    Life of the party
    Open Thread
Nate had picked his way through the party goers and found a calmer spot by a window.  He felt like more of an observer than a participant in the festivities. He supposed he should ask one of the girls with out a partner to dance, it was the proper thing to do, but he felt no compulsion. His only job tonight was to see his sister shuttled around the room when she wasn't dancing.

He watched her take the hand of yet man and reached for a drink from a tray making its way around.  Now that she was out it was time to find her a husband. Which strange in a way Nate couldn't quite put his finger on.

Fucking Clarence.  He should have been here for this.  But no, it was down to Nate.  Somehow. It was all on him now.Which was strange in several such specific ways Nate could list them if anyone cared to ask. And did Clarence decide to come home when Horatio went missing?  No. Nate took a drink, trying not think that it had almost been a week with no word, no ransom demand.  Horatio was gone and no one knew anything.

He blinked and realized someone had addressed him and he hadn't heard any of it "I'm terribly sorry, I was lost in thought."

Unlike the hoards of debutantes that were scattered around the room, Annabelle was doing her best to avoid human contact — well, human contact with other young ladies. She felt that their eyes followed her, judging her, with every move she made. She knew it was irrational to feel that way; there was no way that any of those ladies knew whether she was Miss Araminta or Miss Annabelle Scrimgeour.

The few men that had danced with her had, however, asked her to specify. She could not hide the look of fear on her face when that question was asked, nor could she hide the look of embarrassment on her face as the facial expressions of the gentlemen shifted from warm and friendly to what she could only describe as judgmental. As such, she'd make a great effort to avoid not only the young ladies, but also the men as well — which left, as expected, almost no one to socialize with.

She had snaked her way towards the crowd with the hopes of snagging a drink off one of the trays. When she reached the gentleman, she quickly snatched it. She turned to wander back towards the scarcely populated area of the ballroom, only to almost collide with a young gentlemen with a frustrated expression plastered to his face. An apology left her lips before she could think of a response, and she watched as he continued staring off into space. She blinked.

He then seemed to realize that she was standing there and let out his own apology. "Oh, no worries," she said, shaking her head. "I almost collided with you, but it seems you didn't realize," she added with a shaky laugh. Oh Merlin, she hated people — not anyone in particular, but rather the act of engaging in conversation with them. "Are you alright, then?" she suddenly blurted. After a moment of pausing, she quietly added, "You looked very ... frustrated."

She looked like she wanted to be here almost as much as Nate which surprised him.  She seemed about the same age as his sister and clearly affluent if her clothing was any indicator.  With the Season (he couldn't believe The Season was something he was conscious of now) just starting surely she was on the hunt for a husband as much as any other debutante, yet here she was away from the crowd talking to someone very clearly too young to be a good prospect.

He shook his head.  "Its kind of you to ask but its nothing I care to ruin the evening with."  Which might not be necessarily true but it was the polite thing to say.  "Are you enjoying the festivities?" he asked, raising his glass slightly in gesture to hers before taking a sip.

Annabelle was momentarily relieved that he hadn't been rude to her as she'd expected. His words, however, went beyond the basic 'No, it's alright', and he began a conversation with her. Already anxious and flustered, she struggled to comprehend his sentence and answer him properly.

"I suppose I don't enjoy parties as much as I should," she admitted with pink cheeks. She would much rather secure a husband through other means, such as being introduced to him by a mutual friend and continuing their acquaintanceship elsewhere. That was a difficult feat to reach, however, seeing as her best friend, Miss Cattermole, had as few connections as she!
