    Self Defence [Intro DADA]

Watching the antics of her yearmates, Molly only barely smothered a laugh. She wasn't sure whose misfortune was funnier, her yearmates' or their victims, but she was content to stay out of the line of literal fire for now!

The older Hufflepuff boy cast a tickling charm, and Molly shouted "Protego!" in response.

Taking a step forward to face one of the younger students, Constance took in a deep breath, and raised her wand. "Flipendo!" she cast. Maybe this year she'd do better with her class participation, step out of the shadows for once.

Of course Meta Lestrange would be the one to get in trouble and cost points for Gryffindor. Their first meeting had not gone well and Maddy still did not like her housemate, and so she considered this to be par for the course in spite of the fact that it had never actually happened before.

Determined to show that not all Gryffindors were brash, she faced off against the Slytherin girl and cast the prescribed shield charm.

"What are you laughing at?" Meta demanded irritably from the older girl. Her fire conjuring spell hadn't even worked, so she couldn't see why Professor Sleptov had to make such a big deal out of it! Wasn't this class supposed to be about dueling people?

"Protego!" she said in a most passive aggressive tone at a Hufflepuff girl's attack.

Quote:Sisse was entirely sure that dueling was lady like, but the idea of it was exciting. Most of their other classes required one to be quiet and still, something she could oblige, however, she was grateful for the change of pace. She stood up from her seat and squared her shoulders readying for the duel. The second year, she thought he was in a Hufflepuff, aimed his wand at her. “Protego.” Sisse murmured, remembering the motion just in time to throw a shield up in front of her, a frown crossing her lips. It wasn’t as easy as Professor Sleptov made it appear.

Yet again, not a single first year successfully managed a shield charm, though at least Miss Potts had the sense to duck out of the way before she caught fire. With a shallow sigh, the professor moved to extinguish the chair that had not been so lucky.

“First years! More feeling! More determination!” he demanded of them.

“More usefulness,” Elijah mocked as he turned to his next target, casting a wary glance at the Russian to ensure he had not heard. Elijah Urquart might have been a shit, but he was a shit with the sense to be intimidated by Professor Sleptov.

    Flippendo!”

Ugh, the Urquart boy was all too full of himself! She wore a look of determination that might have been annoyance if she hadn't found him sorta cute. She held up her wand and cast the shield charm in response.

After recovering from his run-in with the psychopathic Slytherin, Cameron turned his attention on a less troublesome student and, wearing a reassuringly friendly expression, cast: "Locomotor mortis!"

Quote:Sisse’s cheeks colored as Professor Sleptov scolded them. She wasn’t use to being scolded on matters of school unless it was for a lack of attentiveness. She turned and found herself face to face with the boy from the potatoes incident. She had noticed him in the class but had rather hoped to avoid him. Afterall, he was rather cute. Her cheeks turned even redder, even her ears felt warm. How embarrassing if she failed at this spell as well. “Protego!” She tried to state more firmly. Not quickly enough, despite the kind look on his face, Sisse felt his spell hit her firmly as her body went rigid and she hit the floor quite sure her whole face was as red as a cherry.

His sighs grew more and more audible as the first years continued to fail—until Miss Thompsett’s efforts finally proved successful.

“Five points to Gryffindor, Miss Thompsett,” the professor offered the young witch encouragingly. “Keep at it!”

Cammie was glad that a Gryffindor had earned points by shielding against him. He realized there were ways around the point of the competition, would wouldn't take advantage of them. He turned his attention to another student of a different house and cast: "Flipendo!"

Taking a deep breath, Constance turned to face a member of a different house than she had prior, and cast the same spell. "Flipendo!" She felt that sticking to one particular incantation would keep things simple enough for her, and she didn't feel like trying anything too new to her. Save that for later on in the year.

Holly was getting frustrated. She'd done so well her first try, so why wasn't she doing well now? She'd held up against fourth-year Miss Lestrange, so why shouldn't she hold up against these stupid second years?

She could even feel her wand beginning to grow frustrated with the lack of work it was producing. When she shot back "Protego!" against Miss Huntingtower's spell, sparks even flew from it!

She bit her lip, annoyed that nothing had worked so far. Gripping her wand tighter, she spun to face the sound of a casted spell. She was fairly certain that this wasn't the first time she had faced this second year, but she wasn't all too sure - faces hadn't been her priority. "Protego!" she blurted out, flipping her wand out towards the boy.

This time, it was Miss Potts who was successful—Nikolai dutifully awarded her house five points. This time, and the last time, as it seemed their hour was almost up.

“We will move on from this next class,” the professor informed the class as he got their attention once more. “Those of you who were not steadily successful, your homework is to practice the shield charm some more. Those of you who were, consider yourselves awarded a free pass to focus on your other studies this evening. You are dismissed!”
