Octavia has misjudged the timing of the start of the operetta that was on that night, so her attempt at being twenty minutes fashionably late and getting to switch on all the lights in the box she had rented just so everyone could see her hadn’t worked. In fact, she was forty minutes early, and she couldn’t even get to the box yet.

She had meandered out into the landing on the first floor, where people were milling around and buying their drinks and opera glasses, and went over to the railing around the great staircase, watching the people ascending the first floor. The best seats were up here, after all, not that you’d have known it by the appearance of the people coming through the door.

“Good god, what a simply hideous dress!” Octavia exclaimed quite genuinely to a person near by her, looking as shocked at the arrival of a woman in a dress that looked like it was only made out of hazardous yellow tassels as she would have if a vampire had walked in carrying his latest victim as a mid-opera snack.
