Introducing Themis;

In school, she was tenacious, friendly, intelligent, and consistently fair. While she had plenty of friends in Gryffindor, she is drawn to the bookish intellectuals. Themis would have seem slightly sheltered and bonded easily to older students. She didn't grow up around other children and often found 'kid things' exasperating. She's loved Astronomy her whole life and knew she wanted to be an astronomer by the time she reached Hogwarts. If you wanted to find her, she was in the Astronomy Tower. Themis would not have been involved in parties or anything she considered disrespectful to her house or to Hogwarts. Order and structure are nearly sacred to her. If you broke rules, you lost points. No exceptions. This led to more than a few angry encounters with her housemates. And did I mention that she has a near-pathological response to UCPB privilege? STUDENTS: Welcome to Astronomy class! You are here to learn. If you think it's time for a nap or an easy course, you are about to be sorely disappointed. Themis takes teaching and her role as an educator very seriously. She believes learning is fun and expects her students to engage appropriately. She expects active engagement and critical thinking. She is difficult to impress and has very high standards for her classroom. Foolishness will not be tolerated, and rules will be followed. The exception is curfew after her class. For very good reasons only™, she would allow late-night study sessions in the Tower. She does have a soft spot for her fellow night owls. She isn't heartless, though. Themis keeps a close watch on school gossip and prides herself on always knowing what is happening around the school. She will gladly hear out a student in need and would freely take on students for additional study. PROFESSIONAL CONNECTIONS: Themis began working as a professional astronomer with her uncle straight after Hogwarts. She is published in her field and loved her work. She traveled extensively to do research abroad between 1877-1881, both in America and in Europe. She started teaching at Hogwarts in the fall of 1888. To other professors, Themis is amiable until faced with irrational decisions. She will (and does) vocally challenge policies she thinks are unfair or irrational. Themis is a staunch feminist and anti-blood purist. She sees supporting her younger colleagues as a duty and will be the first person to speak up to defend others when needed. HURLS: "Romance is a fool's errand meant to trap women in a state where they believe their worth is dependent on man's protection," says Themis. I don't see flowers and heart candies in her future by any means. Themis was relieved to be widowed and staunchly refuses to even consider remarrying. That doesn't mean she is completely averse to connection. Themis is conventionally attractive and aware of the fact. She finds this more amusing than anything. Would she ever take a lover? Possibly. Would they be male? I have no idea. Themis is equally drawn to men and women, but she has never explored or given much thought to her sexual orientation. She is not above sexual attraction; it's just an unknown variable she sees little reason to solve. Themis has begun an affair with fellow professor Samuel Griffith. This affair is dramatically complicated by their relationship originating in dangerous magic and Themis falling in love with him. I did not see this coming. |

I have my students who'd be in her class--James Callum and Lucy Tatting. They're both pretty studious, though James is definitely that kid with undiagnosed ADHD who does not sit still. XD
Tangentially, I have Philomen Huxley, who is not himself a professional contact, but he comes from a family of astronomers, who she might have a professional relationship with?

I have Mason Skeeter Puff HoH and herbology professor! He's been there for ten years now, starting in the 83-84 school year, last year was his first year as HoH. He's usually pretty unflappable and available around the school. But you'll often find him in the greenhouses more than his inside office. I will have another Hogwarts contact after the AC too
I also have Ramona Pendergast coming in as a first year, she'll enjoy Astronomy immensely!
outside of Hogwarts I have Ziya Burroughs who was a year behind her in Ravenclaw, but generally pretty outgoing and social at the time! Sydney Podmore was also a year behind in Slytherin, same deal, though he was a bit of a dunderhead back in school lol.

In her NEWT class as of next year will be Benedict Hunter who us also one of the Gryffindor prefects. He is playful chap who likes to take school with a light heart but is also eager to please his professors and the other students around him.
Ignatius Prince is my professor so of course that is a professional connection for school too.

I have Gus here as a fellow professor, and he tends to get into trouble simply because of his own actions lol. He travelled around the world as curse breaker, albeit he left the year she returned. They could always bond over it.
Student wise, I think Cadogan Glynn might take her class.
Although a former student, I have Idris Oakby who is a feminist, so she might have latched onto Themis as a mentor while she attended Hogwarts.

Since Samuel and Themis are already getting reacquainted, I need not offer him to you here, but I have my freshly minted villain Alastair!
He is a UCPB Slytherin alumnus of 1871 and would have, in her final year of Hogwarts, started up a secret student fight club and acted as a general menace.
I am sure they would have been fast enemies in Hogwarts and would butt heads if they were to meet again! Threads in the past are, of course, also possible.
EDIT: also I feel like Themis and Elfrieda Yaxley, who probably desires to be widowed too, could be friends.

Themis is ready for James Callum. He and Themis have a similar family situation and she is well-practiced at handling the kiddo ADHD. I think James might remind her a bit of her son and that would totally work in his favor.
Lucy Tatting I don't think she'd have any reason to dislike, and she's very big on making sure young girls get a thorough education.
Philomen Huxley will be harder to thread come school, but maybe family connection?

Mason Skeeter Themis would love to know her other profs and HoH better! Mason is a level-headed enough guy that Themis would respect his opinion on things.
Ramona Pendergast Themis can't wait to meet her! I'm down for any and all student threads. Themis really, really likes teaching.
I can see her getting along with Ziya Burroughs especially. They are both widows and Themis isn't shy about how relieved she is by this. Themis may be a good, safe connection for Ziya. Sydney Podmore was a good enough student Themis probably tolerated him, but she has fewer Slytherin friends.

Ignatius Prince teaches one of her favorite disciplines, but she has big feelings about him being betrothed to a student. It could be interesting

Themis would find Gus Charming, if reckless. She absoultly doesn't understand curse breakers and their addiction to danger, but I'm sure she would find his stories amusing.
Themis wouldn't directly contradict parental orders, but she would be supportive of Idris Oakby and would happily stay in contact to help advise her.

Elfrieda Yaxley could be interesting. Themis has opinions on her infidelity, but she can't stand the idea that it ruins a woman and barely effects men. I'm not sure where they would run into each other, but I can see them having lots in common.
