Teaching Art in Victorian Era -
Terence Higgs - March 15, 2022
I was just about to post a Lesson thread with Terence and it occurred to me some art classes may be split by gender. Considering the use of nude models may be considered inappropriate for girls so wanted to do a quick check and see what would be expected at Hogwarts.

So interestingly - life drawing from live models wouldn't really have happened until someone was considered a really advanced student (like college level) for the most part in the 19th century life drawing was done by copying other artists drawings - like Davinchis life drawings
'it was not until 1893 that they (women) were allowed to draw from the male model – and then only if he was wearing a voluminous length of fabric thoroughly wrapped around his bathing trunks.'
so women of any age were not allowed to draw from live males ever in 1892 and only allowed to draw dressed women.
And basically under 18's of either gender were not really 'allowed' - or it wasn't considered appropriate for them to draw from live models. It would be more likely that they would be bring in a statue of the Madonna and have the students draw that.

I've never gone by art research for student accuracy, but Acacia here has loved painting flowers since I made her in her... fifth year? She was in art classes back then, and I doubt that the curriculum would have changed abundantly since then and I also doubt that all she learned about was flowers.

I was more asking if in general, would art classes be co-ed or separated by gender specifically where nude models were concerned. The comments I received so far however, reminded me that nude models may not even be used for 'high school' level art classes (maybe 6-7 years in the case of Hogwarts). I do thank everybody who has responded so far, your feedback has been helpful and I'm sure I can dredge up my own experiences taking art in school before I took it in college.
I welcome more comments if anybody has any but for now I have enough info to get a lesson post up for all the art students at Hogwarts.

Re: sex segregation, that’s your call! Where music and art aren’t for credit but to round out the individual, we leave it up to the instructors :)
