'Swoop'. A barn owl with noticeably ruffled feathers landed on the edge of Suzuko's desk, a scrap of parchment in its beak. She gently removed it from the bird's mouth and glanced down at the rolled up parchment attached to its leg. She looked back at the note, it read:

"Please find attached documents which require they be returned by the end of the working day."

The owl thrust its leg forward and as soon as she had relieved the creature of its burden, it departed once more. She unraveled the documents and gave them an initial cursory glance. It would be best to get them filled in and returned as soon as possible, what she had been working on prior wasn't quite so urgent. Suzy inked up her quill and was about to start writing, when the word 'dragon' caught her eye. Closer inspection soon revealed to Suzy that she had the wrong forms, the ones in her hand appeared to be for the Dragon Research and Restraint Bureau. How odd. She flicked through them again to make sure she hadn't missed anything else, and another small scrap of parchment fell to her desk, probably having been stuck to the back of the forms. "Miss Rook". Well she was definitely not Miss Rook. Evidently there had been some sort of mix up, how annoying. It seemed she wouldn't be filling in and returning the documents so soon.

Suzy rose from her desk, let someone know where she was off to in case she was needed, and headed for the nearest elevator. It seemed logical to assume that the Dragon Research and Restraint Bureau would have her documents. If not, she'd drop theirs off anyway and go track down the appropriate ones for the Department of Magical Education.

Before long she was in an elevator and on her way. At least she had been until the elevator suddenly hurtled downwards at considerable and abnormal speed, stopping abruptly only a few seconds later but it was long enough. Suzy managed to grab hold of the railing with her free hand to stop herself from falling over but she very nearly ended up tumbling into the young woman who happened to be the only other person in the elevator with her at that moment. It seemed they'd be trapped together a little longer than a typical elevator ride too for the thing seemed to have stopped dead, closed, and the lighting had dimmed to a faint glow. "Merlin...!" Suzy felt jittery all over and failed to finish her exclamation.

It had been a hectic day for poor Molly. It was nearing lunchtime and she hadn't even spent any time at her desk where she was supposed to be. Whatever owls they were receiving today seemed to be rather confused for she too had been delivered the wrong documents! The ones she needed were also nowhere in sight and she was becoming worried, for they were quite important.

So, after delivering the papers to the Department of Magical Games and Sports, Molly had gone off in search of her own. But she'd really had no luck. Sighing, she had decided to return to her own desk, hoping that they had finally shown up. If they hadn't, she wasn't sure what she was going to do!

Fretting about them, she waited in the elevator, only offering a brief smile to the woman who got on whereas she normally would have held a conversation. She quietly waited as the elevator began its descent... and then it really dropped!

Molly gasped loudly, also clutching to the railing as the elevator hurtled downwards, stopping with enough force to knock her to her knees! "Ow!" she complained. Everything had stilled now and the elevator seemed considerably dark. It was also no longer moving. She bit back a curse.

"Are you alright?" Molly questioned of the woman with her as she stood up again, brushing off her skirts. Her knees smarted, but otherwise she kept her wits. Pulling out her wand, she flicked it at the doors of the elevator, but they didn't budge in the slightest. She frowned. "Do you think we're stuck?"

Besides startled, Suzy was otherwise okay. She didn't think her elevator companion was as likely to have avoided harm as she'd fallen over, and yet she was the one who asked after her well-being! "Yes, I'm fine thank you." She watched as the other witch attempted to magically open the doors to no effect. "I wonder if they might be charmed to prevent opening between floors when it's dangerous... Are you all right?" She suddenly realized that she was still clinging on to the railing for dear life and released it. That was hardly as useful now that they had stopped falling.

It was then that she realized she still had the documents in her hand and they were now somewhat creased where her hand had been gripping them. How she'd managed to not drop them, she didn't know. Suzy took out her wand and tried a spell of her own at the doors but they didn't budge. "I wouldn't like to say for certain that we're stuck, but it doesn't look good."

"My knees hurt a little," Molly admitted, still looking at the doors with a frustrated expression. "But I'll be fine." That the elevator doors were spelled to remain shut as a safety feature should something be wrong made sense, but after that drop, Molly really just wanted to be out!

If today hadn't already been hectic enough, now there was this. "Damned contraption," she muttered under her breath, before realizing that she was in someone else's company. "Oh, excuse me," she immediately added in apology for her cursing. But she was just simply so irritated!

"Well, should we wait?" she mused aloud while at the same time trying to budge the doors to at least see outside. They didn't so much as move. "Surely someone heard the racket and is trying to fix this thing?" That idea didn't really suit her, however, for she preferred action to anything else, which was likely evident in the way she tapped her foot on the floor!

Suzy was relieved she wasn't trapped in an elevator with someone in need of urgent medical attention for she knew a fair few healing spells but she was no trained healer and if it was urgent then they'd be in trouble. That scenario, thankfully, was avoided and hopefully the being locked in an elevator part would also resolve in a few minutes. One could hope anyway.

The curse mostly went over her head - she was unfamiliar with most English curse words but that one she did know of. She wasn't one for swearing and she didn't particularly like it, but she had gotten used to the occasional curse word being thrown around after a couple weeks working as a secretary. "Waiting may be the best thing to do, it's hard to know what might come of trying to magic ourselves out prematurely." Without knowing what sort of enchantments were in use on the elevator it was hard to know what was at stake. Surely someone would have noticed the missing elevator?

Suzy suddenly noticed the foot tapping and could immediately empathize, she too needed to be elsewhere getting things done. Perhaps any other day she mightn't have been in such a rush, then again she took her job so seriously that every task felt like it needed to be conducted with the utmost thoroughness and alacrity. "I only had one more floor to go," she lamented with undertones of annoyance. She looked to her papers again and checked to make sure she had all of them. Thankfully she did, not that it was much of a surprise, she hadn't thought she'd dropped anything.

