6'1", fair of hair, Wes inherited his mother's sandy blonde hair and clear blue eyes. He is tall for the time, but the Irish are known to be lanky. He's filled out from his years of playing quidditch, strong muscles still, even though he doesn't play much any more. He is naturally right-handed; he is capable of playing quidditch with both hands, being a chaser during his playing time. He has a few good scars from playing, nothing too major, but he broke his femur in a game, so he walks with a bit of a limp. Generally athletic in appearance, he is tan and burly, but mostly a big teddy bear. His wardrobe mostly consists of team-related paraphernalia, though he has a few nice suits and robes for functions and important meetings. Wesley now walks with a cane and a significant limp after both the severe quidditch injury and a secondary injury during a quidditch protest.
Born the third child second son to an upper class Irish family living in Galway on the western coast of the isle, Wesley grew up very much a mama's boy. He was the middle of the eventual five children. They lived in a comfortable country estate, his father running a successful brewery and his mother making her living as seamstress for something to do. She didn't have to work considering her husband made more than enough money, but Eileen Cavanaugh had always instilled a sense of hard work in her children. Just because they didn't have to do something didn't mean they couldn't. They were a privileged family, but they didn't have to be snobby about it.
Wes displayed his first sign of magic at age 9, a little late for most kids, but he was being taught to play quidditch by his older brother and fell off his broom. He kept himself levitated long enough to right himself and land on his feet. Ainsley and Daniel were already at Hogwarts and he couldn't wait to get there himself.
Unfortunately, with a September 2nd birthday, Wes was almost a full year older than most of his classmates when he did enter school. He was sorted into Slytherin, not for his cunning, but his pure stubborn Irish nature. He was determined from a young age to play professional quidditch and just barely scraped by in classes, doing just well enough to stay on the quidditch team. He excelled in arithmacy, having the natural disposition for numbers. He could tick off numbers and money like it was nobody's business, he was not so good at charms or transfiguration, earning a T in both on his OWLs. Fortunately he was good enough at quidditch to be drafted for the Appleby Arrows and play as one of their second string chasers before taking over the spot of first string a year after his graduation.
Life was good for Wes, having graduated, playing professional quidditch and he was courting a young girl named Molly Shanahan. The two were getting serious and he couldn't ask for more. He was nineteen and invincible. Unfortunately, things were not meant to last as the Cavanaugh children were hit with hard news the year his youngest brother entered Hogwarts. All of the children were either grown or at school and their parents were at home in their Galway estate, finally with an empty nest. They had been planning to take a nice long vacation for themselves. But before they could leave, a group of serial thieves broke into their home and when Brian tried to defend his wife, the two were attacked and did not survive. The Cavanaugh siblings were shocked. Only his two elder siblings and himself had graduated, three of their brothers and sisters were still in school and suddenly they were parents. Daniel, Ainsley and Wesley worked together to make sure that Collin, Cian and Birgit were well provided for, which wasn't hard considering they were left an entire estate.
They picked up the pieces and moved on. Wesley was so scattered that things with Molly ended up going south, the two of them leaving the courtship amicably. He couldn't give her what she wanted and it was too hard for him to focus on his career and his family, plus Molly. Things got better as time went on and Wes played solidly for the Arrows for five more years when his career was ended by a leg shattering injury that left his left hip displaced, his pelvic bone fractured in several places and his femur broken in two. It left him on the injured list for the rest of that year and unfortunately he didn't give in enough time to heal correctly, so he was left with a permanent limp and no spot on the team. Instead he went to work for the Department of Magical Games and Sports, refereeing and coaching for a couple of years before making Assistant Head at 26 and then Department Head at age 28. He's been the department head for two years now and has mostly managed to get his life and career back in line.
He currently lives in Hogsmeade, having moved there after his got the job as department head. He owns a small house in Wellingtonshire, which is a messy bachelor pad. All of his siblings are grown and have lives of their own, but Collin and Cian both live with him part time.
loud, crass, a bit of a brute, rough manners, goofy, good-natured, typical Irish temper, swears like a sailor, likes to laugh, doesn't take much seriously, organized, good head for money and numbers, family-oriented, stubborn, pig-headed.
