the sky is set to burst - Dorian Fisk - August 29, 2023

August 29th, 1893 Mdash; North Bartonburg, Hogsmeade
Bronwyn Moony
Nearly a month in their new flat and Dory still wasn't quite used to the changes. He liked having her nearer, that much he knew, but there was a distance that remained that he couldn't quite name. (Or, he could have if he allowed himself to consider their last serious conversation for more than a few minutes, but Dory was adamantly ignoring the way they left that night.) Dory was likely trying too hard now, as he always ensured to check in on whether or not she needed space or if the furnishings were to her liking. But, he wanted her to be happy.

He needed her to be happy.

It was with that thought in mind that he picked up a small bouquet of flowers (one that could be easily disguised as a simple desire to spruce his place up) and her favorite dinner from the pub on his way home. One of her clients had gone into labor nearly two days before and, last he heard, the babe had yet to be delivered. Winnie would be exhausted when she finally made it home, in need of a good meal and rest. Having her meal arranged for her, her bedroom warmed with a fire, and a stiff glass of whiskey already poured, was the least he could do for her. Especially after all the changes she'd made for him.

After charming the meal to stay warm, Dory retrieved his latest adventure novel and leaned back on the arm chair to wait for her.

Winnie had lost track of the hours at some point, having hardly slept or eaten for the last two days, she felt like she was walking in a trance. It had been a long and difficult labor for the poor mother, a breech birth that had needed Winnie's life-saving intervention near the end, but both mother and babe seemed to be doing as well as expected. Exhausted obviously, but the infant was eating already and Winnie could not find any after effects from the birth, even if she had been extremely concerned about losing one or both of them over the past forty-eight hours or so.

Exhausted, frazzled and covered in blood, she finally stepped into the fireplace to head home. She had half a mind to go back to her flat, the one she shared with Ivy, because she felt gross and just wanted to take a long hot bath and go straight to bed, but she knew if she stayed away too long, Dory would start to worry.

Trudging out of the fireplace, she let her carpet bag fall to the floor with a loud thump next to the hearth and finally felt the full weight of the exhaustion creeping over her. "I am disgusting and I need a bath," She announced with a heavy sigh, toeing off her shoes. That she could smell some sort of meal in the air or that Dory was just sitting there nonchalantly reading hadn't really caught up with her yet, but it would.

Dory was so deeply absorbed into his detective story that when the fireplace finally roared with life he just about jumped out of his skin. He did, however, immediately close it and moved to his feet to briefly embrace her. (She was right - she was in need of a bath.) "I had a feeling." He answered with a short chuckle as he stepped back to allow her space.

"I have dinner for you too once you're out. Did the mother pull through alright?"

Astounded Dory still went in for a hug, she squeezed him briefly, gratefully, before she started to peel the clothes from her body. They would also need a good soak, after she had one. "Bless you," she smiled, wondering if she could have both at the same time.

"Loosen me up?" Her corset was painfully digging into her ribs at this point and she could do without it altogether. The hooks on the front would come loose easier if the laces were at least a little undone. "The babe looks to be alright, breech, was close. I'm less certain about the mother, it was a lot of blood loss." She would go back tomorrow to check in. Sighing softly as she felt like she could finally breathe, both physically and metaphorically, she started toward the washroom.

With a flick of her wand, the hot water started to pour into the tub and Winnie continued to strip. "Can I trouble you for that snack? I'm starving." Win cast a look over her shoulder at him as she rolled her head and shoulders around to ease some of the tension from her muscles.

"I hope she'll be alright." Dory murmured as he helped her undress. He'd undressed her countless times over the years, but his actions were not usually this selfless. There was usually a heavier passion involved, a fire threatening to set them both ablaze with desire. This, though, was soft and considerate, much like how he imagined a husband would act towards his tired wife.

(Not that they were married or ever would be, but perhaps, just this once, he could pretend.)

With her ties undone, Dory then moved to her hair and began removing the pins and ribbons holding it from her face. "Yeah, not a problem. I'll go get it as you get in." He placed a kiss atop her head and stepped back to allow her space.

Winnie could only hum out a quiet agreement as she moved from the hooks on her corset, discarding it to the floor, to the ties of her skirts. She tried to keep her head still while Dory pulled the few pins in her hair out. Everything fell to the floor piece by piece before she reached over and added a little rose oil to the bath. Steam filled the little washroom and now the sweet scent followed.

