Themis saw the possible collision course that Miss Wallace had inadvertently set them on. She also noted her own unsettling reaction to the idea of being Charley’s “new mum.” It had nothing to do with the child in question so much as it did her identity. Themis wasn’t certain while Charley’s reaction didn’t improve her feelings on the matter. How odd.
Trying to shake the mental cobwebs that began weaving into her thoughts, Themis firmly forced her attention back to Charley’s wardrobe. She also hadn’t forgotten about the rooftops. “That dress would be flattering. Perhaps that cut in different colors?”

"Not like I en't bloody colorful 'nuff myself," Charley huffed at the professor's comment. Both of her companions seemed allied against her now, she was not about to let them win. If there was such a demand to put her in a dress, she was going to stomp out their dreams with reality. A proper grey color would keep an urchin looking nicer for long, if she had to be after all, hiding any odd dirt or scuffs. She folded her arms, lifting her heels to turn away from the dresses entirely, "En't gonna be posing for a portrait, neither."

“You know, professor, a nice plain dress might look lovely when she is surrounded by flowers in her job.” She said thoughtfully. There was elegance in that, there was something inside Maggie that was really drawn to this, she had never had the opportunity to think of more than a couple of very cheap dresses, the idea of matching and outfit to a setting thrilled her in a special kind of way.
“How about that grey dress, with this around the waist?” she handed charley a ribbon which was pink, but in the softest way that it might be silver.

Whatever it took, Themis would nurture the friendship between Miss Wallace and Charley. The reluctant to be a witch seemed to understand the concept of societal norms. At minimum, Charley had a year of etiquette lessons to her name. Themis was certain this was all a show. Again, it would be Miss Wallace she would reward.
“Grey with several different belts and ribbons would be a clever idea Miss Wallace. It would make the outfit more versatile, but not exactly dedicated to roof climbing.” She directed that pointedly at her ward, a clear sign that the battle hadn’t even begun.

"'Round the waist? How's a girl s'posed ta breathe all cinched up like that?" The urchin rolled her eyes at all the fancy accessories she was meant to wear, dolling her up worse than the doily at the front of the shop. It wasn't like she didn't want to wear a dress, either, they sure looked nice...on others. Charley wasn't about to be walking around in all those stuffy layers without reason. She glanced across the store, eyes peeled for a shirt to go with the trousers her heart had picked out. "Gotta have something I can move in, y'know?"

"Just think of them as braces that go round the middle if you are worried." She giggled and gently tied a bow in the ribbon in front of her. I can't wait until I can cinch in my waist like the older girls. She put her hands where her waist was and pushed it in to try and give her young frame some semblance of an hourglass.
"Oh… I like this blouse, please try it on Charley." It was a blouse for a skirt but would look smart with a pair of trousers. Maggie had finally found a middle ground.

Themis didn’t hide her smirk. “It’s a ribbon; you know nothing of ‘cinched,’ girl.” If Charley was so worked up over ribbons, she was going to love corsetry. Themis was also finished having this discussion. Charley would have agency in her life, but she would also have guidance and sensible boundaries. “Miss Wallace is correct, again,” Themis added, her eyes amused. “And we will compromise: you may have the trousers, but you will be trying the dresses and at least a few day skirts.” And, firm but kinder, “If you want to be taken seriously, Charley, you learn to bend.”

"Thought it was against the rules for proper ladies bend over in a dress," Charley suggested, adding a snicker to her clever words when she turned away from the woman. Trying on a dress she could do, wearing one had a meaning, and a sort she was rather particular about. Charley took the ribbon from Maggie, rolling her eyes in the direction of the Professor in their private line of sight. Before picking up the dress, the urchin turned to ask, "How's a street urchin got a better idea of the 'do's and 'don't's than a posh lady of society?"

Maggie smirked at Charley when she enquired about a lady that bends. She's got you there, miss." She added. She knew what the professor meant and her tone was just of play. “A lady bends at the knees a, wh…” her eyes widened and she blushed almost forgetting she had been chided once before that that word was not one for polite company.
I'm going to try this one if I may. She disappeared behind the screen to try a pretty light purple dress with just a hint of faux whalebone in the middle. Charley, bring yours and come see!"
