ignorance is bliss and a marketable skill - Arabella Russell - September 2, 2024

September 2, 1894 — Iron Fang Inn
Hestia Philomena Sprout

Ara thought her greatest skill was knowing how to mind her own business. She was very good at not asking questions, which was a skill that she thought most people could appreciate, no matter what their intentions were. Either the people she did jobs for were on the up and up or they weren't. It was all the same to Ara if she didn't dig too deeply into it.

The path through Knockturn Alley to the Iron Fang was a familiar one, though early morning was an odd time to entering the inn. Still, she knew exactly where she was going, and walking confidently and with purpose often went a long way to people leaving you alone, most of the time. Ara made her way to Hestia's door and knocked, waiting to be acknowledged.

Riffling through papers had become a daily task that Hestia wasn’t sure she liked. That she’d been given this job was a godsend, and gave her more opportunities to provide for those she cared about; the downside being it was less-than-honest work, but needs must. However there were days when she wished she was just a barkeep again. This was such a day, given the fact that she hadn’t left her office in a few hours.

So the knock was a great reprieve, and she shot up from her seat, hurrying to get the door. “Oh Ara,” She smiled, opening the door. “Thanks for interrupting me, I was about to stab myself in the eye out of boredom.”

Ara smiled wryly. "Any time," she said as she entered the office. "Death by boredom is a serious matter. I'm surprised St. Mungo's isn't looking into the cure."

Taking a seat in a chair across from Hestia's desk, Ara leaned forward. "I was hoping you had work for me," she said. It seemed that she was in a constant state of chasing more money, which had ceased being a novel experience pretty quickly after she left home. Her family hadn't been members of the highest echelons of society or anything, but if she'd stayed she'd at least been reasonably comfortable. Or would have been married off to someone reasonably comfortable, maybe, by now.

Hestia’s brows darted towards her hairline at Ara’s words. They weren’t a surprise exactly, but there were a number of things that came to mind at the request, and Hestia now found herself in a position to try and wheedle out what lengths her friend was willing to go to. And what risks.

“What kind of work did you have in mind?” She countered easily, slipping back into her chair.

"Anything that needs doing is fine by me," Ara said with a shrug. She couldn't afford to be picky, anyway. "I could do with some extra money, so if you've got something I can do for you, I'd appreciate it."

The thing about Arabella was that Hestia recognized a kinship when she saw it. Or at least someone who was in a position that she had once been in. It wasn’t as if Hestia had much choice in anything when it came down to it. People like her and Ara, they were dealt their lot and had to deal with it. And she didn’t doubt that her friend wouldn’t complain whilst doing it. “We have someone coming in next week.” She responded. “He needs a little extra looking after — not in that way,” she added quickly. “In that he needs a sharp eye on him in case he tries to short change us. He’s been known to do that in the past.”

Hestia bit her bottom lip in thought as she leaned back in her chair. “It wouldn’t be too much of a leap for a maid-of-all-work to wait on him at his meals and make sure his room was tidy.”

"I can do that," Ara said. She wasn't above "looking after" people the other way, but it wasn't her particular favorite. Though, somehow, not her least favorite, either. So there was that. "Let me know when he's coming, and I'll be here to keep an eye on him."
