Introducing Ned! -
Edward Flourish - July 1, 2023
Hello, this is Ned, who I absolutely did not forget to do an intro post for!
Ned Flourish will eventually inherit half the bookshop
Flourish & Blott's in London, and has been effectively co-owner for over a decade already. He loves fairy tales and spends a good deal of energy hiding his disappointment that his life didn't turn out to be one. He lost his best friend
Nick Blott over his marriage to
Marion Flourish, and their marriage has since become a little — fraught. Despite this, he is an engaged father to their two children (age 12 & 10, both adoptable canons), a devoted son to his widowed mother (also an adoptable canon) and trying to be the best husband he can be.
His personality: bright and chipper but also occasionally obsessive about weird things and can get tunnel-vision in those moments. Supportive and empathetic. Loves kids and storytelling.
FRIENDS - respectable MC men around his age, ideally other business owners who are understanding about things like "I can't this month, busy with work" type scheduling conflicts xD Either not friends or at least not close with Nick, since the two no longer speak. (Wystan Pomfrey was discussed in another thread so if you're friends with Stan you probably also fit here)
BOOK NERDS - does your character work in publishing or are they an author themselves? Does your character buy a lot of books for some reason? Ned spends about 65% of his life in the shop so he probably knows you better than he knows his wife <3
CHILDREN - Ned wrote and illustrated some children's books, and hosts events at the shop for children periodically (eg the staged reading this month, puppet shows, that sort of thing). If your child character runs around Diagon Alley unsupervised or lightly supervised on a regular basis he's probably pulled them aside to regal them with a story (and a snack). If your kid is around the same age as one of his kids, he'll assume you're friends and treat you like an adopted son/daughter. In the same vein, he might have some extant relationships with
parents of kids in these categories.
NEIGHBORS - If you live/work in Diagon Alley or live in a nearby wizarding area of London, there's connection via proximity :P
...AND FEELINGS? - I don't have a firm plot arc/endgame in mind with Ned's whole ~relationship situation, but since he's having trouble connecting with his wife, he's open for emotional affair hurling.
Probably slow-burn and open-ended but who could say for sure. I presume Ned is straight (he was at least very much in love with his wife when they married xD) and would probably go for a woman somewhere around his age +/- 5 years, but really this is wild speculation, I have no idea >>
I am also open to
[ANYTHING ELSE] that seems entertaining to you all, please throw any and all ideas at me! Ned has a lot of past drama we're threadding through now but his future is ENTIRELY UNCERTAIN so I'm really up to anything!

Oh I have legit things this time!
He would have been classmates with Mason and Quin, obviously the latter owns a shop, but Mason is the bigger nerd. Either would make a good friend! Eugene is a little younger, but also has a kiddo.
Elsie and Daffy are my book peeps, and Daff is in the alley, obvs. And woo Elsie has kids lol.
More of a stretch, but if he does another children's book
Alvin Bixby is an artist, he could do the illustration!

I don’t have too much, but I do have:
Delilah, who I think is friends with his wife, so he would at least know her. Plus she had two littles, so I’m sure she’s brought them around the shop a time or two.
Reginald Alderton is a huge reader, so I’m sure he sees him a lot. His continental tour involved visiting all the libraries.
They’re similar in personality, and I feel like he’d get on really well with Gus.
