Henry Thompsett vs. Sisse Thompsett - Hamish Darrow - January 21, 2023

December 10th, 1892 — Hogwarts Great Hall
Dueling Tournament

Hamish smiled privately to himself. While it was not unheard of for siblings to face of against one another in this sort of thing, it was far enough from the norm that the wizard allowed himself a small chuckle each time it occurred. He reviewed the rules for the Thompsetts, doubting very much the brother-sister duo needed to be reminded about not maiming one another, then bid young Mr. Thompsett to begin.

RE: Henry Thompsett vs. Sisse Thompsett - Henry Thompsett - January 21, 2023

On some level he knew it could happen but now, seeing Sisse standing on the other side of the dueling platform Henry felt a little off. Sure, his last duel was against a witch but this was his sister, somebody he respected and loved, not just another student.

As reluctant as he was to face his own sister in a duel, Henry wasn't going to go easy on her just because they were siblings. Then again he didn't want to hurt her or make her angry either so it was more of a challenge. He also felt she was better at dueling than he was, being older after all. Well, best Henry could do was his best so he gave his sister a proper bow and readied himself for his first spell. All he could hope if he was to lose this duel, he could at least win one match against Sisse, otherwise he'll likely never live it down.

Deciding against his usual opening spells, Henry cast the silence charm, hoping this would prevent his sister from being able to cast a spell at all. It slipped his mind she may know non-verbal magic at this point so he may very well be in for a surprise.

Sisse had not expected to face her little brother in a match, but it felt similar to facing Maddy. Giving Henry a smile she curstied and readied herself. Taking a deep breath she cast a levitating charm in an attempt to lift Henry's wand out of his hand and ruin his aim.

Young Mister Thompsett's spell came fast and effective—when his sister opened her mouth for her own casting, no sound came out, effectively preventing any counter she might have managed. Hamish easily declared Thompsett the winner of the first pass, and bid Miss Thompsett to begin the second.

That had not gone how Sisse had wanted, but it was good to see that Henry could protect himself. With a smile Sisse followed protocol and readied herself for the next round.

Immediately she cast, "Mimble Wimble!" She may have started learning nonverbal spells, but Henry hadn't, let him try to successfully pronounce a spell with his tongue bound.

Henry was actually surprised he managed to get his spell off before Sisse could cast her own. He was also reassured by his sister's smile she wasn't upset at losing the first round against him.

When the second round started, he decided to be a bit more direct in his choice of spells. As soon as Sisse started casting a spell he fired off with a disarming spell.

Once again, it appeared Miss Thompsett's extra year of experience would be the deciding factor (Hamish would not at all say Mr. Thompsett lacked skill, just speed).

"Congratulations to Miss Thompsett," Hamish announced, "and well dueled, both of you. Five points to Gryffindor, regardless."

Kayte was reminded that actually reading posts is a good idea, and Henry Thompsett was informed to begin the tie-breaker.

He was certain he had been quick enough to cast his spell, the words were already at the tip of his tongue yet the moment he tried to say the words for his disarming charm, his tongue simply stopped working. Thus, instead of a nice clear 'Expelliarmus' all that came out of his mouth was incomprehensible sputtering.

Flushing slightly at failing to cast such a common spell, Henry could only shrug and give his sister a thumbs up for successfully beating him. Once Mr. Darrow dispelled the tongue tying curse off of him, Henry took his position on the dueling stage once more.

Giving his arms a little shake to loosen them up he moved into position then waited for Mr. Darrow to give the signal to begin. As soon as he did, Henry quickly called out "Petrificus Totalus!' as he moved his wand in the appropriate gestures. If luck was with him he'll paralize his sister before she could even cast a spell.

With the takes even Sisse realized she ought to cast something defensive. She would have liked a jelly leg jinx but Henry was practical in his spells during Dueling club meetings so that certainly was not the wisest course of action. The moment she was bid to start she cast "Protego." In a clear voice.

It would seem the lad was much better suited to offense than defence—though as always, Miss Thompsett put in an excellent effort. Still, it was plainly the younger of the siblings that would be the victor today, and Hamish made the necessary announcements and awarded Gryffindor their house points.
