Abraxas Crabbe vs. Edison Moony - Tybalt Kirke - June 28, 2022
23rd July, 1892 — Headquarters of the London Society for the Practice of Combative Magic
No one assigned to judge these things ever much wanted to take on the student duels, did they? Tomorrow's competition would see the adults, even some flashy professionals, taking part in proper duels, with elegance and flair and far fewer foolish errors, misfired spells, or unwanted mishaps.
Well, not Tybalt. He was very much here for the mishaps. So, it was with an encouraging grin that he reeled off the rules, eyeing both of the boys up on the platform. "Mr... Crabbe, you're up first!" he elected, waving him on.

Rex thumbed the grip of his wand nervously. Oh, the Hufflepuff knew there were no real stakes involved here—if anything, it was an opportunity to learn. Nonetheless, he had a bevy of uncles, aunts, and even his younger siblings in the audience, all of whom the lad was determined to make proud.
Resolved and a little anxious, Rex took his place across from Moony—older, and probably wiser, knowing his luck! At the judge's urging, the boy moved to cast, "Expeliarmus!"

Ned smiled encouragingly at Rex, as he often did when embarking on a duel with a student in a younger year. While he would ultimately like to win the competition, the Gryffindor merely viewed it as extra practice that would inevitably help him toward his auror goal. In truth, he was more looking forward to observing the adult duels in order to study their techniques, but dueling with students he didn't know offered an element of surprise he needed to hone in on.
With a customary bow, Ned stepped back into a defensive position. He quickly cycled through a variety of spells, landing on a simple shield charm to start with, "Protego!"

Well, both boys looked very determined, and the latter's stance was especially good – and indeed, his shield charm was up in time, and perfectly placed. A straightforward round, if ever there was one!
"Mr. Moony takes the point and may cast again!" Tybalt declared, without beating around the bush.

Ned allowed himself a small smile when it seemed he'd won the round. Always one to build other people up, he then looked to Rex and called out, encouragingly "You've got this, Crabbe."
The teen sorted through his mental Rolodex of spells yet again and settled on something simple, yet effective. His aim wasn't to embarrass anyone by elongating their teeth or turning their heads unnecessarily into pumpkins. He wished to practice real world spells that could inevitably assist him on the job. "Petrificus totalus."

His heart sank just a little—but then, of course Moony was quicker on the draw. This was short-lived, though, as the older boy's encouragements did wonders for Rex's confidence. Even if he didn't quite believe the Gryffindor, after all, it was nice to know that Moony was, at least in a fashion, in his corner.
Resisting the urge to simply duck out of the way, Rex instead cast a shield charm of his own.

Aww. Weren't they an amiable pair?
Supposing the duel would be over sooner rather than later, Tybalt watched the second round unfold as... young Mr. Crabbe's shield held strong?! "Mr. Crabbe evens the score!" Tyb exclaimed (with a barely-suppressed whoop), delighted by this plot twist. "Go ahead and cast again."

A lopsided grin fell across the Hufflepuff's face at his success. He allowed himself to savour the moment, at least briefly, before casting a stinging hex.
(Bat bogeys would have been more entertaining, but seemed rather harsh when Moony was being so amiable.)

Ned's mouth stretched into a wide grin, glad Rex's shield had held. The younger boy was talented! He would have to seek him out to see if he had any interest in joining Dueling Club.
When it seemed they were on to the next round, he quickly chose the stunning spell since it wasn't likely to produce any lasting damage or grave injury. "Stupefy."
