to spiral out, to try and float; to see a friend, to see a ghost - Noble Greengrass - November 15, 2023

November 4th, 1893 - Bartonburg
His body was in the workshop, but Noble, gloriously, wasn't — his spirit was floating around the pitch-dark yards of Bartonburg at one in the morning. He hadn't really had an aim for this little venture, just to try out the party drug he was going to try to create — but Merlin, he owed Tycho a favor for giving him spiritus sancti. Noble had not felt this confident in years.

If anyone asked him, he had not gone to this yard on purpose. He was trying to stay in a specific radius of the workshop, and he was trying to go places where he did not think he would be spotted. But later, he would not be able to tell whether or not he had decided to go here deliberately, or whether it just happened that their house was near his.

So Noble floated through the plants in the Potts' garden, knowing it was theirs, expecting to remain unseen.

@"Daffodil Potts"

She had been sleeping better. She had. It had been good for a while. What was different tonight, she didn't know. Maybe it was the fact that she was at her parents this evening and had stayed later than was necessary after dinner and didn't have her dreamless sleep potion, maybe it was Zinnia's tossing and turning in bed next to her, but Daff hadn't been able to fall asleep and had given up after a while.

At first she'd just gone downstairs to read, thought about just hopping in the floo and heading back to her flat. She had half a mind to head somewhere else, but didn't think a midnight intrusion to Elias' was a good idea. This was just a blip and she didn't want to worry him. If it kept up, she'd tell him. She would. She had promised. Zin too. It was why she'd snuggled into her sister's room tonight rather than head home. Something was up with her sister, but Daff couldn't put her finger on it, nor was she ready to ask yet either.

Daff wasn't sure what had pulled her out into the garden after midnight, but she'd been hoping the cold, fresh air would help calm her mind. Just a little walk around the garden. Wrapped in a heavy blanket and charmed to be warm, she stepped out into the garden proper and noticed something... someone? Hovering near the pond. Daff ventured out further, recognizing the opalescence of a ghost, wondering if they were perhaps lost. Or maybe she was hallucinating. One sleepless night usually didn't do that to her, but she could have sworn it was... "Noble?"

He ought to turn around. But something about his newfound confidence stopped him: surely, he would not get caught. It was nice to be in the Potts yard, too — he liked to look at their garden, which had to be the best in the neighborhood. Maybe he could float over the pond, too?

Noble was considering this when he saw Daffodil outside. Noble started and tried to float behind a tree, hoping that Daff would chalk seeing him up to her imagination.

And she was not supposed to be awake this late!

Maybe she was overtired. She'd been reading for too long. It was too late. She should try to go back to bed, but as the entity floated over toward the tree by the pond, she couldn't help but to curiously follow. Certainly she must be dreaming this up. As far as she knew, Noble was definitely not a ghost. The Harvest Festival wasn't that long ago and Fortitude looked perfectly fine as well. She would have heard about it right..?

Shivering despite the warming charm on her blanket, Daff crept toward the tree. "Hello?" She tried; the ghostly glow was unmistakable, but now she was invested in making sure she wasn't going insane.

She'd noticed him. Noble considered trying to hide, or float further backwards. But what was the harm? He came forwards, through the tree — and held his hands out in a greeting of surrender.

"You've got me," Noble said. Now what would she do? The recklessness was still a thrill — he had no idea what Daff would think of this.

He came through the tree. Through the tree. "Noble, what have you done?" She hissed, the darkness and the quiet all around them the only thing keeping her from actually raising her voice as the panic bubble up. Surely this was some joke. The spectral version of her old love floating in front of her was not something Daffy was prepared to handle. "Are you, you..?" She couldn't bring herself to say the word dead. Couldn't fathom. They may no longer be anything to one another, but he couldn't be gone.

If he'd thought this through, he would have expected her reaction — Noble shook his head fervently at her. "Not dead," he said, swiftly and emphatically. "It's, um — did you hear about spiritus sancti?" She had not liked when he tested potions on himself; he doubted that she was going to like this. But at least he wasn't dead.

Relief swept through her until it was replaced entirely by an undeniable disbelief. And anger. Daff was not often angry, in fact she wasn't sure she'd ever been quite this riled up, but how could he be so stupid?

