Mrs. Evangeline Rowle vs. Miss Rowan Yaxley - Tybalt Kirke - April 14, 2024

27th April, 1894 — Hogsmeade Memorial Assembly Rooms, Duelling tournament
This was Tyb’s thing – his office was, after all, Responsible – so he had to be on his best behaviour here, demonstrate utmost professionalism.

That was – considerably more difficult to achieve when one of the women he was judging was a friend. He had been stifling the temptation to laugh for the last few minutes, so intently that it probably looked as if he were trying not to breathe. But he went through the rules (shooting Rowan a quick raised eyebrow, as if she might be inclined to break them) and then settled properly into the task at hand, which required perfect equality of judgement.

And perhaps a little optional amusement.

“Mrs. Rowle, whenever you’re ready.”

Oh, Evangeline loved a dueling tournament. Once upon a time, she wouldn't have been allowed to participate--even back in the days when ladies' duels could hardly be called as such.

She curtsied to Miss Yaxley, and then cast a stunning spell.

Dear god how had she ended up with Tyb as her judge? She was tempted to roll her eyes as he read the rules, and just managed to contain herself by counting her breaths; except by the end it looked like Tybalt had swallowed a fly and was about to choke on it. Her only indication that he was alright was that he quirked an eyebrow at her as if to say Behave yourself, to which her response was a mere pursing of her lips even though she was halfway to actually sticking her tongue out and blowing a raspberry at him.

She smiled kindly at Mrs. Rowle though, and returned her curtsey before preparing herself. Then she pointed her wand and cast a backfiring jinx.

Mrs. Rowle's spell was spectaluarly stunning indeed. By which he meant it had met Yaxley's charm and reversed course, hitting its caster squarely after all.

Tyb shot Rowan a mock-disapproving look as he re-awoke Mrs. Rowle. "The first point to Miss Yaxley," he awarded sombrely, "who may cast next."

Rowan wrinkled her nose at Tyb. What?! She'd gone easy on Mrs. Rowle, hadn't she? It wasn't her fault Mrs. Rowle's spell was well cast.

Sighing, this time she cast a disarming spell. Of course, if she lost this point, Tyb would give her grief for messing up a simple spell as that.

Oof. Well, that hadn't gone how she would have liked it to. Next, she cast the confundus charm.

Oh, well. Eesh. This time it was as if the Confundus charm had hit them both, and they had both lost their wits. Mrs. Rowle's wand merely twitched in her hand as if contemplating a drop to the floor and deciding against it; and Rowan looked so bewildered she may as well not have noticed it happen. Some good she would have done in a real duel. Tyb, with a grimace, cast a Finite and weighed up the results, finally giving Mrs. Rowle the point.

"Let's go for a tiebreaking round – Mrs. Rowle, if you please." Hopefully they would try and end on a high.

Well, that was embarrassing. Eva grimaced. It was probably best that she only did this as a hobby, and only on occasion.

Perhaps as a sign of her own frustration at herself, she cast a bat-bogey hex.

It wasn’t her first time being Confunded but she didn’t like experiencing it again. It made her feel as if her brain had just melted before solidifying. Thankfully Rowan was recovered in time to attempt conjure a wave of water and blast it towards Mrs. Rowle.

Mrs. Rowle redeemed herself with that – bat-like bogeys were swarming Rowan.

But Tybalt could not even properly enjoy the sight, because Miss Yaxley's blast of water had gone off-course (or had it?) and left him utterly, unspeakably, drenched. "The d-duel goes t-to Mrs. Rowle," he declared, his teeth chattering from the shock of it, and water droplets flying as he shook his head. "Congratulations."
