This would have been very disturbing anyway but then Pet's eye popped out and started rolling along the bottom of the boat. Great. Maybe she would be so fortunate as to have a kraken surface nearby and pluck her off the ship with one of its tentacles and kindly drown her. Petra Sleptova in Land, Ho!

{SWP 9} Nancy Drew: The Pub Possibility
#1

January 24th, 1890 — The Nutty Knut, Pennyworth

The pub is bright and boisterous, though smaller than those found on the High Street, as you step inside, relishing the warmth the hearth exudes in comparison to the crisp January evening on the other side of the door.

You had taken an interest in the Artifact Incidents (as they have been reported in the Daily Prophet, not to be confused with hospital wards of the same name) from the off, quietly ferreting out details whenever you could. Much of your efforts have been fruitless thus far, but you've heard a man has been running his mouth at what's normally a quaint, respectable Pennyworth public house.

A description probably would have helped, you think to yourself as you cast your eyes about the room.

WHAT DO YOU DO?
a. Sit by yourself in a corner
b. Approach the barkeep
c. Approach a blonde man at the table nearest the fire
d. Approach the dark-haired man at the table nearest the door

It had been more for curiosity if nothing else. There was also the fact that this may give Henry more experience in hunting down the truth and hopefully help her in her search for her brother. Something that always seems to consume her thoughts as of this moment. Not that this keeps her from doing her jobs. What an odd thing to think of having two vastly different careers. What an interesting story this would make for any children she may have someday. If she ever has any time to find love one day.

For now she was searching. A lead had finally made its way to her. Though not knowing what the man looked like was certainly not helpful. But knowing a pub well enough in theory, it seemed that the barkeep typically seemed to know everything. So he was her first stop in the area. "Excuse me sir, have you seen a rather... chatty fellow lurking in here today?" She asked in a polite tone. Be demanding of the matter, and no one would be willing to answer any of your questions. Henry knew that from experience.

"Sorry, Miss," the bartender answers with an apologetic smile, "but I've only just started for the day. Perhaps one of the other patrons might be of more use?"

a. Sit by yourself in a corner
b. Push the barkeep for more
c. Approach a blonde man at the table nearest the fire
d. Approach the dark-haired man at the table nearest the door

It wasn't an answer Henrietta was pleased with, but arguing on the matter would get her no where. Excusing herself with a polite farewell, she decided to sit by herself for a moment and analyze the room, with a few glances to the bartender in case the man was up to something.

As you step into the public house, you're keenly aware that this is the life you could have had—would have had. You can't quite place the feeling that rolls over you at this realization, but you tuck it away for now.

Of late, you've developed a keen interest in curses and their ilk. While you've not
actively sought out anything you shouldn't, this practically fell into your lap: a walk through the park allowed you opportunity to eavesdrop, and the information you gleaned has led you here.

WHAT DO YOU DO?
a. Approach the young woman alone in the corner.
c. Approach a blonde man at the table nearest the fire
d. Approach the dark-haired man at the table nearest the door

Her parents had never allowed them to visit the pub, not even on Hogsmeade weekends when all students would trip into one of other of the hogsmeade establishments for butter beer, or to socialise away from the watchful eyes of the teachers. When she had moved in with Ana, it had been made very clear to her that good middle class girls didn't frequent public houses, but it couldn't be helped. the last few months had been spent bent over books and texts, it was like being back in school - and Ana hadn't been impressed by the way she had seemed to sleep walk through her social obligations, but the truth was her heart wasn't truly in it anymore. She didn't think she wanted this, or at least not a truly sedentary life of social duties. She wanted more, no needed more. When she had heard about the cursed objects it had felt like destiny! the universe telling her that she should do something more than just keep a house.

But the bar was as far as her information led her, it had just menioned...'someone'. the girl in the corner she sort of recognised, a ladies maid, and a girl a few years a head of her at school. She had been in Maggies year, or near enough. She didn't seem a likely candidate. There were two gentleman sitting separately and alone. The gentleman by the door seemed much more like he was waiting for someone - he seemed a better target, and...he was closest to her.

'Excuse me sir?' Maddie greeted, and ducked her head a little so he would know she was addressing him, 'I don't suppose you're here about those cursed artifacts?' she ventured, hoping desperately that getting involved in all of this hadn't been a horrid mistake.

Maddie has recently returned from the social season in Moscow, and living with a middle class Russian family.
Her inheritance is common knowledge.

You break from your reverie at the address, an unfamiliar woman looking at you hopefully. How she could have known you had an interest in the artifacts is beyond you—what strange kismet!

So far, his day had been rather uneventful. He had finished up work and decided to head to a good, cheap pub for some dinner. If he was lucky, someone might have some information concerning those artifacts he kept hearing about.

Upon entering the establishment and ordering, he took up a spot near the door, so as to afford himself the best view of all the patrons, and hopefully to allow for some discreet eavesdropping. He had watched various persons come and go, but two individuals stood out in particular, both young women.

The first had marched deliberately up to the barkeep and demanded to know if a certain shady character had entered that day, to which he had answered in the negative. She had then went to sit by herself and as far as he could tell, hadn't stirred a muscle.

The other young woman however, had looked rather bewildered and out of her element the moment she stepped in the door. She looked around as if searching for someone, anyone she might recognize; and to his surprise, her gaze settled on him. As she nodded toward him, Ulysses was sure that she had been mistaken. Regardless, his manners goaded him to stand, bow slightly, and offer her a chair. After hearing her question however, he began to get rather excited, as he had finally met someone who might be able to help him in his search.

"I-I'm sorry, miss. But I have no more information concerning those artifacts than has been widely rumored. I am however, very interested in finding these curious devices, and would love to aid you in your search. Will you sit and discuss with me what information you have so far gathered? It is plain to see that you do not regularly frequent this establishment, therefore you must have been led here by some tidbit."
