People Watching...

Maddie was bored - normally a public ball offered a chance for a dance, and a few good conversations.  Tonight though...the people were shallow and boring and the dancing was scant and lifeless.  The most interesting conversation she had had thus far had been about the source of some English pointwork on the dress front of an matronly woman sat at the side of the dance hall.  It wasn't exactly thrilling - and she missed Moscow dearly.  Aside from how comfortable she felt there, and the lack of judgement she faced, it had also been so glittering and beautiful that Hogsmeade hall seemed somehow small in comparison - but a friend of Ana's was hosting this particular get together and they were expected as good friends to show up and add to the society of the occasion.

She was trying her very hardest to circulate and be a social butterfly, difficult for a young woman used to being seen and not heard. Indeed the mark of the perfect woman she had been raised to aspire to was a silent, graceful, statute -not the bubbling coquet, especially when her own personality ran to quiet observation and wit rather than bubbling flattery. The result was that she wasn’t finding it easy to adapt to that norm. She tried, and had made real effort but it certainly didnt come naturally.

That was why, during this, as with many balls – she was stood at the edge of the dance floor watching the festivities and the swirl of dancers  More interested in watching than taking part.

While Miss Bearegard’s rejection had been disappointing, Percy had found it oddly enlightening. Since Maggie he had thought that he was better off alone. That he would find no one who would fit into his life like she would have, their friendship (and what he had felt was love) could not be replicated. It had, therefore, surprised him to find himself feeling similarly toward Miss Beauregard. In the subsequent months it had forced Percy to the realization that he did indeed want to settle down and have a family.

He had not told his sisters of his ill-fated attempts at courting as he felt that it might incite them to greater attempts to make a match for him. If he were to settle down he was certain of one thing - he would do it his way. If Cat had noticed he seemed to approach her attempts to have him accompany her to social events had become less of an ordeal she said nothing. Instead she merrily invited him along as if everything were precisely the same, which Percy appreciated. That being said being at events was still not a comfortable ordeal at all - but where else did one go to find a wife?

This evening Cat’s friend was hosting an event, what it was about Percy couldn’t recall, but the turn out was not entirely overwhelming but he supposed it could still be considered a good turn out. Dancing had begun and Cat was giving him a look that he was very well acquainted with - go talk with someone - it said. Leaving Percy to scan the room for a potential partner. He had been dragged to enough of these to know most faces, if not the names, although he rarely bothered to find an introduction to anyone, so when he spotted a young lady he had not yet seen, he decided that perhaps she might be someone to approach.

Taking a glass of champagne from the tray of a servant, Percy downed it to fortify himself, then he approached the young woman, taking care to walk carefully with the cane. The damnable thing prevented him from dancing, but at least not from conversing. But what would she see in him? A hobbled old man with nothing to offer. The anxieties began to whisper to him as he approached her. Nothing could be gained if nothing were attempted, Percy reasoned. He couldn’t turn back now, he was already by her side. “Good evening, miss.” Percy bowed as best he could with his cane before looking at her with at attempt at a smile.

Maddie was watching a young couple bicker on the edge of the dancefloor - while trying desperately to seem as though they were not fighting.  If Maddie's recollection of Witch Weekly was correct they were only recently married yikes perhaps she might be better off perusing the avenue of changing her name, using her grandfathers surname, take her inheritance and be done with it. The idea of being trapped with someone who hated you, or who had been married for convenience seemed like her idea of hell.

She was rather lost in the conversation she imagined between them; her accusations, his defences, or perhaps she had been dancing with the wrong person - a long standing family feud she had blundered into - although likely the real reason was as mundane as him stepping on her dress and ripping the trim.

A smile tugged her lips at the thought as a gentleman appeared at her shoulder and greeted her.  Turning she gave a curtsying nod to the man.  She sort of recognised him, his sister had been a year or two ahead of her at school although they hadn't particularly known one another.  'Good evening Sir', her last year in Moscow meant she was approaching much of this season as a complete newcomer - there were few people beyond those she had gone to school with she had recognised.

'Miss Madeleine Backus' her chaperon, the portly woman who was nurse to Ana's children spoke up from beside her by way of introduction.  Maddie gave another curtsey.  The womans duty complete for the moment she sat back down and went back to her sewing.  Ana had required her to attend since she would be required to do other social duties and wouldn't be there to provide Maddie with introductions.

From behind the young lady a woman introduced her, seemingly bored with the whole affair as she sat down to her knitting. It was chaperons like her that had made Percy the ideal chaperon for his sisters, he was well aware of that fact. Disinterested chaperon aside, the young woman was pretty, and he was surprised by how demure she was. Most ladies with her looks would be making small talk the moment she had been introduced.

Mister Percival Adlard at your service. A pleasure to make your acquaintance, Miss Backus.” Again Percy bowed. These were the types of decorum that society expected of them and yet in his thirty some odd years he had still not found it in himself to actually feel comfortable with them.

I would offer you a dance,” Percy gestured down at his cane to explain, “But I do hope you won’t mind some company instead?

If Maddie had been able to hear his thoughts she might have blushed prettily and been heartily flattered, as it was when he introduced himself she recognized the name - she had indeed known his sister although never met the brother that she had spoken off in letters from home. He had a kind face, angular and handsome but with a softness around his eyes that was unexpected.

'I can assure you sir, that company is much more preferable to dancing' she indicated the floor which was crowded with swirling silks and taffeta. 'Especially in this case.' It looked claustraphobic, and Maddie could feel the excessive heat and smell the sweat from here. 'Sometimes public balls are far from tolerable on that account.' she said with a small smile. It was a polite acknowledgement of the fact that a gentleman couldn't dance but also the truth. Maddie danced when she had to, but preferred to dance with friends at small house parties, play cards, or games. 'My own personality does not lend itself to wading into the fray' she let out a light laugh, she lowered her voice conspiratorially 'so any excuse not to be forced into dancing would be entirely appreciated'. She pointed to Ana, the beautiful and vivacious Russian woman was dancing gaily with her husband but looking pointedly at Maddie indicating her expectation that she should be dancing as well 'My guardian is well intentioned but we differ immensely on what we find pleasurable.' She knew that speaking to a gent would get Ana off her back.

In Percy’s experience not many young women would say they preferred anything to dancing. The last exception to this observation had been Miss Beauregard, and thus gave Percy hope that there might be more to this young lady than he had at first expected.

Agreed, I’ve always found conversation in a less crowded place to me more enjoyable.” Percy nodded, thinking of in years past when he’d been forced to make conversation while leading a woman along in the steps of a dance. Lissy had always assured him it was delightful for a young woman but more often than not Percy had found himself tongue tied and appearing wanting in the eyes of the young woman. Conversation, while not entirely his comfort zone either, was much easier when he wasn’t trying to remember not to step on a lady’s foot.

Percy’s hope was bolstered even more when she mentioned her personality, a comment he could only take as her being shier than expected. Which, Percy had to admit, came as a welcome relief. “I’m happy to be of service then.” Agreed amiably, feeling more at ease now. Was it too much to hope he had found a Miss Beauregard again? While he knew he could not replace her she had often set him at ease during events like this, he’d miss that aspect of their friendship.

Ah, I see. And if she enjoys dancing, what do you enjoy Miss Backus?” Percy was grateful to find that he wasn’t stumbling over his words this time. In fact it rather felt like he had found his sea-legs, so to speak.
