The Greatest Wealth Is Health -
Donna Conray - January 5, 2022
January 2nd, 1892 — St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies & Injuries
The craze of the New Year started to die down slowly, though without too much noise and business the hospital had set in terms of needing medical attention. Knowing how the holidays are, though, even those like Donna couldn't escape the craziness of it all. The great bustle and activity seemed to have started back up again in the corridors of St Mungo's, however, things slowly getting back to normal now that the new year started, although it had been about a day since 1892 started to set in. Healers in their healer robes were moving up and down, Donna politely nodding their way if they were to have looked in her direction.
After making her rounds, Donna found the ward she was looking for, which was her very own department. A patient that she needed to see laid in a bed not too far from where she stood and when she reached them, she saw a box full of the appropriate essentials needed and a medical chart by their side. A kind but bright and beaming smile came from Donna's side, a smile that would radiate what she hoped would be full of reassurance and happiness while making eye contact.
"Hello, I'm Healer Donna Conray, what a delight it is to meet you. Mind if I take a look?" Donna would ask, hoping to not startle the patient in front of her.

Dot always felt uneasy around healers — she couldn't shake the feeling that if she let enough of them get close to her one of them would sense that something was the matter with her — but the murtlap bite on her foot was not going to heal itself, so here she was. Venturing out into the English channel in January had likely not been the best idea. Even if they hadn't stumbled upon a bunch of murtlaps, the cold might have seen her lose a toe all the same. On the other hand, Dot was not always known for good ideas. She spent so much of her time being awfully smart, and every once in a while it paid to do something foolish. This simply hadn't been one of those times. It might have been a lark if they'd made it through the water all right, with only wet hems and sandy toes to show for it. As it was, her older sister was rather disappointed that Dot's idiocy had seen their seaside holiday cut so short.
"Pleasure to meet you, Madam Conray," Dot said, all smiles. She might be uneasy, but it wouldn't do to show it. "I'd be most obliged if you did."

"I appreciate you letting me have a look."
Donna would examine what seemed to be going on with the patient, humming quietly as she tried with all of her might to find the root of the problem. When it came down to treating patients, Donna liked to do her very best as a healer to give the patients the most proper care possible. It was a part of her job description after all, or at least it was something similar to it. To sum it up, Donna wanted to do what was best to give the patients she cares for the proper treatment.
Without making the patient in front of her too uncomfortable, Donna went ahead to examine more of what exactly happened.
"What brings you to St. Mungos?" Donna asked, trying to get a better understanding of what went down from start to finish. Plus, this was the proper way for her to try and start making small talk with the patient she was bound to care for. On the other hand, she wanted to make the patient as comfortable as possible went did all that she could to heal any possible wounds that are destined to be taken care of if there were any.

Dot needed very little provocation to start talking about herself, nervous or not. Everyone liked talking about themselves, and she was no exception to the rule; just self-aware enough to realize it. "Oh, normally we would have gone to Hogsmeade Hospital — we live there, in Hogsmeade, but just now we're on holiday," she explained. "Mum thought it would be a lark to get the family together and rent a little cottage on the southern seaside, so we were Dorset. We were meant to be there for three more days, only then this happened with the murtlaps. My whole family is out in the waiting room, I think," she said with a shrug. Her mother had never taken the notion of family loyalty lightly, so Dot doubted that anyone had been allowed to go back to the cottage or their home in Hogsmeade while she was still laid up in the hospital. Her sister was probably having a proper fit.
"The holiday was rather fun up until the murtlaps," she said pleasantly. "I've always liked the seaside, even in January. There's something so nice about seeing the water tumble around all stormy like that. Though I suppose I shouldn't have gone swimming," she reflected. "Even if there hadn't been murtlaps I might have caught my death of cold, as the saying goes."

Donna would nod, hearing every word that her patient was able to share. To her, it was rather intriguing. She, in a sense, loved being able to get to know people. When she heard about the Murtlaps, she sighed.
"I have heard of those creatures, very foul, they are," she told Dorothea.
Donna, as a Healer, would often do her very best at trying to heal her patients as much as possible, especially in her own department. Murtlaps, or sea rats as Donna liked to call them, were, in a sense, not the greatest. Donna didn't really remember if she ran into one of those, but she hoped that she would never have to go through that. When Donna was trying to locate the sudden bruise or bite mark if there was any, she arched an eyebrow. At the same time, she was intrigued by the saying.
"Death of cold, hm? Interesting, I would say."

