Who know's about unspeakables?
I assume their work is basically treated like 'classified' work in the modern era - so some people in government know what they are up to.
Just the Minister for magic? Just Cabinet members? Senior wizengemot - or might some items be referred to the experimental committees depending on what acutally is being researched.
I assume there would be occaisions when some of the classified work is declassified if it's in the public interest or suitably developed into something usable and safe for the public.

I think of it more as a research and development sort of thing. Some things are kept under wraps within the department because they're just too weird and dangerous and some things aren't a secret but are so complex and confusing no one really asks about them anyway xD

I figured it was like R&D - but as it's like classified R&D - it's more who would know what's going on in there? Like I assume the unspeakables know what each other are doing - or at least Balt knows what each is up to - what their research projects ar - and then presumably there is a reporting line up from Balt.
so would the wizengemot know what they do- at a high project level
MoM, head of DMLE, some of the research committees?
Or just the MoM getting reports from the head of the unit?

I mean Lucius (Cheif Warlock) knows what they do but that’s by virtue of having been in there himself moreso than his current gig.

I'm not sure how much others would know about the DoM, esp since it's the only department in the Ministry that technically doesn't need to answer to the DMLE according to the HP Wiki. And given that the 15th Minister's attempt to shut down the DoM went largely ignored by Unspeakables, I think it'd be safe to say it was the DoM and only the DoM that knew what they did, save for former employees as Kayte stated above.
But even so, I wouldn't be surprised if employees of the DoM, upon their exit of the department, either a) had their memories modified after their departure from the DoM [something likely baked into the contract they sign upon their employment] or b) were sworn to secrecy/bound by some sort of magical non-disclosure agreement.
If A, I could see it being a complex memory charm wherein they remembered they were an employee but basically all the things they had worked on would just be redacted from their brain. Obviously Option A would be a bit more difficult to apply to our specific canon than Option B :P

I could see that, if specific Unspeakable work is ever declassified/deemed successful, it'd likely be extremely filtered through to other departments before it ever reached the public. But in cases of, say Time incidents that affect the public's reality, it would be revealed but merely as a blanket statement rather than something rife with details, like we've done in the past!
