MINISTERIAL ELECTION CALLED
Following Wizengamot Deal, Election Set

After a late-night session of the Wizengamot, the Ministry of Magic announced an election set for October 19th, 1893 in which Minister Justin Ross is not expected to run.

This decision does not come entirely as a surprise — Minister Ross was elected in 1887 following the resignation of Minister Balthazar Urquart, and only persistent public crises in which he steered the Ministry without public incident have staved off an earlier election. Candidates are expected to announce within the coming weeks, and the Daily Prophet will continue to be the paper of record for all things Ministerial. Potential candidates mentioned by our sources include Mr. Charles Macmillan, Mr. Timoleon Maxime, and Mr. Murdock Greyback — but the field is wide open, and we could see many surprising candidates from inside and outside of the Ministry, such as a woman.

Setting an election date has been on the Wizengamot's agenda for the last few months, but it was only after a deal was struck on a few other pieces of concern for Minister Ross' administration that the date was set.

These are:
  • Immediate and extended relatives of an applicant to the Ministry for hire or promotion may no longer provide a reference for that applicant.
  • Ministry supervisors are expected to hold annual performance reviews with employees in their departments.
  • The creation of a Ministry scholarship fund for up to five needy Hogwarts students seeking to complete their O.W.L.s, and the creation of a Ministry scholarship fund for up to three needy Hogwarts students seeking to complete their N.E.W.T.s who will sign a contract to work for the Ministry for three years after their finishing school

These pieces relate to the Minister's longterm initiative to "improve meritocracy in the Ministry" — which has frequently stalled in the past. Some of our sources suspect that Minister Ross agreed not to run on the basis that more conservative Wizengamot members pass these items.

"I am honored to have steered the Ministry over the past few years and am proud of the legacy we made by repealing the half-breed ban, maintaining relations with Queen Victoria, and steering us towards a more fair and just magical Britain," Minister Ross said in a public statement.