Dot frowned. She wasn't sure why the healer had chosen to respond to that particular phrase, but she couldn't help but be a bit unsettled by it. Had she said something wrong? Had she given the healer any cause for concern beyond the injury on her foot? It was a common enough saying, wasn't it? Having spent a good many of her formative years abroad, Dot did sometimes find herself using turns of phrase that were not common English parlance, but that hadn't happened in a good long while. She'd been back at home in England for two, nearly three years now, so she mostly spoke as though she'd never left.
"It's just a saying," she said, with a smile and a quick giggle — both were forced, but neither looked it. "How's my foot?"

At this point, Donna didn't know if she made this worse. This made her feel awkward, making her feel that she put herself in that position. At the same time, Donna didn't really know how to respond. Now that she had stated her answer, of course, she felt terrible.
Could there have been a different response? Donna didn't really know, though deep down, she wished that she could've said something better. In fact, she could've chosen to not say anything at all. Why she chose to respond was way beyond her, but Donna didn't want to be rude by not saying anything.
She would nod, giggling.
"Understandable, my apologies for taking it the wrong way," she responded with. It was the least that she could've done after feeling horrible about her response. Donna would take a closer look at her patient's foot, examining it as much as she could before coming up with a conclusion.
"Your foot looks rather okay. I've read that murtlap bites aren't really that serious, though there's a potion that can be used to heal this kind of wound."

Was it only Dot's nerves, or was the healer examining her foot a bit more intently than was necessary? Was this a bad sign? Was she looking for something particular? No, apparently it was just Dot's nerves; when she straightened up from her examination the healer didn't seem as though anything was particularly the matter. Rather okay.
"Well, that's good news," Dot said with a quick smile. "Is it a one-time sort of thing, and it heals right away, or do I need to keep applying it?" Dot didn't have much experience with western healers — she'd spent most of her childhood in the east, surrounded mostly by Muggles, and they did things quite differently. The idea that something which currently looked a little gruesome might be fixed in only a few minutes was still a little strange for her to think about, though she certainly wouldn't complain to be out of here faster.

Donna would softly smile back at her patient. As a Healer, the least she could do, at least In her Department, is make sure that all goes well when it comes to injuries that involve animals of any sort. If anything, though, Donna would be sure to take a second look before going ahead and making the final decision on what the answer was going to be instead of going ahead and making an assumption that was entirely false.
When Donna heard her asking a question, she took a moment to think before proceeding to answer her directly.
"To answer your question..." Donna started before continuing,
"I think applying it would be a huge help. I encourage this to be closely monitored." She tried her very best to help her patient as much as she can. After all, that
is part of her job description as Healer at a hospital such as St Mungo's.

Dot bit her lip and offered a somewhat sheepish smile. "Well, that will certainly put a damper on our holiday," she joked lightly. She could just imagine her sister's reaction if Dot spent the rest of the week laid up in an armchair with her foot propped up on a pillow, having to goad the rest of her family into helping her apply a potion to her healing bite.
Actually, that sounded a bit fun — maybe she would go out of her way to ensure her sister was the one tasked with helping her.

Donna would kind of chuckle lightly alongside her patient. Of course, she felt bad that her patient had to go through such turmoil when it comes to being in contact with such creatures. At the end of the day, however, it was Donna's job to make sure that all illnesses related to Magical Creatures were well taken care of instead of having them untreated.
"Well, I'm glad you came in when you did..." Donna started before she continued,
"It would've stunk rather badly if this wasn't treated."
Donna tried her very best to do her job, especially when she first started working at St Mungos. She tried not to bring herself down too much, though. After all, she is doing all that she can to make patients like the one she took care of just now feel a bit better, even if they feel a certain type of way, though Donna didn't want to assume too much on how they were feeling, not that she would ever do that sort of thing anyway.

"A young woman who smells bad," Dot said gravely. "A fate worse than death." She was joking, obviously, and showed this with a hearty laugh immediately after finishing her sentence. Despite trying to be funny, she was still vaguely uncomfortable lingering in a hospital; they had never made her feel at ease, since she was a child. The sooner she was out of this place, the better. "Well, thank you for everything, Ma'am."

"Oh, it's no problem," Donna managed to say in response. Deep inside, she was glad that she was able to help someone in need. After all, working in a hospital is something she always enjoyed doing. Of course, there were a few challenges that she had run into.
At the end of the day, however, she is very happy to make note of how far she has come. Donna had learned quite a lot during her time at St Mungo's so far. Her parents had always told her to do something that made her happy. Working at St Mungo's was the best decision that she had ever made.
