APPEARANCE
A tragic platinum beauty with the delicate features of a wood sprite, Clue’s appearance is strange, scorned and unwanted in a boy. He is left-handed, light-footed, very slim and slight, no more than 4’11”. Clue’s eyes are medium grey, now icy, now savage, now still. His school uniform is old, worn, and overlarge.PERSONALITY
Clue doesn’t trust adults, the people who disturbed and neglected him. He doesn’t trust children, the people who hurt and reviled him. So that just about leaves animals — he likes those. But he will still talk to and mix with other people for reasons of experimentation and boredom, being eerie and troublesome enough to disturb them, but not enough to land him in deep water with professors. On rare occasions, Clue will feel genuinely intrigued by someone as a result of a shared interest in something like spiders, art, potions or chocolate; but making his first friend is still miles off.

HISTORY
Mercia Leverett gave birth in Blackpool’s open institution for volatile girls. When asked her baby’s name, she uttered “haven’t a clue”, and promptly expired. Clue was fostered by a maid, who sold him to a Coventry teacher, who left him with a London butcher, who got angry and locked him in a meat fridge. Clue didn’t die — he had magical power running through his veins. But his childhood remained cold and dark, as if he never left that meat fridge. He was assimilated by a batty foster mother called Mrs Spragg, who let the children run riot and fed them boiled potatoes on a good day. Clue looked like a girl and was punished by the other boys for it, becoming quick and agile as he dodged punch after kick. But one night there was no retreat as the ruffians closed in, jeering, spitting — and suddenly thrown back by an unknowable force. Clue had inadvertently performed powerful magic, and his fingers still tingled with it as he fled back to Mrs Spragg’s.
Clue often wondered if this extraordinary event was the cause of what followed. Clue, who could scarcely afford a penny lick, become enrolled in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry — all expenses paid. He never found out why, and never discovered who. But, as foreseen by his mysterious benefactor, Clue immediately showed great talent in spellwork, and his academic skills followed suit once the professors refined his self-taught literacy. Unfortunately his failures proved deeper than his successes: he never gained a friend, not a single one. The young Slytherin is strange, dark and isolated.
YOU LIKELY KNOW...
Clue is an utter oddball, you should probably stay away from him. He is prettier than most girls — that is odder still. He is also from a rough part of London. Again, stay away.
YOU MIGHT KNOW...
He grew up in foster homes, neglected and unwanted, the son of an unruly girl who died in childbirth and an unknown father. He is probably illegitimate. Even his blood status is a question mark.
YOU DON'T KNOW...
A butcher locked him in a meat fridge at a very early age, traumatising him for life.

September 1st, 1889 — The Great Hall, Slytherin table
Clue leaned forward onto narrow elbows, pale slim fingers entwined as he took a better look at the new First Years waiting to be Sorted. They looked lost, small and bewildered — for some of them that would never change. Clue was living proof of that. But he was curious about them, as were his fellow Slytherins, though some were twitching for the Sorting Ceremony to be over so they could tuck into the feast. Beneath the epic sunset in the star-studded sky of the Great Hall, Clue was not very hungry. Merely returning to Hogwarts — his only home — had quenched his every yearning. At least for now. @Irene Fudge |
