With dark chestnut waves that fall softly over her shoulders, Gemma has a very approachable appearance and is very much her mother's daughter. Her eyes are a dark hazel and while she only reaches just under five feet at the moment, and keeping. Gem's a natural beauty, though she hardly ever plays it up. She does not think she is as beautiful as Kathleen, but never really pays it much attention. She most often dresses her boyish figure in Hogwarts robes and wears whatever she is given at home. The dresses are usually very pretty, but Gem prefers simple ones in brighter colors to match her personality. She is right handed.
Born the last child and second girl to Bernard and Delilah Simpson, she had an unusually difficult labor that would set the tone for her personality later in life. Gemma was just over a year old when Bernard divorced her mother and had no concrete memories of her. Of course she was cared for mostly by a nanny anyway, even after Bernard married Cadence the following summer.
Gemma grew up in a big household, Bernard and Cadence added three more children to the Simpson household, in addition to Gemma and her four siblings. Gemma was only three when Laoise was born, but she was thrilled to finally have a sister she could play with. The two were very close growing up, Gemma having nicknamed her sister Lee after having trouble pronouncing her real name. They played together constantly and it made Gem sad to know that Lee was only her half-sister and not her actual sister like Kathleen, but they got along so well she didn't think of it often. The addition of Matthias and Goliath did not surprise her, however the addition of little Bernie did. While Gemma did not understand it at the time, her father had children out of wedlock and as she grew, she came to realize what that meant.
In spite of always being treated fairly by Cadence, as if she belonged to her father's second wife, Gemma had a hard time accepting little Bernie into the family and does not treat him the same way she does her other half-brothers and while she's not mean to the toddler, she just chooses to ignore him when she's home.
Just after her eleventh birthday Gemma received her Hogwarts letter, as they came out in July anyway and was brought to purchase her wand and an owl, a tiny red Eastern Screech Owl she named Boo. Once at Hogwarts she was immediately sorted into Gryffindor where she felt extremely comfortable. It was here at school that she found the courage to finally seek out her birth mother. With an owl of her own and her family far away and in different houses, Gem was able to pen a letter and send Boo on the hunt for her mom. It took a few months but before Christmas in her first year a letter and a present arrived for her. She left both at school over the holidays, but the tiny statuette of a Pegasus sits on her nightstand beside her bed at school and is safely hidden away in her trunk while she is at home. Delilah and Gemma have been in contact for several years now, but only while Gemma is at school; she does not want her family to know she is in contact with the woman his father divorced for the most ridiculous of reasons, in Gemma's eyes. She is determined that her mother was wronged and when she went home after her first year at school the relationship she had with her family changed entirely. While she cannot tell anybody about her correspondence with her mother, Gem wishes she could meet her mother and get to know her better.
In her years at Hogwarts, Gemma has grown into a full-blown Gryffindor. She does fairly well in her academics and likes to socialize. If she didn't fear disownment and if there wasn't a ban on quidditch, she may have gone for a position on her house team, but instead roots rather enthusiastically for them from the stands at every game. She follows professional quidditch very quietly as that is not a pastime fit for a young lady. Gem likes to toe the line of propriety, occasionally crossing it entirely if the situation strikes her as adventurous. Though she has never earned herself a detention, Gem has come close a few times. In her third year she added Care of Magical Creatures and Divination as her electives, just because she could. School does not come easily to her, but she does enough to get good grades, though nowhere near Kathleen's standards, Gem's not entirely focused on school. When she graduates she wants to meet her mother and possibly work for the ministry.