"I did too," Molly lamented, leaning back against the wall and slowly sliding down it to sit on the floor. She stared at the doors sullenly, wishing that the elevator would begin moving already! As if the heavens read her mind, the contraption suddenly shuddered again, giving Molly a brief flicker of hope, but in the end it did nothing else.

She practically hit her head against the back wall in frustration. "Oh, really?" she complained with a groan. Never the most patient of people, Molly always had trouble sitting still. Somehow she remained seated, fidgeting with the hem of her dress, although if she had room she would certainly be pacing back and forth.

"I was just trying to find my papers," she whined softly after a few more seconds of staring at the door, hoping for movement. "Is that too much to ask?"

Suzy didn't particularly approve of sitting on floors where people walked, but now that her companion had done just that, she felt rather awkward remaining stood up. The elevator suddenly shook as though it were about to start moving again but it didn't. This development made her feel a touch queasy as she had instantly feared it would drop further. Reluctantly, she joined the young woman on the floor.

"I had someone else's turn up on the my desk earlier. I hope they have us out of this elevator before-" she glanced at the papers in her arms and squinted in the dimness, "Miss Rook has gone home for the day." Hopefully the young woman would also have some papers for her in return. Little did Suzy know that she was sat next to the very lady!

"Miss Rook!?" Molly exclaimed, unbelieving of her ears and jumping in surprise. "That's me! That's me!" She couldn't believe her luck that she would find the important documents that she needed here! For a moment she completely forgot that the two of them were stuck in the elevator as she looked over at the other woman in relief.

She started laughing then, shaking her head. "Of all the luck," she chuckled, unsure as to why she found this so amusing. Was she going mad from only five minutes stuck in the elevator? She certainly hoped not! "Well, at least you don't have to worry about one thing," she told the other girl, holding out her hand politely. "Molly Rook, nice to meet you, although it's a shame that it's under such abhorrent circumstances!"

Suzy looked to her elevator companion with eyebrows raised in surprise. For a brief moment she wondered if the other secretary then might have her papers so she could try to get them filled out by the time they were rescued. It really was, as the other young woman had just said, quite fortunate!

She looked down at the extended hand offered her and then gently took it in her own. Handshaking was not something she did very often. "Suzuko Layton, likewise it's nice to meet you too. What a coincidence! I don't suppose you happen to have my papers, do you? I was on my way to drop these off and I had hoped mine were with you..." Suzy took them from her arms and held them out for the other secretary to take.

Molly still couldn't quite believe the coincidence of being trapped in an elevator with the secretary who had her papers by accident, but she seemed strangely more cheerful now. "Oh, thank you!" she replied as she was handed her forms. A quick look told them they were indeed what she'd been looking for.

"I think I have yours too," she replied, nodding towards Suzuko. "I mean, I didn't look them over very well, but something was delivered to my desk. So unless the entire Ministry is all befuzzled, they're yours! Now if only we could get out of here..."

As if on cue, Molly could hear voices above them, likely at the point where the elevator meant to stop!

Suzy's heart sank to hear that her forms weren't in the elevator with them. Her impatience to escape the elevator intensified. Still, knowing where they probably were was reassuring and would hopefully save her some time. The other secretary's improved mood improved hers in turn, and then there came the sound of voices not too far off. Hopefully they'd be out very soon!

"I hope you do have mine, I don't know where to look next if not. What an awful mix up!" And then there was the elevator, was nothing running smoothly today? "Do you think that's the maintenance staff?"

"I am ninety-nine percent certain that they are on my desk," Molly replied in hopes of easing Suzuko's fears. She had panicked earlier when her own papers had not been delivered, so she had barely checked those that were on her desk, but she seemed to recall something of the sort, for Miss Layton's name sounded quite familiar.

Again voices sounded outside and Molly nodded. "It has to be!" she concluded, for who else would be outside of a broken elevator but the maintenance staff? As if to answer their questions, the elevator seemed to flicker back to life.

    ...before shuddering and dropping again.

Molly screamed, but thankfully the elevator did not drop as it had earlier. It came to a sudden stop, but momentarily the doors opened on the proper floor. "Oh thank Merlin!" Molly exclaimed, literally crawling out of the contraption and sitting down with a sigh. "I am never getting on one of those again!"

Suzy was most relieved to know where her documents were, or where they probably were at any rate. It would certainly save time visiting every department, especially if the elevators weren't going to work properly. Fortunately, on that matter, there seemed to be cause for optimism. The light was back and for a fraction of a second she thought it was actually going to move, but then it dropped again. She gave an almighty gasp of shock which she let out only seconds later when she realized that the doors were opening.

Suzy got to her feet staggered out. Her legs were a little wobbly and her heart was beating fast enough to make her feel a little dizzy but otherwise she was full of relief.
"I know the feeling!" She would inevitably use the elevators again, but it would definitely be a long while before she fully trusted them.

Molly was laughing now, the 'excitement' finally getting to her. "As soon as I can feel my legs again," she told Suzuko, "I'll take you to get your papers.

But first, she had to rest for a few seconds, even if they had been sitting in the elevator for at least half an hour. She couldn't help it, after two drops her nerves were fried. Thankfully, she was accustomed to dealing with dragons, so really she wasn't quite as shaken as she claimed to be.

Standing up, she gestured to Suzuko to follow her. "Come along, Miss Layton," she said with a smile. "Let's take care of what is hopefully our final problem of the day!"
