what's love got to do with it? |
1877 Before | It all starts when Miss Priscilla Eade, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eade, is caught in a compromising position with one Mr. Madoc Yarwood by her older sister. Mr. Yarwood, being already engaged to be married in a month, is thusly unavailable to marry Priscilla. Within a month, Priscilla's father arranges for her to marry one of his childless friends, who had lost both wife and first child to labor. The wedding comes two months later — long enough to confirm Priscilla is with child. The newlyweds spread the lie of being enamored with one another, trying to sell their elopement as genuine. |

1877 A Child is Born | Much to Eugene Bramer's disappointment, however, the child of the union is a girl. Still, he suggests she be named after him, to dissuade suspicions as much as can be that she might not actually be his child. There are those who gossip, of course, and their reputations suffer somewhat for it, but few doors close on them forever. |
1880 | It takes a while, though neither Eugene nor Priscilla is certain why, but eventually Priscilla falls pregnant again, this time producing a son, a trueborn son. Eugenia, three years of age, isn't fully aware of what this means for her. |
1884 | Eugenia's first act of magic is to set fire to her piano tutor's hair after he thwacks her hands for the fifth time in a minute because her small hands keep fumbling with the keys. |
1886 | In the woods on the Bramer estate in Kent, Eugenia encounters her first magical creature — fittingly for a young girl, she spies a unicorn through the trees. She watches the beast for several minutes before gathering the courage to approach. She is able to pet the unicorn, and spends near an hour with the creature, before the governess comes upon her, spooking the beast away. Thankfully, nothing bad happens to Eugenia, and the scolding she gets is mild, as the governess understands, to an extent, the fascination with unicorns. |
1889 | Finally, finally, Eugenia's Hogwarts letter arrives. Her mother takes her shopping personally, and for the first time, Eugenia gets the opportunity to bond with her mother. Eugenia's father purchases a townhouse in Wellingtonshire, Hogsmeade so that Eugenia doesn't have to travel so far at the end of the school year. |

1889-91 First Years | Upon sorting, to no one's general surprise, Eugenia is sorted into Hufflepuff. She is quick to befriend her housemates, as well as those beyond willing to have her. In these first years, she cares little for the boundaries of class, though she is quick to caution her working class friends that she might not be able to continue these friendships forever. |
1891-94 OWL Years | In preparation for her Ordinary Wizarding Levels exams, Eugenia signs up for the one additional class that has caught her attention — Care of Magical Creatures. She also joins the Music club choir as a soprano, and signs up for Music class as well. The additions to her schedule often see her neglecting her worst class — Astronomy — and getting less sleep than she really requires. Going into exams, this might backfire. In the summer of 1892, the man who raised her, for whom she was named, dies of illness, leaving his pocket watch to Eugenia, who still knows only him as her father. |
