Angsty ice queen - Declan Wood - February 12, 2018

February 12th, 1888 — The Leaky Cauldron

Following the letter he'd received that morning, he'd been tempted to toss it into the fire and pretend as if he hadn't seen it. His mother had convinced him - in her soft, stern but loving way, that they would just send more. What did he think he was going to do anyhow? Show up at Chudley's practices and just keep on going as he had until someone confronted him? It'd be more embarrassing than just showing up at the Howlers' stomping grounds and fading into the new team with as little notice as possible. She'd even gone so far as to convince him that he these things happened just because - that it was of no fault of his own that he'd been traded down to a much lesser skilled team. Right. It hadn't been his fault that he'd missed all bloody seven of his goal attempts in the finals against Puddlemere.

There had only been so much tutting and sympathetic sighs that he could handle before he had to get out of the family home. He had planned on going to the Hog's Head, but even that didn't seem far enough away from all of the looks~ he knew he'd be getting. Surely the news was out by now — anyone who followed quidditch would know he'd been traded. Or dropped, more like, and promptly picked up by the howlers in an attempt to better their miserable team.

Besides, he had to hand in his broomstick. He'd borrowed it from the team and now it was no longer his. He stop in at the Leaky Cauldron for a strong drink before he'd turn it in. With only floo or broom as a means of travel, he chose to get one last, decent use out of his the broomstick before he'd have to say goodbye to it. It was not a smart choice, considering the time of year and how high he had to fly in order to avoid being seen by muggles.

Shivering, wet, and with icicles clinging to his disheveled hair, he sidled inside the warm pub, equally iced broomstick in hand. Declan avoided the gaze of several men that he recognized as quidditch deep-pockets. He ducked his head as he passed by a crowded table, only to be halted by a screech of surprise by someone he'd brushed by. He'd not paid attention to how close the fire had been to his ice crown - science had aligned just right so that several of his icicles slipped from his hair and tumbled into the clothing of the person sat below him.

It was a normal day in the pub; positively dull and busy at the same time and soul-crushing as always. Leeny was busting ass all around the place as she waited tables and getting no help as usual. Needless to say she was feeling surly as per the usual.

With plates balanced in one hand and a full pint in the other, Leeny scooted around a large table of men in the middle of the room to drop off the pint and just outside of the reach of any of them; they'd been rather handsy today and she was just about sick of it. She was tiny, but feisty and she really didn't want to get canned today because she had to sucker punch a grabby-hands idiot on his fourth pint. It really wasn't how she wanted to go out today.

Setting the dirty plates down in the bin next to the bar, Eileen turned around to survey the room at large, wondering what it was next that she needed to do when she saw she was being summoned by that same table again. She rolled her eyes so hard they nearly fell out. As she approached this time, still leery, she heard somebody yelp like a little girl. One of the larger gents at the table was nearly jumping out of his chair after a couple icicles fell off a kid's broom into his lap causing Leeny to roar with laughter.

"Serves you right you lecherous buffoon, squealing like a wee lassie at a little cold." Eileen cleared a few plates and slapped a hand reaching for her behind. "You touch me one more time and I'll have you squealing like your mate over there." Her sly grin was very much a warning to keep the same effect at her words.

and then Declan fell hopelessly in love with the feisty Irish waitress and they lived happily ever after the end

The waitress' response made him snort. She was tiny and he hadn't even seen her approach originally, but with a bin of dirty dishes in her hands and an attitude that reminded him very much of a bull dog, he didn't know how he'd missed her. He had half a mind to knock the man who'd gone for a grab over the head with his broomstick, frozen and all. Fortunately, living with his mother and his five sisters had taught him a thing or two about women. Especially the independent kind. This one had independent written all over her. She'd just as soon smack him for trying to "defend her honor" as she would the man actually doing the groping. Nah, he'd let her handle it. She was doing just fine as it was. (If he was being honest, he found her slightly intimidating.)

He raised his voice over the din of the pub and the guffaws and protests of the men at the table, "Got a free table anywhere? Need room for this-" He lifted the broom a bit for emphasis. A bit clunky to carry around, brooms were. "-and I-" The sound of sizzling caught his attention. A glance toward the sound revealed that his broom lift had stuck the end of the broom - the bit with the flammable, unpolished ends - directly into the fire. "Fuck!" He yelped and lurched as far from the fire as possible, tripping over a man at the table and falling in a heap with smoldering broomstick and a pair of drunk men in tow.

Eileen watched the subsequent kerfuffle in slow motion; there was nothing she could do to stop it. There was a heap on the floor and she had a slight fear that there would be fisticuffs if she didn't smoothe it over or kick them out... Acutally the latter was rather pleasing to think of. Everybody was getting up, except for the poor lad with the broom and they all looked around as if they'd already been punched.

