Matchmaker, Matchmaker, Make Me a Match - Benjamin Woodcroft - September 13, 2023

13th September 1893

To: Spinster
I am a working gentleman and you sound like a lovely potential match — I am overly-serious, but kind, and take my work seriously. I believe that you could lighten my heart and that I have a devoted romantic heart to offer to you.

Sincerely,
R.G.

Dear R.G.,

You did say serious twice in your letter, so I can certainly agree that is much too serious for me. But I really am pleased that you wrote. You wouldn’t believe the anticipation of having submitted it – I think the worst fear I had would be to end up getting no responses at all! Then I would truly feel a lost cause, and would have had to given up hope completely.

So thank you for sparing a moment to write. It means a lot. If it were not too bold to ask, I would wonder where you worked – but instead I will ask whether you enjoy your work? I truly enjoy mine... but is there any room left for enjoyment, if you take it so seriously? I’m sorry, that was not serious either.

Yours, perhaps,
A. R.

Seeing the name on the envelope, and assuming it must be a response to Witch Weekly, Benji dropped the letter unopened on Rhys Gallagher's desk when he was alone in the constabulary with Dorset. This would be fun.

A.R.,

I apologize in advance for my complete lack of understanding here. Your letter was mixed into some paperwork on my desk and I am afraid I do not know of its origin. I fear it was not intended for me originally, however it did have my initials on it, so I am a bit befuddled.

My work, as you mentioned, is to figure out the unsolved, but I was hoping perhaps you could clue me in instead? I would appreciate any direction you could give me.
Sincerely,
R. Gallagher

Dear Mr. Gallagher,

I’m terribly sorry for the mix up. You – or someone – replied to my Lonely Hearts advertisement in the latest Witch Weekly. I’ve sent along the letter I received, in hope this will help you solve who – though please do forget anything I previously wrote. It sounds like it was all a great mistake.

Sorry to bother you.

Sent back with the original reply and, accidentally, the WW letter addressed to Gus also enclosed.
