickly vacated leaving his token to be found by whoever it may be before returning to his family to enjoy the rest of Christmas.

Millie Potts or perhaps Dorothea Potts ???
