The judges took their time assessing the conjuring round, spending longer on fewer competitors before rendering their verdict.
Miss Edevane's non-verbal efforts had resulted in non-success, making the third-season debutante an easy elimination. Miss Stuart-Lane was, likewise, eliminated, but simply by virtue of not being
as impressive as her competition. Frankly, all of the ladies remaining at this point were quite impressive.
Miss Farris' candles were a success, though they did extinguish themselves rather quickly. That Miss Adebayo's conjuring was successful
without a wand might have named her the round's standout if her conjuration were a bit more inspired. That honour went to Miss Lycoris Dempsey, whose technicolor birds (Fitz did not know what kind and certainly did not care enough to ask) wom the judges' favour.
And then there was the elder Miss Dempsey.
Bats. Fitz was not altogether surprised by Miss Dempsey's choice, but given the horrified looks of the judges, he was even less surprised when she was dismissed from the competition. Had it been a duel, and the bats feral, she would have done well, but in a competition such as this there was a fine line between
impressive and
horrifying.
Fitz addressed the remaining three competitors.
"For your final casting of this competition," the judges had asked him to say
showcase, but the wizard was more inclined to call a spade a spade,
"you will simply produce your best work in any of the categories conducted here today. The very best among you shall be named our winner."