Win turned around to press a soft kiss to his cheek. "I'll be human in thirty minutes, promise." She just needed to not be upright or making decisions for a little while. She stepped into the tub and sank into the warm water gratefully, an audible sigh of relief escaping her lips as she felt the temperature sink into her skin. "Sweet Merlin's beard, that's magical." She chuckled, rolling her head to one side to look at him. "You can join me if you want." There wasn't a need to be alone, like she expected. Normally she wanted nobody to talk to her for the next twelve hours, but she hadn't seen him in a couple days and she wouldn't mind his company.

Dory had been prepared to make a quick retreat once she was settled. He'd known her long enough now to understand her need to recover after assisting with a difficult labor. It was always after she had enough time to rest and reset her mind that she was willing to share space again. And so for her to ask him to join her felt like a step in a new direction. A promise of potential.

"Yeah, sure." Dory nodded. He didn't typically enjoy bathing so late in the evening, but if it meant spending time with her he wasn't about to pass it up. "Do you want some time first or-?"

Winnie wrapped her fingers around the side of the tub and rested her chin on them. Her wet hair curled around her face and she tossed it over her shoulder impatiently. "Snacks first." She reminded him. The competing needs of being fed and rested warred with her desire to just simply be, but she wouldn't last much longer if she didn't eat something.

The warm bath water was already doing wonders for her tired, sore body, the muscles relaxing beneath the surface. It was harder to let her mind rest. She didn't have high hopes for the woman she had just left and would be some level of worried for the next twenty-four hours, she expected. The staff at the house had been instructed to call a healer if the mother worsened. There was little Winnie could do once the babe was delivered. Normally she was just available afterward to help with nursing and acclimating to having a newborn. Beyond that she was not trained in too many life-saving methods, not that she hoped they would be needed here.

"I'm alright," she assured him. "I could use the company." And the distraction. Plus she had missed him.

Snacks, right. Dory quickly ran through his mental inventory of the food presently in the house for ideas of what to bring her. The meal sitting warm on the table was too messy to eat in the tub, not to mention that it was a meal and she had specifically asked for snacks. They had some fruit - clementines, he thought - and nuts at least. There was also some cheese that might still be alright.

Stepping towards the edge of the tub, Dory stooped to kiss the top of her wet head and smiled. "I'll be right back with them." It wouldn't take him long, or so he hoped.

In the end, it took him no time at all to assemble the tray of fruit, nuts and cheese for her. He also remembered to grab her glass of whiskey before heading back to her. "I hope you haven't perished in the few minutes I was gone," he teased lightly. Once he handed over the tray Dory began to work on removing his clothes. "Do you have any other clients due soon or will you be able to rest for a day or two?"

In Dory's absence, Winnie submerged herself below the water's surface to reset herself. The absolute quiet, the warmth, lulled her into some semblance of normalcy, at least for a few minutes. Only a good night's sleep would really put her to rights, but this would do for now. As she sat back up, she wiped the water from her face and ruffled her hair back into its normal shape.

"Have I told you lately that I love you?" Because she did, at the very root of it, that wasn't the debate, she loved him deeply, but still worried it wouldn't be enough in the long run. She didn't have the headspace for that tonight however, and so as he put the snacks within reach, she took the tray and subsequently anything that would fit in her mouth. She washed it down with a swig of whiskey and then summoned the nearby stool to put it all on.

Another audible sigh echoed in the washroom as she sank back against the tub, whiskey in hand and a satisfied smile on her lips. "I should be alright, but I should also check in tomorrow." In the early afternoon. After she'd slept for a solid twelve hours.

"I can always stand to hear it again," he teased as he removed his last layers and tapped her shoulders for her to inch forward. There was plenty of room to sit opposite her too, but he missed having her near these last few days. Even if they still went separate bedrooms after this Dory would be content to have sat with her for a short while.

Once in the tub, Dory sighed at the warm water and ran his hands gently down her arms. "I'll be sure to be quiet in the morning." He usually was, especially when he knew she was still sleeping, but he made the promise all the same. "Think you'll be home for dinner tomorrow?"

