Childhood |
1868 | Twins Araminta and Annabelle are born to the Scrimgeour family. Araminta is born first and often can be deemed quieter by the nannies. |
January, 1869 | Annabelle is kidnapped by muggles. Araminta, only being a baby at the time, notices no real difference. |
1873 | The difference she does notice is when big brother Julius is off to Hogwarts. Minty often asks nanny when he will be back and why can't she go? It becomes rather lonely, though other children from her social lot are arranged as playmates and the emptiness starts to lessen as time goes on. |
1875 | Minty's first act of magic isn't something spectacular or alarming. She notices the flowers in the parlor are starting to droop and feels rather sad about it, having helped pick them out. Suddenly, they brighten up and she gives a little gasp. With no one else in the room at the time, she is thrilled to rush off to find the governess and share this excellent news. |
An Education |
1880 | While sorting day is meant to be special, it was never meant to be this special. Minty was minding her business and waiting to be sorted like every other first year, when she spots an altogether too familiar of a face. A face that she had seen in the mirror more times than she could count. Tails of the long-lost twin were mentioned here and there at home, but this was beyond a shock. Whenever Minty looks back on it, she is amazed that she had not fainted there and then. Mother and father are informed promptly.
The majority of the family are hesitant after this discovery. Even Minty, though she works to maintain a friendly face. She tries to inform her twin of various family relations — especially after the death of their grandmother — and polite reminders of how a young lady of their status should act in various situations they come across while at school. Without fully meaning to, Minty tends to come off as pushy yet bubbly. |
Summer, 1881 | Minty is both familiar with — yet fearful of — her father's temper. Having always learned to keep her mouth shut and speak when spoken to, most times she was not subjected to said temper for long. Bella, however, was a different story entirely. Talking back, disobeying. It horrified and sent awe through Minty, though she tries to avoid showing the later thoughts by leaning into the horror. Whenever father is present, Minty begins to start avoiding being near her sister at all. |
1882 | Unlike her twin, Minty sticks to one elective. Like her twin, she ends up picking divination. So many of their peers pick the subject as the most ladylike and she sees no problem with this. What she does see a problem with is the fact that Bella seems to thrive in the class in a way that Minty never could. She's quiet about it, but it sets her teeth on edge. Often times, a compliment comes off as more insincere than she means it to, leaving her feeling rather guilty afterwards. |
1885 | If it weren't for Bella's continued academic interest, Minty would have tried to propose dropping NEWTs altogether in favor of finishing school. Yet she never speaks of this. Never wants to stir the pot. If she mentions it to father, they might not have a choice and Bella might hate her forever. If she even simply mentions it to Bella... how would she even react? Minty can never read her all that well sometimes, which is entirely frustrating. But she tries to keep up with a good sisterly relationship because it looks good. Because it would make Julius happy. Because Bella seems nice enough. But the girl could certainly drive her nuts.
Instead, she elects to take as few classes as possible and focus on the studies of those, socialization, and the few clubs that she had elected to join through her years at Hogwarts. Minty ends up choosing astronomy, history of magic, and charms. The first two because they seem to be the only ones that Bella isn't taking and Minty has thus decided that she needs some space, and charms because Bella seems to be taking everything and if they were to share any class charms seems especially fun for a socialite hosting parties and displaying fun spells. |
A Duo(?) Debut |
1887 | At first, Minty and Bella share a debut together, and Minty tries her best to help her sister get out and socialize with the ladies, along with hoping that Bella will meet a nice man that will make things easier for Minty to meet a nice man. Soon Minty finds herself the only debutante in the house when Bella is off to live with their aunt. Minty has mixed emotions of frustration and relief. Her season is further given distance from her sister when Bella drops the society life for one as a healer. Does the girl have to do everything?!
Apparently, Bella does have to do everything. Being at Aunt Laverna's house sees Bella back in certain social events with their cousin, actually socializing and enjoying herself. What had Minty done wrong? How was she never good enough to help Bella out of her shell? |
1888 | Because Aunt Laverna lets Bella get away with anything it seems. According to Witch Weekly, anyway. The first issue leads Araminta to a startled gasp in the parlor. Too noticeable to play off, she lets her father know of the incident that made her act in such a way, showing the damning article. She is informed that she must show him any more immediately should there be any. Guilt courses through her, but fear is her driving force. She doesn't want her father's temper to be aimed at her. Rather the sister who isn't even in the house. The sister that might need a good stern letter to stop this nonsense at once.
But the nonsense does not stop. More articles and rumors plague the family, ending with father having enough and confronting Bella. Before Minty can process any of this, father is being arrested and Bella is nowhere to be found. What are they going to do? Especially after father dies in Azkaban. Dies a criminal. The family Scrimgeour flee to the countryside home. |
Fractured Pieces |
1889 — 1892 | Despite being a social creature, Minty is resigned to keeping her head down. Scandal like this leaves a scar and there are times that Araminta envies Julius's freedom in a way that she will never be able to possess. She will always have Annabelle's face. Her clothes might be drastically different, her voice unmistakably hers, but her face is Bella. She tries to make the best of things. Keeping up with her hobbies and taking on new ones. She refuses to breed any animal, for fear that it would seem like a defeat and quiet send off to spinsterhood. Her friends often get letters, and as the mourning period cools down there are even calls for tea. No public events. No... suitors. She would be married by now if it weren't for the scandal, she was sure of it. Yet she tries to keep outwardly positive. Making the best of things. Being friendly. Often giving gifts to friends of the many crafts that she has found the time to make. |
1893 | Minty is desperate to make a new go of things. Scared of entering spinsterhood and worried that her face and family scandal will keep her from building the life that she had been raised to. Part of her wants to just ask Julius to arrange something, but another part of her wants to try to find a husband on her own. Make her own way back into society. The inner conflict is grating, and she finds herself relying heavily on the friends that stayed in touch to help her transition. |