"Ah, ah." Eileen warned with a stern look on her already sour face. "I'll be having none of that in my pub, thank yeh very much, you can be on your way-" The looked at her like she had three heads and though Leeny was not very tall, she was feisty. One of the men lurched for her, whether out of annoyance or because of the drink and Eileen easily sidestepped the assault and with her free hand brought a dirty plate crashing down on the man's head as he landed with a thud on the floor. Another of his buddies started her direction, but by then she had her wand in hand and had charmed the rest of the dishes to be poised to fly. "Out of my bar, don't come back until yeh've learnt your manners." One of the men who'd had the least to drink, started to round them up toward the door while the dolt on the floor managed to sit up and rouse his sensibilities.

Leeny set the dishes back into the bin and eyed the poor babe on the floor. "Come on yeh poor wee lamb, let's get you a drink." His broomstick was smoking; that certainly couldn't be good.

His jaw dropped in astonishment as he watched the rest of the events unfold. She'd dispatched a group of drunken men
so easily that it was evident this wasn't the first — and likely not the last — time she'd done it. He found it mostly impressive, slightly terrifying and vaguely alluring. When she addressed him, an awkward lump formed in his throat. His face reddened and the tips of his ears burned.

Declan hadn't even been aware that he was still on the floor, clutching the broomstick for dear life, until she'd addressed him. He swallowed a few times before he could answer. Self-conscious that he resembled a gulping fish, he scrambled to his feet and meekly followed her, "Er.. sorry abou' that. Been havin' a bit of a week."

Eileen moved to carry about her business as usual, keeping an eye on the group shuffling their way out of the bar. They would no doubt be back and up to their old shenanigans in a week's time, but at least she wouldn't have to deal with them for the rest of today.

"Happens to the best of us. What'll it be?" She set the big of dishes down to go into the back to be washed and moved behind the bar nearby, searching out her trusty box so she could reach things. The bartender as usual, was nowhere to be found, so Leeny had little issue hopping right back there herself, though she couldn't reach much without the box.

Though she wasn't exactly fond of her job, Eileen supposed it could be worse. She would make a terrible seamstress, though she could always become a laundress again, at least this kept her on her toes. It wasn't exactly boring, that was for sure and she met a lot of interesting people, like the poor lad in front of her with his sad eyes and burnt broomstick.

He settled himself at the bar, propping the broomstick against it nearest him. The Leaky Cauldron wasn't nearly as shady of an establishment as the Hog's Head, but he wasn't about to relax and trust it's clientele not to steal a broomstick when his attention was elsewhere. He could only imagine the sort of trouble he'd get into if he not only didn't show up to the meeting, but also admitted that he was no longer in possession of the broomstick he was meant to return.

"A beer, if ya please," He propped his elbow up on the bar and dropped his head to his hand, running his fingers through his wet mop of hair, "Make it two." Thankfully, the beer the LC served wasn't especially potent. He could consume four to five before his flying might be impaired, and even then it was minimal. He'd been drinking since before he could read. It wasn't much of a stretch to say that he'd built up his tolerance level.

"Ale it is, and yeh can have one at a time." She moved her box to reach a stein and then poured a pint for the lad just as she heard her name called from the back. Eileen swore at the cook in Gaelic, followed by a laugh and hopped off her box to take care of that business. She wasn't technically supposed to be behind the bar, but their damn barkeep was always wandering off to have a smoke or whatever else it was he got up to, so she tended to just do for herself, rather than wait for assistance.

Leeny snagged the food with ease and shuffled off to the table to drop off. The Cauldron wasn't exactly known for it's good food, but it was good enough to keep people coming in, which was all that mattered. Flitting about the room, Leeny checked in on her other tables before making her way back round to the bar. "Feeling better?" Eileen was a whiskey drinker, but to each their own!

RE: Angsty ice queen - Declan Wood - March 30, 2018

Declan sipped at his pint as he thawed out. He had little else to do aside from watch the people inside. There was no one else at the bar currently and those seated at the table nearest him didn't seem to be very conversational. He tried not to stare, but the waitress was feisty and filled with a confidence that made her seem so much bigger than she actually was. It was interesting, to say the least. She was one of the shortest women he'd ever met, which made him wonder if she was in fact, of goblin decent. Distantly, of course, as she lacked the ugly, pointed features most of those with mixed blood possessed.

When she returned to check on him, he was thoroughly warm as well as intrigued, "A bit. I'll have another, when ya have the chance." He hesitated for just a moment before adding conversationally, "So how long have you worked here? You look like you run the place."

RE: Angsty ice queen - Eileen Buchanan - May 2, 2018

"Longer than I would like, but nigh six years now." Eileen had already moved to pour his request seeing his first low already. A glamorous job it was not, but the pay was usually worth it, even if the clientele was not. "Only got my through my OWLs at school, so options were limited." And Eileen was not cut out to be a mediwitch or anything of that nature. She could have kept going in the laundress business, but then again, that wasn't all that fun either. At least this way she got to interact with people on a daily basis.

