    Missing Moonlights

"Then stay and watch me die," Lou responded, his voice barely more than a series of stunted breaths and half-gasps at this point. He was being a little cruel, and he knew it, but he didn't have time to be otherwise. It would take Theo time to go and find their father--who was, presumably, somewhere else in this wilderness, also looking for Lou. It would take time to get him back, and then he'd have to make the decision to try and patch Lou up on the spot or whether to bring him back to the study. Lou was feeling dizzy at the moment, from the blood loss, but he didn't feel that he was presently in danger, either from his wounds or from his surroundings. He could survive long enough to get his father on the scene, he was fairly confident, but he wasn't sure he'd be able to stay conscious that entire length of time if his brother's absence was proceeded with a long, careful chat in which Lou painstakingly enumerated all of the reasons it would be better for Theo to leave. He didn't have time to convince him--he just needed Theo to go, and jumping to the worst case scenario seemed like the fastest way to get him onto the same page.

"Go on," Lou said, as authoritatively as he could when he wasn't capable of speaking much louder than a whisper.

It didn't seem quite fair to him what Lou had said, but it did its job in convincing Theo to leave his brother unattended, even if it was only very reluctantly that he did so and not without ample paranoia. He stood up again and look down at his older brother, the anguish clear on his face for all to see. "Fine. But you'd better not do anything stupid, like die while I'm gone." He lingered for a moment so that he might add, "I'll forgive you dying once but not twice." With that, he turned and ran off. Time was of the essence.
