Professor d' Ville is a tall woman, normally clad in richly textured black robes, built with sharp shoulders to compliment her even sharper cheekbones. A fashionable eccentric, one would describe her as elegant and chic, if not ominous; her nails are lacquered scarlet (and her lips painted to match), almost always employs the service of an opulent set of pearl earrings and a necklace, and strapped over her right eye at all times is an eyepatch, emblazoned with a green, beaded eye.
On occasion, she wears dark turbans adorned with oily feathers, and fringed shawls, and weather permitting, all sorts of fur pelts and collars. At parties, she is known for wearing taxidermised animals and magical creatures, such as juvenile dragons or niffler pelts. It should be noted that Madame d' Ville uses her left hand to both write and use her wand.
- 1839 - Born to upper-middle class purebloods, the d' Ville family is known for its eccentric and baleful characters, particularly doom-preaching seers and murderers. In the late 1700s, the family experienced a decline in society after the nefarious Félix d' Ville, a French dark wizard and seer, murdered his brother in public, just outside of the d' Ville family house in Paris. By the 1830s, Narcisse d' Ville, the nephew of Félix, restored some integrity to the family's reputation by becoming Head of the French Ministry's auror division. In June, 1839, Narcisse and his wife welcome their first and only daughter, Esmé. Their son, Otes, is not thrilled.
- 1850 - Esmé begins her studies at Beauxbaton's, where she often finds herself into mischief, despite her good grades. Admittedly, she is quite a bully.
- 1856 - In her sixth year at Beauxbaton's, Esmé is sent home early just before Halloween after predicting the death of her classmate in a dramatic fit. She continues her studies at home, via a Beauxbaton's issued governess.
- 1857 - After returning home and continuing her studies under Madame L'Engle, her governess, Esmé graduates early from Beauxbaton's with stellar grades. At home, Esmé initially fears her newfound sight, after foreseeing the death of her parents while drinking her morning tea, and refuses to see anyone without wearing a blindfold.
- 1859 - At her mother's behest, Esmé begins wearing dark glasses, rather than a blindfold, and sets out to see the world. In her travels, she discovers that her gifts of sight aren't entirely that awful; she has incredible foresight, using it to charm young men, and women, to her advantage. In the fall, Esmé's parents die in a fire, leaving her and her brother Otes their estate.
- 1864 - Esmé's travels across Europe and Asia conclude early after the expected death of her then beau, Bénédicte Thayer, a cursebreaker employed by the French branch of Gringott's Bank. After years of travels, and collecting a very colourful cast of cohorts, Esmé finds herself transfigured from scared seer to portentous prophet, using her gift of sight to to forge her formidable reputation as a great force of divination. Her popularity in magical society reached a global scale after a dinner in Paris, where she accompanied a local French diplomat to a gala held by the International Confederation of Wizards. There, Esmé charmed the Russian Ambassador, not just by predicting his future promotion but also by informing him of his upcoming set of triplets, and later dazzled the international press with her unique and controversial dragon-hide shawl and matching boots.
- 1870 - After her first taste of fame in the international news, Esmé fanned the coals of her career with intrigue and gossip, eventually opening an independent business in Paris in 1875, with a loan from her off-and-on-again lover, the Parisian ambassador to the German Ministry of Magic. In time, the Haus d' Ville became one of the most prominent divination houses to French upper class, predominantly witches, and more importantly, politicians and criminals. To gain more allure with the press, Esmé begins wearing an eye-patch with an extravagant, beaded eye, with which she claims to prevent her from seeing the future of those around her unexpectedly.
- 1873 - Esmé predicts the death of the French Minister for Magic, and gains favour with his successor and assassin by blackmailing him. Soon after, the Haus d' Ville becomes the most famous French divination parlour after a grant delivered personally by the newly appointed Interim-Minister for Magic himself, in thanks to the Madame d' Ville for her constant services to her government.
- 1880 - After finding true financial comfort and fame, Madame d' Ville publishes a hexalogy of texts on the subject of Divination and her own long-played game of hide and seek with death. Esmé d' Ville soon after becomes the face of French divination, particularly after gracing the cover of popular French magazine, Héraut Magique.
- 1881 - Esmé becomes employed by the Beauxbaton Academy of Magic as Professor of Divination, where she enjoys becoming the eccentric, ominous professor, often followed by a thick cloud of cigarette smoke.
- 1886 - Esmé foresees herself marrying French socialite and playboy, Mainard Paquet, who ultimately dies an untimely death in the Spring, leaving her a sizeable fortune and a house in Normandy. The French press begin to report negatively upon her following Paquet's demise, connecting her to infamous Parisian gangster and dark wizard, Armel Garçon.
- 1888 - Mainard Paquet's ghost haunts the house in Normandy, and somehow, it is set ablaze. Esmé claims to have foreseen the tragedy, and thankfully was able to retrieve his and her valuables.
- 1890 - In October, when looking in a mirror and applying topical creams, the Madame d' Ville foresees her own murder, but unfortunately, she could not decipher who, and thus spends the next two years travelling across the globe yet again, this time fleeing anyone wearing the colour white (the only known detail of her soon-to-be-murderer).
- Summer, 1892 - Madame d' Ville heads to England after a vision of clarity; herself surrounded by teenagers in black uniformed cloaks. Shortly after, she secures a job at Hogwarts School as the Professor of Divination.
The Madame d' Ville arrived that evening to Hogwarts Castle in a polished, blackwood carriage pulled by three Alpian thestrals; in the silvery moonlight the cloudless July sky, their emaciated, beaked faces looked like sickles as they soared through the air. As they brought the carriage down to a smooth stop, a small set of stairs unfurled from beneath the ornately carved door, each step coated with a strip of dark green carpet patterned with small black eyes, some wincing as the door swung out, clutched by a singular, red-clawed hand. The Madame d' Ville exited the carriage similarly to a drunk might, but she happened to be entirely sober, besides a lungful of cigarette smoke; she slithered down the stairs and stumbled a tad, thanking no one as she steadied herself. There, outlined by moonlight, she looked like some sort of ominous, black bird, swept up in dark furs and glittering black robes.
"So ziss ees Hahgwahrts, hm?" she purred, adjusting the oily feather protruding crookedly from her veiled cap. Slowly she raked her cold eyes across the sprawling, many towered castle with disdain, fondly remembering Beauxbaton's only for a second. Still, she was sure she'd find far less colour in such a dismal place as Englahnd.
