Gimme the
obvious criminals. Go for that temp muse. Bring them back if they've only done petty crimes and/or escaped arrest. Bring me the drama of characters that are outwardly bad people.

I kind of forgot the canon list was a thing and I rediscovered it today and caught plot ideas so INFLICTING THEM ON YOU ALL.
Quote:Mr. Oswald Beamish is a pureblood (born 1850). An activist, he frequently champions the rights of various non-human beings (-2). His most recent project is the rights of goblins.
Jules' unwilling BFF! I could totally see her gravitating towards him at every social event and being like "omgggg we have so much in common you're like my
best friend" but also never telling him about her work so he's just like "??? who tf are you and why are you always talking to me?" And also he probably assumes she's in love with him and is being progressively less subtle about the fact that he's Not Into Her
also in my dreams Beamish isn't interested because he's already in love with a goblin but she won't be with him publicly because that would allow critics to dismiss his activism as sentimentality
Quote:Mr. Adalbert Waffling is a pureblood (born 1852) who was a Ravenclaw when he attended Hogwarts school. He was recognized as a gifted student at Hogwarts and spends a large majority of his time working on his theories of magic. He has a considerable amount of money which allows him to concentrate on his experiments and hypotheses at his leisure. Ms. ----- Waffling is a pureblood (born 1859) who was considerably less fortunate than her older brother who appears to have inherited all the intellect. She is very beautiful but not ideal for an intelligent conversation. She was sorted into Hufflepuff.
So imagine Emrys starts courting Ms. Waffling because she's ostensibly dumb enough not to catch on to any of his private affairs once they're married, and then there are double dates with
Anthea Selwyn who actually gets along
great with Adalbert because they just discuss magical theory all day, but it's quite obvious to everyone that Emrys and Ms. Waffling do not enjoy each other's company particularly. They marry anyway, but Emrys immediately regrets it and wishes he could be rid of her, so he starts suggesting increasingly dangerous hobbies/leisure activities in the hopes that she'll accidentally die but she keeps surviving a la

- more older, married socialites to play puppeteer during the season
- political-minded characters with political schemes in mind
- characters who do their job passably but always walking the fine line between employment and unemployment
- era-appropriate misogynistic characters who aren't quiet about it

Play my coworkers

or if not, enjoy this collection of head canons about how the Spirit Div works.
Head of Division: Has at least two members of his family who are ghosts and initially joined the division to advocate for one of them. Has since become disillusioned with ghosts because
jfc they're still here and keep meddling in his life. He quietly thinks regulation to reduce spirit mobility wouldn't be the worst thing but keeps those opinions to himself. Very annoyed when people call him "the ghost guy" or similar. Resents Percy Adlard for existing and thereby removing his best chance at leaving the division. His face when dealing with Ford mostly looks like:
The Paperwork Jockey: Deals with incoming complaints and assigns them to other employees, and also liaises with other departments to arrange for collaborations when necessary. Always incredibly peppy and cheerful but if you annoy her she'll give you bad assignments for weeks as punishment. Very good at holding grudges.
Head of historical accuracy: Handles research, which involves trying to track down information on the lives of problematic spirits and talking to ghosts and asking questions about history which could be useful for other Ministry branches or the Museum or whatever. Allergic to dust, and since most of their job involves dusty books and old artifacts they're always sneezing. Has weird hobbies.
I only talk to important ghosts: Takes Hogwarts cases and other Important/ High Visibility spirit cases. Theoretically should also take Diagon Alley/magical London cases but often pushes their work off on more junior members when they don't feel like it's important enough for them to deal with. Angling for the Spirit Div Head position and occasionally gets a few Dwight from
The Office moments in team meetings where he's trying really hard to give the impression he's second in command but the Division Head is just rolling his eyes.
I don't talk to anyone: A man who never smiles. The person who goes to Azkaban if there's ever trouble with the dementors (which happens very infrequently); because of this they have at least one friend in Law Enforcement and often makes vague comments that they're needed to help with "an auror investigation" — really they're just dodging work. Seldom gets assignments because The Paperwork Jockey is afraid of him. Has, on occasion, gone off during the middle of the workday to drink at a sketchy pub or gamble on cards but mostly he enjoys lurking around the Ministry in a vaguely menacing fashion or finding interesting places to take a nap.
"Ghosts aren't allowed to be mean to me, are they?" investigator: Typically takes Hogsmeade cases which means they're more of a conflict resolution person than an investigator, per ce. Does not get along well with
Barnaby Wye. Often harried. Transferred from another division in the DRCMC and sometimes makes comments about how much better life was in the other division, but doesn't actually believe that.
"Weird spooky noise" investigation crew: Ford and the one member of the Spirit Div who's junior to him, who get the Muggle London/assorted random places in the English countryside cases, and both frequently get bullied into taking on the workloads of ^Important Ghosts Only guy and ^Never Smiles guy. The other employee would really prefer to jump Ford in the seniority chain because he thinks Ford is a nerd, but can't quite manage it because he is still inexperienced enough that he has to ask Ford for help with his workload frequently, which ruins the

Ghost ideas~
dead Deb won't quit, fantastic idea courtesy of Jen
A ghost who turned detective in death to solve their murder (which no one seems to care about) and has never made any progress with it, but keeps solving other crimes without even trying. Keeps harassing the Spirit Div to help him look for clues to his murder. In reality he hasn't solved it because he died of natural causes but refuses to believe that.
A woman killed on the eve of her wedding who haunts her would-be husband to prevent him from marrying someone else, and sometimes crashes other weddings too just to tell everyone what a sham the notion of "everlasting love" is.
A creature/being/magical theory aficionado who is really upset that they can't move things now that they're dead and keeps trying to trick humans into making a poltergeist so that they can try to tame it & make it do their bidding.
A ghost who doesn't speak English, so Ford keeps bringing people from Magical Co-op to see if they recognize the language and the ghost is getting increasingly offended because
you think I'm Italian?? How dare you! etc etc.
A ghost who died in a cave centuries ago and was only recently uncovered so they know nothing about modern life and ask ridiculous questions about everything to everyone they see. Also, tries to impose 15th century notions of honor and morality on everyone.
A shop manager/owner who dies but keeps coming in to work, which really frustrates him employees who didn't like him that much (not to mention that one of them would much rather have his job), so they complain about him every day in the hopes that spirit div will force him to retire.
Spirit rights activist, staging protests the living people keep literally walking through the middle of and lobbying Spirit div for things like property ownership rights and suffrage, which... is obviously problematic.
A ghost who wants to avenge their own death (which they believe was arranged by a prominent family) by killing all of the members of that family. Obviously, it is difficult to do this without a body, so they devise elaborate Rube-Golberg style scenarios to lead the family members to accidentally die, then ask random living people to put things in place in exchange for ghostly favors like spying on someone — ie "yes I can tell you if your husband is cheating but in return you must place this rubber ball beneath this particular street sign next Sunday, and no you may not ask any questions about it."
In short: make ghosts please <3

Someone who works in Ludicrous Patents to have a series of hilarious letter exchanges with Ford.
Character: Hey do you see anything wrong with this patent from a spirit div perspective?
Ford: I mean aside from the fact that it's stupid and won't work, no.
Ford: Hey what if instead you tried —
Character: You know I'm not inventing this, right? I did not ask for improvements.
Ford: Yeah okay but hear me out —
Character: I just literally don't care.
It would be fun