"I find it's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission. I won't cater to idiots and there are plenty that walk through here. No sense in letting them get the best of yeh." Eileen had always had a... dominant personalty, or so she'd been told. Always trying to make up for her small stature maybe, but she just wasn't built to be one of those tiny little meek women who just skirted around the edges of life. Eileen liked to strut, and drink whiskey and throw boots when she wanted! "Quidditch?" She asked as she nodded toward the broom, turning the question back around on him as she slid his ale toward him.

RE: Angsty ice queen - Declan Wood - May 8, 2018

"Yeah," He glanced toward the burnt broom before returning his attention to the tiny barkeep, "Got my OWLs as well an' then I was taken in by the Cannons. Had a rough year this las' time though — ya've heard what happened in the finals?"

Declan would assume that even if she hadn't been a quidditch fan that she would have heard of the nasty ending against Puddlemere - and that the loss had been substantial... and humiliating, particularly for the chaser that had missed seven goals...

He didn't exactly want to explain to her what had happened with the whole team switch, but there was just something about barkeeps that made you want to tell them your life story. Maybe it was the physical barrier of the bar between them. It could have been the environment and the noisy customers around - nobody would hear and it offered a fake sense of privacy. Probably it was just because he was two glasses in and though he wouldn't admit it, he was a light weight. Already he could feel a lightness to his head.

RE: Angsty ice queen - Eileen Buchanan - May 23, 2018

Leeny nodded in solidarity about OWLs. At least the lad had jumped right into quidditch, though Leeny had never really thought that to be a  great career choice for people of her station, she supposed some gents really did well with it. Esteban seemed to really enjoy it and everything that went along with it.

"Ach, aye." Her personal interest in quidditch was low, very low. When Esteban started in on it, she started to tune out rather quickly. "I'm not much of a fan myself, but mostly because I don't have time. A mate plays for Puddlemere though, so yeh, I heard." It was hard not to, with everybody coming through the pub itself and then of course, Esteban.

"There's always next season, yeh look young enough to have a few years yet in the sport." He looked like a wee babe to Leeny, but she had never exactly been the best at judging age.

RE: Angsty ice queen - Declan Wood - June 4, 2018

He ducked his head and scrunched his nose, "Eh, I hope so. Dunno how long they're gonna want t'keep me if I keep goin' this way." Declan thought it a bit odd that she spoke as if she were decades older than he - she hardly looked it. He'd have placed a bet she was fairly close to his own age, if she hadn't mentioned her OWLs. He'd have at least seen her around Hogwarts, which meant that they were a few years apart, at least.

"What keeps ya so busy? This?" He waved his arm to signify the pub. If quidditch fell through for him, he supposed he could always do whatever it was she did - at least he'd be so occupied he wouldn't have time to feel sorry for himself.

RE: Angsty ice queen - Eileen Buchanan - June 4, 2018

Aww the poor lamb, he looked so dejected. "Well, if yeh give up yeh'll ne'er know." She pointed out as she wiped down a spill on the bar. He may not have been that much younger than Eileen herself, she didn't know, but that baby face gave her the distinct impression he was barely out of Hogwarts.

What kept her busy? Bullshit that's what kept her busy, but nothing she could share too much about. "Oh a lot of this," She mimicked his sweep of the room. Eileen worked a lot to make ends meet and to be able to help send money home to her family.

"A little bit of that. A large group of very politically-minded friends and all their nonsense." A werewolf roommate made for extra responsibility; keeping up with Jude and all his social quests could be considered a full-time job; if she cared enough to really pay a lot of attention. Which she didn't. Mostly she was just there to make sure Kieran didn't get himself killed. That was also close to a full-time job.

RE: Angsty ice queen - Declan Wood - June 20, 2018

Though she meant well, her encouragement fell on deaf ears. He was a realist through and through --- he knew what his future would likely be like if he continued to fail. "I wager you're not much of the politically-minded sort?" He asked. The way she had phrased it made it sound like she excluded herself from the group.

RE: Angsty ice queen - Eileen Buchanan - June 22, 2018

Eileen chuckled to herself. "Ach nay, I'm simply adjacent and there to make sure the lot of them don't get themselves in too much trouble." There were a lot of egos and ideas amongst her friends, there was no telling what kind of crazy schemes and ideas they could cook up in an afternoon. "Wouldn't change them for the world though." She may not have been quite as outspoken about some of their causes, but she did appreciate the work they did and what they put into it. She helped out when she could with what she could, but sometimes she just couldn't keep up.

"Anything else to drink, love?" She motioned to his drink, starting the other way so she could go take care of somebody else before they got their knickers in a twist.