RE: the sky is set to burst - Bronwyn Moony - October 23, 2023

Win already felt better, the hot water seeping into her sore muscles. She was so absolutely exhausted, but needed to fill her metaphorical cup before crashing. Allowing for Dory to slide into the tub behind her, she eased back against him, leaning all of it way back, resting her feet on one shoulder.

"I'm sure I can sleep through anything tonight," she assured him with a laugh. Winnie reached for the whiskeys, pissing him his before settling back again. She took another long sip and couldn't help the appreciative sigh that escaped.

"I should be, I don't have any appointments tomorrow outside of checking back on that mother." She'd done some quick rearranging of her schedule yesterday during a lull.

Lolling her head toward him, she kissed his cheek. "How have your last couple days been?"

RE: the sky is set to burst - Dorian Fisk - October 27, 2023

"I'd imagine so," he chuckled. Dory had had his fair share of rough times over the course of his career that prevented him from resting for long, but rarely as long as Winnie had experienced these past few days. Even if she could sleep through whatever noises he made whilst getting ready for work, Dory still thought it wise to be as quiet as possible. If only so that she'd provide the same consideration if the situation were reversed. Because, unlike Winnie, Dory wasn't capable of sleeping through much regardless of how tired he was.

He continued massaging her arms and shoulders, taking care to linger on any spots he felt a knot. "My days were quiet. Hatchitt assigned one of the new guys to be on call so there wasn't much action to be had." Truthfully, Dory felt incredibly bored in his career these days. There were the exciting cases, of course, but so much of what he did was assisting young children's accidental bursts and it had long since become more rote than it once was. "I'm hoping something happens up at the farm with the equipment so I can get out of the office for a bit." It'd been years since they had any major catastrophe with their farmer inventor, and still Dory remained hopeful he might get a creative streak once more.

RE: the sky is set to burst - Bronwyn Moony - October 27, 2023

Though she had never envisioned this for herself and she had told him as much, Win secretly did sort of like these cozy nights in at the end of a long day (or days in this case), just relaxing and spending time together. It was easy to get comfortable, especially with Dory and it had her questioning what about this she couldn't grow to love, but she just knew that a marriage would never be quite this easy.

Still, even if her mind kept wandering there, she tried to shove away the thoughts and stay present. "Farm equipment," she snorted. His boss had wound up in the hospital for quite some time because of that, if she remembered right. She did not need that added to her plate. She worried about him enough as it was. "Time for a change?" Maybe he could switch departments and try something else? Win wasn't exactly sure how moving about laterally in the ministry went.

"Just stay in one piece, please." Win requested, wincing as he hit a particularly tough spot in her shoulder. "I feel as though I've been hit by a carriage." She sighed, wishing she could just sink into him and pass out.

Dory shook his head. Starting over in a new department was a miserable prospect, and one he'd ignore for as long as humanly possible. Ideally, Hatchitt would be promoted soon and then Dory could step up into the squadron leader role (and then be granted the ability to assign himself only the interesting cases) but there'd been no mention of any such moves happening.

"I'm too old to start over." Dory explained as he kneaded the spot that had made her wince. "It's just a slump. I'll be content again soon." Hopefully that same feeling would spread into the other aspects of his life, too, and Dory wouldn't continue to be haunted by the ring in his dresser drawer. "No promises on not getting hurt, you never know what those kids will do. You, on the other hand, need to stop working yourself into the ground."

RE: the sky is set to burst - Bronwyn Moony - November 2, 2023

Winnie would have shrugged, if she had the range of motion at the moment so all she did was nod. She wasn't so sure it would be terrible for him to try something else, if that's what he was feeling, but she also was not in place to argue it with him either. Just because she couldn't handle being bored, at all, didn't mean he had to uproot everything and try something else.

"I'm sure you'll figure it out," likely without her help. "No can do, so many babies, so little time." She nearly said something about needing the income, which clearly she did, but she also wanted it. Winnie had been independent her entire adult life, so she couldn't just quit that. She didn't want him to try and reason that she didn't need it, under certain circumstances. It might not have even crossed his mind, but she didn't want to find out either. "Hopefully it'll hit a more reasonable pace soon." What else was she going to do? She couldn't control biology, just respond when nature called.

She reached for the snacks and relaxed again. Between the warm water, the massage and the whiskey, she might truly pass out right here. "Thanks for this," she said after a moment.
