RE: Pride & Prejudice - Charles Macmillan - February 18, 2021

Chose was a strong word. He'd been naïve and trusted the judgement of others and had so little interaction with Noelle before their marriage that he'd given her no opportunity to show her true colors. Hindsight was a wonderful thing, in hindsight he knew that Noelle had been a bad seed, however he'd been complacent and gullible. If Noelle had been a model wife he'd still have been a fool blindly placing his future in the hands of others. If he hadn't underestimated how variable women of supposed good breeding could be he might have been more cautious. If she'd artfully deceived him throughout numerous meetings together then he could only blame her for tricking him to the altar. With his complete lack of interest in investigating his bride to be he had practically been asking for the dregs of society, what better opportunity to offload daughters who would otherwise end up old maids or disowned for a scandal? He'd do the very same with Althea now if she were old enough to marry off.

To answer Lestrange's question he'd had to admit that he had chosen her, even though he hadn't chosen Noelle as he now knew her to be. In this instance it would make him look better if he let Lestrange think he'd been deceived rather than made deception wholly unnecessary in the first place. "I did." His reply sounded a little terse - it was essentially an acceptance of responsibility. "She seemed like a good match and she was pretty enough." Neither had been enough to make up for her character.

Tiberius smiled darkly. It was good that Macmillan had chosen his own wife. Tiberius had no particular feelings about having arranged the marriage rather than going through the motions of courtship, provided it was something he had arranged himself and not a punishment inflicted on him from someone else — Tiberius had done the same thing with his own wife, of course, though with... unexpectedly mixed results. It was difficult to tell how a woman would turn out, apparently, when one selected her at fourteen.

"And now your tastes are more refined and your standards somewhat higher?" he asked with a chuckle. Tatiana was superior to Noelle in every way, obviously, and Tiberius didn't think it much of a secret.

"You could say that." He considered it less of a change in his tastes and more of a realization that what he needed in a wife wasn't as commonplace as he'd once thought. Apparently you couldn't just pluck a pretty debutante out of a crowd and trust her to be quality wife material.

Lestrange seemed to be more at ease to him now which was encouraging. "Although just 'somewhat' is an insult to your sister." Charles also chuckled now. It wasn't an attempt to ass kiss and curry favor, he'd simply been incapable of holding back a witty dig at his dead wife.

Tiberius took the comment less as an insult to Noelle and more as a compliment to Tatiana, but both were equally pleasing to him anyway. He offered a more genuine smile than he had so far in the conversation. "We are of one mind on that, rest assured," he said with a nod, before turning his attention to his cup and finishing it off. "Another drink?"