"Not dead," her hands were shaking under the blanket she had pulled tightly around her. "Just some approximation of it." The fact that she'd started to tear up was beside the point. The fact that it sounded like he was screwing around with testing potions on himself again was not lost on her either. Hadn't he learned from last time? Clearly he didn't care what anyone else thought; anyone who cared about him, that was.

Her voice was deadly quiet, even. "I sure haven't. Show me." She demanded. Never mind it was the middle of the night, or that she was in her nightgown and slippers. Daff wouldn't be able to breathe until she saw he was physically alright.

She was furious. She'd been pretty furious with him the last time they'd actually talked, too — (he didn't count the time she'd passed out.) So they had last actually spoken over a year ago, and they'd been so close for so long, and he did not love her anymore but it was nice to actually engage with her, even if she was furious.

Noble shook his head at her again. "The rest of me is — back at the workshop," he said. And he certainly did not want Daff meeting his cousin under these circumstances (or probably any.) "But — you know how regular ghosts just float through you? I wouldn't." He didn't know much about spiritus sancti, but he had been told that he could touch people while he took it — he just hadn't expected to run into anyone tonight.

"The rest of you? The rest of you. Do you hear yourself?" The astonishment was clear on her face and she was not backing down. "Show me. Or shall I go knock on the door and ask Fortitude or Clementine to let me in?" Daff was under no uncertain circumstances fooling around about this. The fury was bubbling under the surface and if she wasn't trying to keep him from seeing the fact that she was practically vibrating in anger, she would have put her hands on her hips in her best impression of her mother.

"Daff, no," Noble said, floating closer to her. (He hadn't mastered floating — he kept moving his legs as if he was trying to take steps. Maybe next time he'd do better at it.) "It's normal. It's a party potion, everyone's doing it," he said. Just because Daff didn't run in those circles didn't mean he couldn't try to!

"Normal? What some kind of potion that separates your soul from your body? How is that normal? Even in magical circumstances!?" It was taking all of her willpower not to shout at him in the peaceful quiet of the garden. "What happens if it's permanent? What happens when something goes wrong or heaven forbid it's brewed incorrectly? You of all people know how easily that can happen." The lecture came too easily. The Noble she knew, the one she had loved once, would never be so reckless as to go this far. Reckless had been secret meetups and stolen kisses in the greenhouse, not becoming a ghost on purpose!

"Noble, I swear, I am not above waking up your entire house to let them know just how big of an idiot you are being." Daff no longer had to hold her tongue where he was concerned.

Noble wanted badly to roll his eyes at her. If the Upper Class was taking it, it was probably safe — and he could probably make a lot of money by selling it. (He knew better than to explain that to her.) And what right did Daffodil have to tell his family what he was up to, to interfere, anything?

"Enough, Daff," Noble said. He reached to clasp her upper arms with his hands — and as soon as he made contact, he audibly gasped at the rush of pleasure that ran through him.

"No, no, you don't get to tell me enou-" Her continued lecture about his idiocy was cut short as soon as his hands closed around her arms. Daff didn't know exactly how to describe the rush that crashed over her, but she certainly hadn't expected Noble's touch to ever make her feel that way again.

Her audible gasp mirrored his own and she looked at him with wide, uncertain eyes. "Let go." She stammered, heart pounding as she felt the desire swell in her chest.

If he was embodied right now, Noble would have been hard. (Hopefully he — was not currently hard, a few blocks away, in his workshop with his cousin.) He released Daft's arms as she demanded, but did not float back, too visibly shocked by how good that had just felt. "Did you feel that?" he asked.

The sensation had left her breathless, and she bit her lip in an effort to rid herself of the fire crawling across her skin. Even after he let go she could still feel the goosebumps and the leftover arousal swimming in her blood.

And then very suddenly how wrong it felt; it had her stepping back away from him, shaking her head uncertainly.

"You should go." Daff had lost the fight in her as soon as he'd touched her. "And I think you need to realize that your family deserves better than this." She really couldn't tell him what do to anymore. Daff wouldn't say anything to his brother, she didn't know Ford well enough to go snitching, but she had to at least try to impress upon Noble how reckless and dangerous he was acting.
