    An Evening Stroll
    #1
A letter was on the table when Percy returned to his darkened home. Anna, his housekeeper, must have left for the evening, he noted. Percy hadn’t realized how late he was. He had buried himself in paperwork at the office today and hadn’t noticed the passing of time until everyone had left his department. From the other room Percy could heard Lily’s claws as they clattered against the wooden floors in excitement to greet her master. She skittered into the room and jumped up to Percy’s knees, with a chuckle Percy greeted the dog, scratching behind her ears as he reached for the parchment. He recognized Felicity’s looping handwriting immediately and scanned over the contents with an annoyed eye. It wasn’t that he didn’t want a letter from his sister, it was just that lately they held a constant stream of summons and complaints from his father. With a sigh Percy placed the letter down and knelt down next to Lily to rub her neck and ears, “Looks like I’ll have to leave you alone again old girl. Duty calls.” Oblivious to his words Lily jumped up, placing a paw on his chest and licking his face. Percy shook his head and stood again, placing his hat on his head and leaving once more. At least the walk through a twilight lit Bartonburg was a pleasant enough stroll and would give him time to clear his mind and enjoy his solitude.

Dorothea Potts did not garden (although she would have liked to.) None of her branch did, which was why she had gone to The Florist Potts with Fletch to pick up some flowers. She tailed her brother on the walk back, coming to a stop after she almost collided with a man and a dog.

Lily would not be left behind. She scampered around Percy's knees until he sighed and placed a leash around her neck and led her outside into the evening air. Following the pleasant path he had become use to over the past several years since he had moved to Hogsmeade from London. In some ways living in London had been easier for the young man who had not been expected at Sunday dinners or to drop by on a whim of his family's.

Percy's modest home was rather closer to High Street than his father's house in North Bartonshire, a fact that his father rather resented. In Percival Senior's opinion his son was rather muddled in the brain for living in an establishment that was not reflective of his own means. Percy for his part was rather proud of his home - and his brains! After all he saw little reason to waste his income, however well it might be, on a home when he had little to support beyond himself. It wasn't as if he would move in with his old man either, while the Adlard's were an established and comfortablely middle class family, Percy did not think that he could handle returning his life to the abode of his father - an argument that reoccurred every few weeks. It seemed little to matter that Percy and his father simply did not enjoy each other as people, but that their status was at sake with Percy living much below his own means.

The man was so distracted by these thoughts that he hardly noticed the couple traveling on the path around the corner from him until it was too late. Lily yanked at the leash, nearly tugging it from Percy's hands as she noticed the new scent. Percy, usually much more attentive when Lily came will him, had relaxed into thinking that his puppy had grown more well trained over the years. "Lily!" He scolded the King Charles, yanking her back from the young lady just in time. Lily was just as bad as Mrs. Smith and the lifts at work it seemed -forcing him into a position to once again apologize and create small talk. Inwardly he sighed, outwardly he forced an apologetic smile to his lips. "Are you alright miss?" Percy was glad for the cooling air and the twilight, both helping to keep his cheeks from turning a noticeable shade of pink. "I do apologize, she gets quite excited when she gets to meet new people." As if on cue Lily pranced up to the young woman and circled her, tail wagging eagerly in anticipation of getting even more attention.

AWW PERCIVAL'S DOG IS THE SAME KIND AS MINE
Dot would have been more startled by the dog had she not been so small; as it was, she beamed and bent down to ruffle the creature's ears. "I'm grand," she said cheerfully. It helped that the man was handsome, but even if he hadn't been, Dot really liked dogs.

She stood up again. "Really, you're perfectly fine - she's adorable."

The lady seemed unbothered by Lily who was happily soaking up the attention as the lady knelt down to pet her ears just the way she liked them. Percy shook his head at the attention seeking creature. The lady did seem okay though, her tone cheerful as she replied, he smiled in response noticing that the words seemed more focused on the dog then on him. That was quite alright with Percy.

Ahead of them on the sidewalk a man shifted his weight and watched them, Percy sighed with relief, not as awkward as it could be then. At least the young woman had an escort with her. While he had two sisters and sometimes found such social conventions bothersome, he could not argue that in his increasing age he did see the necessity for such things. Or perhaps it was because he escorted his own sister around so much.

The lady straightened up and looked at Percy, she was quite pretty, and likely around Felicity’s age. But what struck Percy was her own admiration of his dog. Some ladies were prone to disgust or annoyance when faced with such a creature. Percy smiled, “Don’t say that too loud, she already has quite a high opinion of herself.” He shook his head in amusement taking a step forward to shorten his hold on Lily’s leash. “Don’t you girl?” He asked the puppy as if she too were a participant of the conversation. Maybe his sisters were right - maybe he did need to socialize with real people more as he had just spoken to his dog as if she were a human in the presence of two complete strangers. What had become of his life? Percy wondered as he felt the mild warmth of his cheeks.

Dot eyed the stranger with bemusement, not sure if she should find him funny or be a little disturbed. His dog was very cute, but he was also talking to her - was this something that dog people just did?

"I've been trying to talk my mother into letting us have a dog," she offered instead, "But she remains unconvinced."

The young lady before Percy seemed rather young, he'd place her around Felicity's age. Perhaps a year or two younger. He could still remember when he had been younger and longing for a puppy. Had it not been for hunting dogs his father had insisted on Percy was quite sure his mother would never have tolerated a dog in their home, Percy had never questioned that she might not approve of such a creature joining the family ranks.

"They are such fine companions, I find it hard to believe one might object." Percy replied solemnly as he kept his gave on the young woman and half an eye on his own rather rambunctious puppy.

"Well some people find a way, surely," she said, standing up finally. Her brother, Dot was sure, would start to get antsy - this was not supposed to be an extended walk back from The Florist Potts.
